Summary
- Astro Royale manga by Ken Wakui ended after just six volumes.
- The story follows Hibaru Yotsurugi in a superpowered Yakuza family power struggle.
- Despite a strong start, Astro Royale was constantly ranked low and failed to retain readership.
In this year’s 21st issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, Ken Wakui, the writer behind Tokyo Revengers, concluded his manga titled Astro Royale, which debuted on April 15, 2024, and ran for a little over one year, wrapping up after six volumes.
To date, the manga has been compiled into four books, and the fifth is scheduled for release on shelves on May 2nd. The sixth and concluding volume, which will be published on July 4th, will also feature an extra 19 pages following the conclusion of the main narrative.
What Was Astro Royale?
Superpowered Yakuza

Astro Royale revolves around Hibaru Yotsurugi, the sole biological heir of the Yotsurugi yakuza family, as he becomes embroiled in a power tussle with his adopted siblings, vying for the position of the gang’s future leader. However, events take an unexpected turn one evening when a meteorite slams into Tokyo, and shortly afterward, individuals start displaying extraordinary powers known as Astros. This transformation transforms what was initially expected to be a typical gang conflict into a superpowered struggle.
Amidst the turmoil, the family is splitting apart, and Hibaru finds himself needing to employ his recently acquired abilities to safeguard those dearest to him against his siblings who are competing for dominance. As I’ve shared before, “Astro Royale” was serialized in Shōnen Jump from April 2024 through April 2025. Both Viz Media and Manga Plus provided simultaneous English publications of the series. The English translation was handled by Andria McKnight, with Effie Colton responsible for the lettering.
Based on data from Jajanken, Astro Royale averaged at the 13th spot in rankings, surprisingly low given its promising debut as the first chapter ranked first in Shōnen Jump rankings. However, it failed to maintain this initial success and was often placed towards the end of the rankings, suggesting that readers lost interest in the series. Many manga enthusiasts on Reddit who tried Astro Royale were not overly impressed with it. It seems likely that the author, Wakui, is already planning a new manga, but we’ll know for sure soon enough.
Astro Royale is available to read on VIZ Media’s website.
