Sydney Sweeney is all set to appear in a real-life interpretation of a popular video game. It’s anticipated that she will portray one of the main characters in the production titled “Split Fiction“.
Split Fiction, created by Hazelight Studios and distributed by Electronic Arts, is a cooperative action-adventure game launched on March 6, 2025. Set in a simulation of their own stories, Mio Hudson and Zoe Foster, two aspiring authors, find themselves trapped when a publishing deal goes sour. Announced at The Game Awards on December 12, 2024, it was released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Within two weeks of its release, plans for a live-action adaptation were confirmed. At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, Story Kitchen reportedly began assembling a creative team to develop this feature. The movie rights attracted intense competition among major Hollywood studios, with Amazon ultimately securing them. Currently, one of its leads has been cast for the film.
In the upcoming movie “Split Fiction,” the actor from the “Anyone But You” series has been confirmed for a leading role, according to Variety. The film is set to be directed by Jon M. Chu, renowned for his work on films like “Wicked” (2024), “Crazy Rich Asians” (2018), “Now You See Me 2,” and “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” (2013). The screenplay will be penned by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, writers of the hit Marvel Studios film “Deadpool & Wolverine” in 2024. Production companies Story Kitchen and Electric Somewhere, led by Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson, and Chu himself, will produce the movie. Sweeney will not only serve as an executive producer but will also play one of the main characters. As for who Sweeney will portray between Zoe or Mio in the live-action remains undisclosed.
In the game “Split Fiction,” Zoe and Mio are two of six authors invited by Rader Publishing to test a device called “The Machine.” This machine lets writers immerse themselves in the stories they’ve written. The creators, or authors in this case, are enclosed within a protective bubble as they explore their own narratives. Reserved and focused on her compensation, Mio starts to feel anxious and decides to withdraw from the experiment. Rader, however, insists she continues, leading to a struggle that ends with Mio accidentally entering Zoe’s fictional world, trapping them both within Zoe’s story. A malfunction occurs, transporting them to Mio’s science-fiction tale instead. Along their journey, they encounter more technical issues since The Machine is not designed for multiple occupants. This marks the beginning of an exciting adventure.
Many find the allure of Split Fiction lies within its thrilling gameplay, offering a unique blend of creativity and emotional immersion. It tackles relatable themes such as self-discovery, growth, and cooperation. As yet undetermined is Sweeney’s character, who could be either Zoe or Mio – two distinct personalities. Zoe embodies extroversion, optimism, and a love for fantasy that manifests in her transformations into magical entities and control of mythical creatures, armed with enchanted weapons. In contrast, Mio, a city-raised introvert who leans toward science fiction, expresses this interest through her writing, which often portrays her as a gravity-defying ninja wielding an energy sword or donning an advanced exosuit commanding drones.
Given Sweeney’s diverse roles in past films, it’s plausible she could deliver an impressive portrayal for either Zoe or Mio in the Madame Web movie. However, considering her physical features, Sweeney seems more suitable to play Zoe, who is described as having long, wavy auburn hair, pale complexion, and green eyes.
As for the live-action version of “Split Fiction“, there hasn’t been a set release date yet since it’s currently undergoing early development stages.
