Summary
- A fan artist created a Water-type Pikachu, with a tail seemingly made of bubbles and gill-like sacs.
- The Water-type creature was named Pikablu after a rumored variant from the early days of the franchise.
- According to the artist, Pikablu is an ancient relative of Pikachu that lost out to its land-dwelling cousins.
One enthusiastic Pokémon aficionado has given a watery twist to the traditional Pikachu aesthetic, envisioning how an Electric-type could transform into a Water-type character. Although the mythical “Pikablu” from the early days of the Pokémon franchise never materialized, this recent fan art demonstrates the possibility of a new Water-type variant of Pikachu.
In the role of the emblem for the Pokemon series, Pikachu is widely recognized by many gamers, even those who don’t engage with the games themselves. Due to its widespread popularity, the Electric-type Pokemon often appears in fan artwork, where artists envision alternate versions of the character with different types. These reinterpretations of the creature frequently offer a fresh twist on the traditional design, piquing the curiosity of those who wonder what these designs might look like in the official games. Although it’s unlikely that The Pokemon Company will take inspiration from fan art, this hasn’t prevented artists from sharing more imaginative designs.
More recently, a fan artist named Matratzfratz on Reddit crafted their unique take on an aquatic Pikachu, which they called Pikablu. This new design features a predominantly blue character with a likeness similar to the original Electric-type Pokemon, but there are distinct variations. For instance, instead of the traditional lightning bolt tail, this version sports a bubble-like one. Moreover, the creature boasts bulbous sacs on its face that appear like gills.
Pokemon Fan’s Water-Type Pikachu Variant
In a Reddit post, Matratzfratz explained a brief overview of a new design, which introduced an ancient character named Pikablu. This character is said to be a precursor to Pikachu, inhabiting the world before Pokemon populated land. Unfortunately, as other land-dwelling Pokemon with type advantages emerged, Pikablu was outcompeted.
The idea presented by Pikablu isn’t a fresh one from Matratzfratz on Reddit; this artist often shares innovative reinterpretations of traditional Pokémon on the platform. A recent example is the new chest form for Crustle, which transforms the Pokémon into a treasure-themed character. Moreover, they have created numerous custom versions for fans to explore on their Reddit page, including a weeping Diglett version, an Eeveelution with a Steel type, and much more.
Enthusiasts are still crafting artwork inspired by beloved pocket monsters, but there’s a buzz building around the upcoming game, “Pokemon Legends: Z-A.” This highly anticipated title is set to reintroduce Mega evolutions, sparking creativity among gamers who are now designing their unique interpretations of these supercharged Pokemon. With the Gen 9 game launch yet to come, we’ll have to see what other Mega evolution concepts emerge from the creative minds of Pokemon enthusiasts.
