GameStop Website Melts Due To Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Order Kick Off

Summary

  • GameStop, along with Walmart, Target, and Best Buy online portals, faced website outages due to high demand.
  • Pre-orders for the Switch 2 game-key cards will allow lending and reselling, but stocks are scarce globally.
  • Limited Switch 2 units at launch, high pricing, and high demand are anticipated challenges for interested buyers.

For those who may not be aware, the pre-sale for the new Nintendo Switch 2 starts today! However, if you’re considering placing a pre-order, be prepared for a tough challenge as many online retailers are experiencing technical difficulties due to high demand.

As of now, at the time this information was published, GameStop – America’s biggest video game retailer – is still dealing with an ongoing issue that caused their website to go down.

Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders Kick Off Today And The Expected Happens

Today, I’ve been unable to consistently access the GameStop website, and when it does load, it often redirects to a 404 page after clicking on an item. This isn’t unique to GameStop, as websites for Walmart, Target, and Best Buy have also experienced issues. The situation seems to have improved slightly, but expect occasional errors throughout the day due to high demand from eager Nintendo Switch 2 buyers.

With so many people vying for a console, it seems unlikely I’ll manage to get one when it first releases. Additionally, there’s word we’ve previously mentioned that GameStop’s initial supply of Switch 2 consoles at launch is significantly lower than anticipated, which isn’t great for those eager to play the newest Nintendo game in June.

In both the United States and Japan, where Nintendo originates, stocks (of the Nintendo Switch) are hard to come by. It’s reported that the video game company doesn’t have sufficient units to meet demand at launch, a situation that’s not surprising given the widespread popularity of the Nintendo Switch in Japan.

It appears that a steep cost for both the Switch 2 console and its exclusive games isn’t preventing players from purchasing it.

If you’re willing to hold off, the initial Nintendo Switch has some remaining potential, and even the CEO of Nintendo of America suggests it for those who can’t afford the Switch 2. You can even play certain Switch 2 game cartridges on the original Switch, but keep in mind that the list won’t be extensive.

It’s likely that, when GameStop and other retailer sites become operational again, most of the pre-orders will already be claimed. Here’s to hoping that Nintendo is able to fulfill demand sometime this year as the scarcity could worsen during the holiday season.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launches worldwide on June 5, 2025.
