Summary
- Bethesda supports Skyblivion team with game keys, contradicting other companies’ cease-and-desist actions.
- Skyblivion team receives gifts from Bethesda showing positive attitude towards unofficial projects.
- Oblivion Remastered‘s success on Steam points to a bright future for both official and fan-led remakes.
The creators of ‘Skyblivion’, an unofficial reimagining of ‘Oblivion’ using the ‘Skyrim’ engine, have disclosed that they received gifts from Bethesda to mark the release of ‘Oblivion Remastered’, the stealth-launched official remake. This gesture suggests that Bethesda continues to uphold a generally supportive stance towards modders, even extending to the team responsible for the unofficial ‘Oblivion’ remake, ‘Skyblivion’.
To clarify for those who might be uncertain, Bethesda officially put an end to the prolonged speculation about a Oblivion remake or upgrade on April 22 by publicly unveiling and launching the game. In contrast, Skyblivion, however, is a fan-driven project that has been under development in some form since 2012.
In 2025, when Skyblivion is due to be released – the same year as the official Oblivion Remastered – one might think that Bethesda would be less enthusiastic about the fan project. However, quite the opposite seems to be true, as an official post from the Skyblivion team announced they had received free game keys for Oblivion Remastered from Bethesda themselves. The Skyblivion team expressed their gratitude and appreciation for Bethesda’s supportive stance towards their project and the gift marking the launch of Oblivion Remastered.
Not Every Game Developer Strikes Out With Cease and Desists
Bethesda has been welcoming towards modifications for quite some time, and as a result, an increasing number of game creators are adopting this approach. Modifications can keep a game’s community alive even when the official developers have stopped working on it. However, while some companies like Take-Two Interactive and Nintendo have taken legal action against those who create similar modifications for their properties, Bethesda appears to be more open towards mods.
Speaking of which, it’s worth noting that Skyblivion has surpassed expectations. Initially, the goal was to transfer the game onto a modern engine, but the team took things a step further by completely replacing assets and rebuilding significant parts of the game, such as the terrain. Before making an official announcement, the Skyblivion team acknowledged the rumored Oblivion Remastered and its potential release, expressing enthusiasm about the game reaching more players, particularly console users. As they themselves said, 2025 promises to be a fantastic year for fans of Oblivion.
