Summary
- Characters in Wind Breaker showcase a range of skills, but only a few reach the elite tier of fighters.
- Some fighters like Yukinari Arima and Minoru Kanuma lack skills and fall short in matches.
- Loyalty and determination, while admirable, do not compensate for a lack of combat skills in characters like Atsushi Nagato.
In the latest installment of “Wind Breaker,” its thrilling second season, audiences have been treated to a steady supply of intense action sequences that leave a significant impact, either creating indelible memories for viewers or resulting in a harsh defeat for the characters.
In the realm of Wind Breaker, each combatant brings their distinctive strengths – raw force and strategic acumen – to the table. However, only a select few have the requisite skills to ascend to the pinnacle of excellence. Courage alone won’t guarantee triumph in Furin or Shishitoren, despite the fierce determination these fighters possess. They may not be utterly incapable in battle, but they will continue to reside at the lower echelons of global combatants.
8. Yukinari Arima
Sugishita’s Simplest Work
- First Appearance: Episode 3
- Affiliation: Shishitoren
In Shishitoren’s regular circle is Yukinari Arima, sporting a half-shaved hairstyle and a rough exterior. Often perceived as tough, he also possesses a soft side. Renowned for his supposed ability to crack the ribs of his adversaries with raw power, he surprisingly loses against Sugishita in their encounter.
In the match against Sugishita, his limited abilities were clearly evident. Despite attempting to deceive him, it didn’t make much difference since he was quickly defeated with only a single maneuver. The fight concluded almost instantly, revealing him as a character who possesses only a few talents and a facade.
7. Minoru Kanuma
All Bark And No Bite
- First Appearance: Episode 3
- Affiliation: Shishitoren
There’s absolutely no one else quite like Minoru Kanuma when it comes to embodying the spirit of Shishitoren. I must admit, he carries himself with an air of confidence that can be off-putting at times, but don’t let that fool you. He’s not just a pretty face; he’s physically fit and knows how to throw a punch or two, more than your average troublemaker.
However, his fighting style lacks the flair that some might expect. He tries to project an image of calm and composure, but when it comes down to the real deal, he can get a bit shaky. But hey, we all have our moments, right? That’s what makes him human, and I, for one, find his journey fascinating!
In his private duel with Suo, it became evident that he wasn’t a skilled fighter at all. Even though Kanuma appeared overconfident prior to the fight, he was swiftly outmaneuvered by Suo without much struggle. He seemed deficient in defensive tactics and lacked any significant fighting technique. In fact, he failed to land even one punch and stumbled around like a youngster during the entire match.
6. Tsukasa Takanashi
The Protector Who Can’t Protect Himself
- First Appearance: Episode 12
- Affiliation: Bofurin
Among the first to support Anzai unhesitatingly is Takanashi. He’s the kind of person who is always ready to help his fellow students, much like how he stepped in to shield Kurita during the battle with KEEL.
Despite his unwavering loyalty, Takanashi consistently ranks at the lower end of fighters in the Wind Breaker series. His selfless actions towards others don’t make up for how easily he gets outmatched by opponents. He may manage to stand his ground in a fight, but sheer determination isn’t enough; he’s still not on par with fighters like Sakura and others at the top tier.
5. Masaki Anzai
Courage Without Capability
- First Appearance: Episode 12
- Affiliation: Bofurin
Regarding friendliness, Anzai stands out as one of the top first-year students at Bofurin. Unfortunately, his combat abilities aren’t as impressive. Despite being part of Bofurin, his fighting skills are quite weak. This was evident during the KEEL attacks when he tried to provoke him; Anzai ended up getting beaten and unable to defend himself effectively.
During the struggle to save Nagato when confronting KEEL, Anzai’s battle with their leader turns out to be insignificant, as just a single strike from him leaves him unconscious throughout the entire fight. Although Anzai maintains his enthusiasm, he lacks the power needed to go up against opponents that even the top-tier members of Bofurin can manage.
4. Yuri Kakiuchi
No Standout Moments
- First Appearance: Episode 12
- Affiliation: Bofurin
Among Bofurin’s three-member group, you’ll frequently find Kakiuchi joined by Takanashi and Kurita. Typically, these three operate together, yet they collectively lack the power one might expect. Kakiuchi, despite his reliability and willingness to support his team during battles, has shown signs of struggling to keep pace with them.
During the KEEL arc, it became glaringly apparent to fans just how inadequate his fighting abilities were. Alone, his efforts often went unnoticed by others. His attempts to improve his fighting prowess failed as KEEL’s fierce power consistently outdid him. The battle’s momentum left him struggling, with little opportunity for self-defense. Despite Kakiuchi’s distinctive attitude, his combat skills lagged significantly behind those of other team members.
3. Junpei Kurita
Presence Of Loyalty Without Strength
- First Appearance: Episode 2
- Affiliation: Bofurin
This individual from Bofurin is known for maintaining a composed personality and consistently demonstrating loyalty within the team. He can frequently be spotted on the sidelines during crucial situations, providing support to his teammates. However, it’s important to note that while he may not always appear as strong, his contributions are undeniably valuable to the team.
From my perspective, Kurita seems to struggle due to his limited resources – power, speed, and combat intensity. His absence on the front lines diminishes his influence in skirmishes, making it challenging to discern any extraordinary talents he might possess. While he maintains a strong presence within his team, he is often overshadowed by the formidable figures that dominate the scene around him, leaving an underwhelming impression.
2. Akihiko Nirei
The One With A Sharp Mind But Soft Punches
- First Appearance: Episode 2
- Affiliation: Bofurin
In simpler terms, during his freshman year at Furin High, Bofurin’s Vaisravana Unit finds itself associated with an initial stumbling block. Placed among Sakura’s key associates, it becomes evident that there’s a significant disparity in their fighting abilities, primarily due to Bofurin’s (Nirei) lack of combat skills.
Nirei was driven to attend Furin High due to his past struggles with bullying, yet when faced with danger, he finds it hard to take action. Despite his lack of combat skills, Nirei is determined to learn self-defense techniques from Suo. Though he can’t fight, Nirei stands firm in his desire to stay at Furin and become a protector for the town, aspiring to be a hero.
1. Atsushi Nagato
Trapped In The Wrong Crew
- First Appearance: Episode 13
- Affiliation: KEEL (Former)
One of Anzai’s old friends from childhood is Atsushi Nagato, with whom he had a connection long before their lives diverged. Later on, Anzai chose to become a part of KEEL, one of Wind Breaker’s deadliest criminal groups. Even though Nagato was in such a merciless organization, he was often used as a target for attacks by other gang members instead of being treated as an ally, which made it evident that his standing within the group wasn’t very high.
During all the efforts Anzai made to save him, Nagato stubbornly refused to depart, opting instead to remain with a band that had inflicted grievous harm upon him, preferring their company over leaving. It’s evident from his presence in KEEL that Nagato is one of the least formidable fighters to bear the KEEL title.
