You Won’t Believe What The Last of Us’ Rattlers Can Teach Us About Survival

The games “The Last of Us Part 1″ and “The Last of Us Part 2” demonstrate that even during a post-apocalyptic world like Outbreak Day, Joel maintained a flair for style, avoiding the common attire of sweatpants and hoodies. Before the events of “The Last of Us Part 1”, Joel was seen sporting a green plaid button-down in Boston’s quarantine zone, and later exchanged it for a pink plaid shirt in Jackson, Wyoming. As the weather grew colder, he added a brown jacket over a denim shirt to his wardrobe.

As Joel in The Last of Us Part 2, I’ve got a knack for keeping my style sharp, even at 56. It seems this isn’t just my thing though; almost every character sport a casual yet stylish look with henleys and cargo pants as their go-to attire. Strangely enough, considering the hostile environment filled with military forces and heavily armed factions, it’s puzzling why characters aren’t more heavily equipped. Thankfully, the Rattlers offer an intriguing solution to this conundrum, one that could have been right under Naughty Dog’s nose all along.

The Last of Us’ Wardrobe is More Style Than Substance

In The Last of Us, it’s not really significant that Joel and Ellie are seen in streetwear during combat. Given their harrowing experiences with hostile survivors and the many times they’ve barely escaped death, adding a bit of protective gear wouldn’t seem out of place or inconvenient for survival purposes.

Despite Abby, who serves in the Washington Liberation Front faction of The Last of Us Part 2 as a skilled soldier, consistently wearing a bomber jacket and cargo pants instead of opting for body armor, it’s worth noting that the main characters in The Last of Us series endure severe injuries and beatings that realistically should have been fatal or disabling. For instance, Ellie’s ability to keep Joel alive after he’s impaled on rebar is reminiscent of a miraculous Christmas event, and Ellie’s quick recovery from being injured by a tree spike, without any impact on gameplay, appears unrealistic in the context of the game’s gritty realism.

In less traditional gameplay scenarios, players are frequently under fire, and when the main character sustains an injury, simply wrapping a bandage around their arm serves as a quick fix – though this isn’t biologically accurate, the animation of the character treating their wound enhances the immersive experience. In the game The Last of Us Part 2, damage inflicted by time is introduced through arrows fired by Seraphites; if a player gets hit, they’ll continue to take damage until they manually remove the arrow from their character.

The Last of Us Part 2’s Rattlers Make a Notable Fashion Statement

In The Last of Us, not many enemies are significantly affected by their attire, but an armored clicker is tougher to eliminate with body shots. The WLF group wears tactical gear more often than Joel and his Carhartt, but it’s the Rattlers in The Last of Us Part 2 whose armor can be quite a hassle. The Rattler faction includes an enemy type who wears a helmet, as does the Rattler Captain boss in No Return’s roguelike mode. This helmeted Rattler captain can cause trouble in any confrontation because players cannot easily headshot him like they could with most other types of enemies.

In a tight spot, bricks, bottles, and stun bombs can be useful against Rattler enemies in games, since players can temporarily disable them, capture them, and eliminate them more effortlessly. However, a potential future installment of “The Last of Us” could benefit from the enemy’s abundant armor and headgear by enabling the player to don similar protective gear as well.

Improving gunfights in this game would significantly benefit if players had the option to wear riot gear or bulletproof vests, which could increase their resistance to bullets but also have varying degrees of durability. This concept is similar to how melee weapons in The Last of Us already have durability indicators, and extending this feature to equipment could bring a thrilling upgrade for the series, enhancing shootouts and strategic gear choices.
