Hyper Light Breaker Trailer Reveals New ‘Maw’ Crown Boss [EXCLUSIVE]

In January of 2025, Hyper Light Breaker was unveiled as the highly anticipated sequel to Hyper Light Drifter. Since then, this multiplayer roguelite game has been consistently updated, many times in response to feedback from Heart Machine’s dedicated fanbase. While previous updates have introduced some nice tweaks, the most significant and far-reaching changes are expected with the upcoming update titled ‘Buried Below,’ scheduled for release on April 29. This update will overhaul the roguelite gameplay structure, offer a new tutorial to facilitate smoother learning, and introduce a new character to play as well as a Crown boss to challenge.

In a special preview given to Game Rant, Heart Machine unveils the formidable new adversary, Maw, in Hyper Light Breaker. Without a doubt, Maw represents the toughest obstacle that players have encountered thus far. Equipped with novel weapons, characters, and refined mechanics, Maw offers an excellent opportunity for players to test out their latest gaming tools.

Hyper Light Breaker’s Maw Is Its Biggest Boss Yet

With a dramatic flight into the arena, Maw swoops down powerfully, aiming to crush any Breaker’s hopes of claiming another Crown. Maw demonstrates both close-combat and ranged abilities, making it risky for Breakers to find safe havens during the battle. Slamming with his massive claws, unleashing a fiery breath attack resembling a beam, and showering down projectiles are some of the challenges players will face when confronting this colossal adversary. According to Game Rant’s interview with Lead Producer Michael Clark, Maw is a new boss character.

Maw stands out among our other Crowns because she appears to be bigger than the entire battlefield where Dro’s fight occurs. Unlike our other Crowns who loom over the player, Maw doesn’t merely move within the arena; instead, she seems to tower above it and extends into the arena to attack the player.

In contrast to the formidable opponents represented by all Crowns in Hyper Light Breaker, Maw stands out as significantly larger. Clark noted that she’s even bigger than the arena where Dro resides, introducing fresh hurdles for players. Instead of pursuing a nimble boss like Dro, players will be battling an adversary that towers over and commands the entire battlefield at all times. This shift from the initial Crowns in Hyper Light Drifter signifies Heart Machine’s wealth of content as they progress through Early Access, demonstrating their commitment to delivering new experiences.
