The Walking Dead transcended its status as a mere television series, transforming into a cultural juggernaut, captivating audiences far beyond those who typically enjoy horror and gruesome content. Its writing, consistently outstanding across many seasons, breathed life into truly unforgettable characters, both heroes and villains. A steady stream of new antagonists was introduced, with Negan emerging as one of the series’ most iconic adversaries.
The head of a survival band called the Saviors, Negan, brought hardship to anyone not in his group, including Rick and his companions. Yet, despite his harsh actions, viewers found themselves drawn to him due to his clever and highly memorable dialogue.
9. “You Got No Guts.”
Negan Kills Another Core Member with Dramatic Flair
- Featured in: Season 7, Episode 8: Hearts Still Beating
Whenever Negan performs an action, he typically adds a touch of style or has a witty remark prepared, even during serious situations like the death of Spencer. In the visit of the Saviors to Alexandria, Spencer was trying to win Negan’s favor, eventually revealing his motive for being overly friendly with the man who could crush their skulls at any moment: he sought Rick’s leadership position.
It’s no shock that Negan dislikes being tricked, and he feels he shouldn’t meet his end by Lucille. Instead, he stabs Spencer with a knife, jokingly stating he doesn’t have courage until it spills from the wound. In an ironic twist, he declares he does possess courage after all. This darkly humorous moment of violent death is very much in character for Negan, and it’s one of the reasons many fans found him captivating.
enough of him.
8. “And I Fed Him Spaghetti.”
Negan Had Every Reason to Kill Carl, But Instead Spared Him
- Featured in: Season 7, Episode 8: Hearts Still Beating
My child secretly got into one of my vehicles and started firing at my people, but I managed to bring him back here safely, and then I even fed him spaghetti!
In Season 7, Negan settled into Alexandria quite comfortably, providing fans with some of his most memorable quotes, like in the episode titled “Hearts Still Beating.” However, not everyone is thrilled about his presence and rule, especially Carl, who feels compelled to act independently. He does this by concealing himself in one of Negan’s trucks and using a machine gun to attack some of his men. This action is undeniably risky, considering that Negan has shown no mercy when wielding Lucille, his bat.
Instead of retaliating violently as one might anticipate, he surprisingly spares his life and invites him home to share a meal. This action aligns with Negan’s character, as he manages to project an imposing presence even during a peaceful family gathering.
7. “I Hope You Got Your Sh****ing Pants On.”
Negan Reveals His Presence to Gabriel in a Hilarious Manner
- Featured in: Season 8, Episode 1: Mercy
You’re on the verge of feeling quite surprised or afraid, potentially leading to an involuntary reaction that might make you feel as though you need to change your trousers.
Nearly every time Negan speaks, he comes up with a witty remark that fans will recall and quote for years to come. Even when doing something as ordinary as greeting someone else, he does it in his unique style, just like in the season 8 premiere, where he and Gabriel found themselves in the same shelter surrounded by walkers, using his characteristic approach.
It’s not surprising that Negan, appearing from the dark, gave Gabriel a frightening impression. After all, it’s unsettling to find the Savior leader in the very cabin Gabriel had sought asylum in. Now, fans are left guessing about Gabriel’s future, as while he may be momentarily safe from walkers, he now faces someone who could pose an even greater danger.
6. “I Just Slipped My Di** Down Your Throat, and You Thanked Me For It.”
Negan Never Wastes an Opportunity to Neg Rick
- Featured in: Season 7, Episode 4: Service
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel for old Rick. Despite managing to survive the run-in with the Saviors – unlike some others in our group – it seemed like Negan took pleasure in making his life a living hell from day one. It was clear that Negan intended to keep Rick around just so he could continue to mess with him, embarrass him in front of us all who trusted Rick to lead us out of survival and into a better life, and to torment him relentlessly. But then along came Negan, flipping our world on its head.
Negan and his Saviors have become too cozy in Alexandria, with Rick even keeping hold of Lucille, Negan’s bat he rarely lets go, for him. He stubbornly refuses to depart until Rick extends a thank you, which Rick does so unwillingly. In exchange for his compliance, Negan seizes the moment to boast, mocking Rick for his submission before departing. This remark is both startling and amusing, a line that fans still quote despite the fact that the viewers can’t help but empathize with Rick, feeling a tinge of sorrow for him and apprehensive about the safety of the survivors under this strict new rule.
5. “Starving? You?”
Negan Straddles the Line Between Megalomaniac and High School Bully with His Mean Teasing
- Featured in: Season 7, Episode 7: Sing Me a Song
“Starving? You? By ‘practically’, you mean ‘not really’….Really?”
