In the Borderlands series, the absence of diverse adversaries hasn’t been a significant issue due to each sequel introducing fresh enemy types. However, as the Borderlands universe expands with unique environments, the demand for novel opponents naturally increases. Given that Borderlands 4 is planned to feature expansive, interconnected settings on Kairos, it would be fitting for the game to also introduce diverse and innovative enemies. One possible source of inspiration for these new enemies could come from the planet Eden-6 seen in Borderlands 3.
In the Floodmoor Basin area of Eden-6 within Borderlands 3, players may come across colossal alien dinosaurs occasionally. These encounters are exciting if you engage them using vehicles like the Cyclone, Outrunner, and Technical. Although they only drop common loot, these enormous dinos make quite an impression. It’s a pity that such battles with massive foes don’t happen more frequently. With Kairos in Borderlands 4 being one of the franchise’s largest planets, this seems like a great chance to emphasize giant enemies similar to Eden-6’s dinosaurs. Whether these giants return or new enemy types are introduced, this could be an excellent method to enrich the game world with engaging encounters that prioritize quality over quantity.
More Enemies Like Eden-6’s Giant Dinosaurs Could Give Borderlands 4’s Vehicles a Chance to Shine
In addition to providing a rich and immersive game environment, large adversaries could also offer opportunities for showcasing the combat-ready capabilities of vehicles in Borderlands 4. As we’ve seen throughout the Borderlands series, a common challenge is that vehicles become less effective as the game’s difficulty increases. This issue escalates to the point where enemies can quickly destroy the player’s vehicle during combat, making it impractical to rely on vehicles in these situations.
Apart from new automobiles, the playable characters in Borderlands 4 will be equipped with novel mobility skills, such as the ability to perform double jumps and use a grapple hook.
It’s my hope that Borderlands 4 will manage to free itself from its current limitations and fully exploit vehicles as an engaging element for combat, rather than merely a tool for movement. Instead of sporadic instances in quests that don’t recur, such as the Carnivora boss battle in Borderlands 3 or shootouts with other cars, we should see more frequent encounters with large enemies involving vehicles throughout the series. The planet Kairos in Borderlands 4 might be the ideal setting to introduce this change.
