From the initial episode of Netflix’s “You”, viewers found themselves pondering whether serial killer Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) might eventually be apprehended. In the second-to-last episode of the last season, it appears that more individuals are aware of his wrongdoings than ever before, hinting that his days may soon come to an end permanently. By this juncture, most major queries have been addressed, such as which previous characters might reappear and if Joe would actually cease killing, a promise he has made numerous times prior.
As the final episode approaches, ‘You’ season 5 presents an exhilarating narrative revolving around a man’s purported pursuit of genuine love, all while subtly revealing his inherent villainy through each action he takes. Will Joe meet his fate? What about his latest romantic interest, Bronte (Madeline Brewer), his wife Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), and Kate’s sister Maddie Lockwood (Anna Camp)? Many questions are resolved in ‘You’ season 5, episode 9.
What Happens In You Season 5 Episode 9?

In the fifth season of “You,” during episode 9 titled “Trial of the Furies,” we find Joe and Louise sharing a moment together where Joe experiences deep affection. His desire for freedom and adventure with Louise leads him to devise a sinister plan. He plants Raegan’s teeth in Harrison’s bag, setting him up for her murder, and also implicates Maddie in the crime by having her arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Interestingly, while Kate had initially hired a hitman to eliminate Joe, she decided against it as she hoped he would admit to planting the teeth. Although not all predictions for “You” season 5 turned out accurate, it became clear that Joe’s killing spree was far from over.
After Joe and Louise stroll through a park sipping coffee, giving off a vibe reminiscent of a romantic comedy scene, Joe discovers that Kate emptied his bank account. Besides evicting them from Mooney’s and the apartment above it, Kate has taken care of other details such as resigning her position, making Teddy Lockwood (Griffin Matthews) the new CEO.
In the fifth season of You, viewers might anticipate that Joe will harm Louise, but they are in for some major twists. Instead of killing Louise, Joe plans to kill Kate, yet she outsmarts him by sending a stand-in who resembles her. The plot then takes an unexpected turn as Joe finds himself trapped in a cage, where both Kate and Nadia Farran (Amy Leigh-Hickman) hold him captive. Kate proposes that if Joe confesses to his crimes, she’ll send him to an island; otherwise, she threatens to kill him. This scene is particularly noteworthy because although Kate believes she’s more compassionate than Joe, it becomes clear that she shares some of the same dark instincts as him.
While Kate and Louise engage in a deep conversation within their apartment, Louise struggling to accept that Joe is truly malicious, Nadia confronts Joe about his destructive actions, expressing her disappointment over shattered dreams such as being a published author. Trying to persuade Nadia to let him move on, Joe appeals to her by saying:
– “Could you please give me a chance to walk away?” (Informal)
– “Is it possible for you to forgive and let me go this time?” (Polite)
– “Can we find a way for me to make amends and start over?” (Diplomatic)
“Killing someone in this cage haunts you.”
Later on in You season 5, it’s revealed that Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle) reappears, leaving fans wondering about potential character returns. Marienne’s history is particularly tragic, as Joe believed she was deceased but tries to convince her he has changed. This scene is skillfully written since it recalls how at the end of You season 4, Joe had imprisoned Marienne in a cage and intentionally caused her distress. Marienne tells him, “You’re not a savior,” emphasizing that she recognizes his true nature. Marienne then seeks out Louise with the aim of making her realize the truth. Much like Joe’s other love interests, Marienne understands that they are capable of seeing through him and not being swayed by his charm.
How Does You Season 5 Episode 9 End?

In the ninth episode of Season 5, the conclusion is filled with intense action that smoothly transitions into the final chapter of the You series. The plot takes an unexpected turn when Joe manages to break free from captivity and fires at Kate. What’s even more astonishing is that Maddie confines Joe in the cellar and sets Mooney’s bookstore ablaze. Anna Camp delivers a remarkable performance as a vengeful character in this scene, leaving viewers eager for her role in Scream 7.
While some series might choose to end Kate’s story here, You season 5 promises a continuation for viewers. In an unexpected turn of events, Kate manages to knock out Joe, giving her a chance to confront him. Louise sends Dom a message and apologizes, admitting that Marienne is alive. She acknowledges her mistake in trusting a serial killer and swindler like Joe. Then comes a chilling revelation: Kate discloses to Joe that she’s aware he hid the key to the cage inside his arm. As Kate and Joe appear to be dying in the bookstore, she makes this shocking declaration.
“Till death do us part.”
The ongoing cat-and-mouse play between Kate and Joe persists as he admits to killing her father, to which she retorts, “All your wives meeting untimely ends in fires.” In a clever turn of events, Joe thanks Joe for his confession, unaware that she had been recording him. Nadia will forward the recording to the authorities.
When Louise ventures into the basement, Joe assumes she’s there to rescue him. However, unlike many couples in horror films who provide comic relief amidst tension, Louise has a few surprises up her sleeve. Instead of helping him, she leads him outside and then an unexpected event unfolds during You season 5: Joe proposes to Louise. Intriguingly, she accepts his proposal with the intention of controlling him further. In a thrilling instance, Louise reflects:
It seems there’s no one else in the world capable of standing against you. Contrary to what you might think, however, you are not the main character in this tale. That role belongs to me, and I assure you, you won’t even notice my arrival when it happens.
You season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