In contrast to his typically intimidating screen persona, Negan’s brief encounter with Olivia in season 7 episode 7 strips him down to the level of a schoolyard bully. This is because he lacks a genuine reason to intimidate her. Despite this, he can’t resist delivering some cutting remarks that, while amusing given their context and coming from Negan, are undeniably mean-spirited.
Olivia suggests that Rick went out searching for additional resources because they’re running low at Alexandria, and people are having to make do with less food. When she says this, Negan reacts with a mocking expression, casting a sidelong glance at her physique as he adds an insult. Viewers can’t help but feel sympathy for Olivia, but they also can’t suppress their laughter, especially at Negan’s attempts to console her and the sharp slap she delivers in retaliation.
4. “Well, Pardon Me, Young Man….Did You Just Threaten Me?”
The Beginning of Negan’s Odd Respect for Carl
- Featured in: Season 7, Episode 4: Service
“Well, pardon me young man, excuse the sh** out of my goddamn French but did you just threaten me?”
In Season 7, Negan was particularly sharp with his demands, as he had absolute control over the survivors, making them gather resources for him and the Saviors, sometimes leaving their own group struggling with food shortages. Despite their displeasure, the group generally complied in order to stay alive and find a way to counteract this situation. However, Carl wasn’t willing to submit passively.
In the process of gathering resources, he brandishes a firearm, warning Negan he’ll use it unless some supplies are returned. This action from Carl, a mere boy, left Negan astonished yet respectful, as he couldn’t help but acknowledge his courage. Eventually, Negan develops admiration for Carl, and this incident might have marked the beginning of that transformation.
3. “You’re Not Saving the World, Rick. You’re Just Getting it Ready for Me.”
A Chilling Line Alluding to a Bleak Future for Rick and the Survivors
- Featured in: Season 9, Episode 2: The Bridge
In the second episode of season 9, I found myself witnessing a significant turn of events. The tension between Alexandria and the Saviors peaked in the season 8 finale, leading viewers to believe that Negan had met his end when his neck encountered the sharp edge of Rick’s sword. However, as the episode drew to a close, it was revealed that Negan was not entirely vanquished; he was the one being addressed by Rick inside the cell. He shared updates on the progress of the communities, seemingly to underscore how he and his men had suffered losses, while Rick and his group seemed to be prospering.
Despite being imprisoned, Negan persists in refusing to concede defeat. Intriguingly, he suggests that Rick is merely setting the stage for Negan’s return, implying that he believes he will once again rule supreme. The fact that Negan survived at all was unexpected, but this statement certainly implies that his confinement won’t last long and he plans on reclaiming what he considers to be his domain.
2. “Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe…”
Negan Makes a Game Out of Choosing His Victims
- Featured in: Season 6, Episode 16: Last Day on Earth
Here it is: At long last, Negan, the head of the Saviors, was introduced in a fitting manner. He halted the RV carrying Maggie, who was both sick and pregnant, from reaching safety. Eventually, they were all gathered in an open space and compelled to kneel down to meet their new captor, Negan. As for some of them, it was their last day on earth as he announced that those who survived would be in for a world of misery.
Negan appeared to be indecisive about who he wanted to meet, and instead turned the encounter into a game. He used the rhyme “eeny, meeny, miny, moe” as a guide, walking among the group while reciting it until he reached his chosen one. Striking someone’s head is already horrific, but treating the selection of his target like a simple playground game makes it even more disturbing. This unpredictable choice left fans on edge, with the victim remaining unknown until the start of season 7, creating one of the most shocking cliffhangers in television history.
1. “I Was a Coward. I Couldn’t Face the Pain of Losing You, So I Ran Away.”
This Episode Revealed Hidden Depths to Negan’s Character
- Featured in: Season 10, Episode 22: Here’s Negan
In a different phrasing, here’s how the text could read: “I acted fearfully in the face of our parting, as the thought of losing you was too painful for me to bear. To avoid this pain and the accompanying embarrassment, I chose to distance myself emotionally. The issue now is that… the shame from my actions lingers.
This episode of “The Walking Dead,” titled “Here’s Negan,” could be one of the most compelling, as it sheds light on Negan’s past, a character widely regarded as the series’ most formidable antagonist. Prior to the apocalypse, we discover that Negan was far from an ideal husband to Lucille, his bat, spending excessive hours gaming after losing employment, splurging on luxury items like pricey leather coats, and even straying in his marital vows.
After Lucille was diagnosed with cancer, the world seemed to be collapsing for Negan. However, this hardship transformed him into a caring and devoted spouse, determined to help Lucille beat cancer. Sadly, she passed away, leaving Negan heartbroken. Upon his return, he found her as a walker. The bat he named after her was in his arms as he mourned the loss, expressing the deep regret he felt. Despite his jovial demeanor most of the time, this scene and the entire episode carried an incredibly powerful emotional impact.
