Among all the animes I’ve watched, One Piece has undeniably captured my heart, and it’s mainly because of its unforgettable characters that make this epic voyage so special. Two of these characters that have left a lasting impression on me are the legendary swordsman Zoro from the Straw Hat Pirates, and the charming chef with the golden heart, Sanji. Their dynamic truly takes the series to new heights.
If someone told me that the fanbase for characters like Zoro and Sanji from the One Piece series is larger than the overall fanbase of the show itself, I’d find it hard to disbelieve. After all, it seems like there’s an endless debate among fans about their bounties and power levels!
I’ve compiled a list of my top 7 favorite Zoro and Sanji moments from One Piece, which I believe outshine other scenes in the series and solidify these formidable characters as an exceptional duo within the anime/manga genre.
I hope this revised sentence retains the original meaning while being more natural and easier to read!
7.
The Nicknames Gag
Comedians First, Pirates After.
One memorable aspect of the series that stands out is the frequent banter between Zoro and Sanji, where they trade nicknames. This interaction becomes particularly endearing following the intense or dramatic parts of the story.
In essence, these aren’t just isolated instances of humor, but a series of amusing exchanges that transpire whenever these two characters engage in conflict. Sanji often refers to Zoro as “mosshead”, “idiot”, or “stupid swordsman”, while Zoro counters by calling Sanji “idiot cook”, “stupid cook”, or “Mr. Nosebleed”.
In the prolonged course of the One Piece series, it’s become quite rare for Zoro and Sanji to refer to each other using their nicknames instead of their actual given names.

Post-Time Skip Pacifista Fight
A Showcase of Strength.

As a diehard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the memory of how, pre-timeskip, a lone Pacifista brought down my beloved Straw Hat Crew in an instant. Yet, post-timeskip, it was Zoro and Sanji who, with their powerful synergy, managed to take down a Pacifista with just one combined attack. This electrifying moment is a testament to the grueling training these two characters endured, showcasing their growth and unyielding determination.
In order to safeguard their comrades and realize their captain’s ambition of ruling as the Pirate King, Zoro and Sanji honed their skills to such an extent that they made a Pacifista merely a trivial opponent for them.
In the end, this situation culminates in yet another disagreement between the two personalities, leading them to squabble about who delivered the final blow to the Pacifista. This results in another humorous exchange taking place within a somewhat tense atmosphere.
After some part of the narrative unfolds, you become accustomed to these kinds of squabbles, where they seem to constantly try to outdo each other. When Zoro and Sanji’s ego-clashes occur, I can’t help but anticipate the delight it brings to the audience’s faces.
5.
The Little Garden Competition
Let The Hunt Begin.

In the Little Garden saga, we witness one of the first instances where Zoro and Sanji’s rivalry unfolds, a rivalry that endures throughout the storyline. During this period, their competitive spirits surface as they engage in a mini-hunting contest to replenish the team’s depleting food stocks.
On Little Garden island, they opt for a friendly contest where they chase after massive game. The one who catches the largest becomes the victor, yet what truly matters is the camaraderie and the chance for each participant to boast about their success among their peers.
As a devoted fan, I observed in episode 70 of the anime, they both pursued prey roughly of the same scale, yet Zoro and Sanji consistently found themselves at odds over the size of their quarry. This ongoing disagreement serves as a testament to the fact that these two characters will maintain their contrasting personalities throughout the series, particularly in terms of their strength and determination.
4.
The Davy Back Fight
Luffy’s Gambling Addiction.

An age-old story, similar to the vastness of the oceans, is one where pirate gangs engage in a Davy Back Fight, gambling their fellow pirates, and unfortunately, the Straw Hat Pirates forfeit Chopper in the opening round.
In the next round, it was Zoro and Sanji’s turn to reclaim Chopper, facing off against the Groggy Monsters in a contest known as the Groggy Ring. Initially, they found themselves at a disadvantage due to their constant squabbling, which distracted them from concentrating on the fight.
Once they understood the necessity of setting aside their disagreements for the sake of their team, it didn’t take long for Zoro and Sanji to subdue the Groggy Monsters. This incident served as a powerful reminder that when the situation calls for it, Sanji and Zoro will unite not just for personal aspirations, but for something they treasure even more: the safety of their crew.
3.
Sanji And Zoro’s Sacrifice
Nothing Happened.

At the conclusion of the Thriller Bark saga, we witness that both Zoro and Sanji are prepared to forfeit their personal aspirations in support of Luffy’s dreams. When Luffy is incapacitated, Kuma launches an attack on the Straw Hat Pirates. It falls upon Zoro and Sanji to take action and address this critical situation.
Zoro proposes to Kuma that he might relinquish his ambition, provided Luffy remains unharmed. Upon hearing this, Sanji becomes determined and volunteered himself, offering to take the place of Zoro instead.
However, prior to any exchange taking place, Zoro first subdues Sanji and takes his place as the one released. As a result, Kuma forms a ball of Luffy’s agony, which Zoro must bear if he wishes Luffy to live, and that is exactly what unfolds.
Kuma departs once Zoro completes their agreement, and later on, Sanji reappears at Zoro’s spot after coming to. When inquired about the matter, Zoro vaguely reassures them by saying ‘Nothing of Consequence Occurred’, evidently wishing to keep his gesture a secret from the rest of the crew.
Sanji honors his requests and maintains the entire exchange confidential from the rest of the team, implying a strong, amicable connection between them, even though they have a friendship-enemy relationship.
2.
The Bounty Interactions
Price Means Power.

In the universe of One Piece, nearly all pirates have a designated bounty value set by the Marines, represented in the form of ‘berries’. The greater the quantity of berries, the more intimidating the pirate is perceived to be in terms of physical strength.
From the start, Luffy consistently holds the highest bounty among the Straw Hat Crew, as expected due to his role as captain. However, what makes this intriguing are the positions following him – the second and third spots – that author Oda cleverly employs for comedic banter between Zoro and Sanji.
The rewards on their heads tend to change whenever a story arc concludes, and they eagerly anticipate which one will have the highest value next. They’re constantly vying for the greater number since it clearly signifies their power level.
Regardless, it leads to some humorous scenes within the narrative. For example, following the Wano arc, Sanji’s bounty fell to fourth place among the Straw Hat Pirates, and ever since then, Zoro has been teasing him for being the fourth member of the crew.
1.
Zoro And Sanji Vs King And Queen
The Wings of The Pirate King.

Over and over, it’s made clear that Zoro and Sanji serve as Luffy’s trusty sidekicks, and they’re typically tasked with battling the strongest subordinates of the primary antagonist in nearly every storyline.
There is no superior illustration than when Zoro and Sanji launched their full assault on King and Queen, who are undoubtedly the strongest fighters in Kaido’s Beast Pirates Crew. This moment is widely acclaimed as the most impressive between these two renowned characters from the show.
In the despairing Live Floor of Onigashima, with King and Queen unleashing devastation everywhere, it’s Zoro and Sanji who step up to turn things around. Sanji employs his Diable Jambe, while Zoro wields his Three Sword Style. Their combined attack incapacitates Kaido’s strongest minions, at least until they face them individually in future battles.
Marco, too, recognizes plainly that when Luffy is otherwise engaged or unavailable, it’s Zoro and Sanji who will take charge and safeguard the team, shining brightly as the leading figures in any given situation.
