Four years after the 2021 release of Mortal Kombat by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, fans can look forward to a continuation of the story in October 2025 with Mortal Kombat 2. Directed once again by Simon McQuoid, this sequel will delve deeper into the Mortal Kombat tournament, while introducing iconic characters such as Johnny Cage, Kitana, Quan Chi, Shao Kahn, and more to the movie universe. The plot will continue to follow Cole Young, along with Johnny Cage and other Earthrealm champions, as they strive to thwart an invasion led by Shao Kahn. If Mortal Kombat 2 proves popular, it may inspire NetherRealm Studios to incorporate Cole Young into the games.
The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie in 2025 will have a unique story compared to the arcade game Mortal Kombat 2 from 1993, and it’s expected that this storyline will differ from the sequel of the 2023 Mortal Kombat 1 film as well.
Mortal Kombat’s Cole Young Explained
Since the start of the 2021 movie “Mortal Kombat”, Cole Young’s family lineage has been tainted by a past catastrophe. In the 17th century, several members of the Japanese Shirai Ryu clan were brutally murdered by their adversaries, the Lin Kuei clan, who were led by the cryomancer Bi-Han, also known as Sub-Zero. Among the victims in this attack were Hanzo Hasashi, his wife Harumi, and their son Satoshi. Remarkably, Hanzo Hasashi’s unidentified daughter managed to survive, having been concealed by Satoshi and later saved by the deity Lord Raiden. Fast forward about 400 years, Cole Young was born as an American orphan with no knowledge of his Shirai Ryu lineage, despite being a direct descendant of Hasashi’s daughter.
In the course of life, our protagonist transformed into an MMA champion and eventually wed a woman named Allison. They shared a daughter named Emily together. One ominous day, Sub-Zero threatened Young and his family, fearing that the prophecy stating the bloodline of Hanzo Hasashi would bring victory in Mortal Kombat’s tenth tournament was about to unfold. With assistance from Jax Briggs, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Raiden, Young discovered his destiny: defending Earthrealm in the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament, as he is a direct descendant of Hanzo Hasashi. Upon returning home to safeguard Emily and Allison from Goro, Young unveiled his magical arcana powers, empowering him with golden armor and tonfas in battle.
Cole Young and Scorpion’s Battle Against Sub-Zero
After Young overcame Goro, Raiden presented the MMA fighter with a sword previously wielded by Hasashi as a token. As Earthrealm’s chosen protectors battled Shang Tsung’s forces, Sub-Zero attacked and froze Young’s loved ones, pushing him away from his allies. Trapped in an icy gymnasium, Young sought to battle Sub-Zero but was close to defeat until the ancient blade invoked Hasashi’s spirit, now recognized as Scorpion, from the Netherrealm. Together, Young and Scorpion rescued Allison and Emily and eventually defeated Sub-Zero. Following this, Raiden dispatched Young and his team to locate additional fighters across Earthrealm, with Young heading to Hollywood to enlist Johnny Cage, paving the way for the events of 2025’s Mortal Kombat 2.
The Potential of Cole Young in Liu Kang’s Timeline
In the original Mortal Kombat game, Titan Liu Kang is depicted as having fashioned a completely new universe following his acquisition of the Hourglass and manipulating specific occurrences to ensure maximum serenity and calmness. Compared to earlier timelines, this one exhibits subtle and significant variations, like Scorpion now being Kuai Liang, the former second Sub-Zero, Raiden no longer serving as a deity, and Cyrax and Sektor being female instead of male. Since Mortal Kombat 1 serves as a reboot, not every character from its nearly three-decade-long history is featured in the game, but downloadable content has introduced fresh fighters yet to make their debut in the franchise, such as the Terminator’s T-1000.
It’s possible that Cole Young, with his recent updates and developments, might appear as downloadable content in future editions of Mortal Kombat 1 or even in Mortal Kombat 2 after its release in 2025. However, his backstory and character development may need to be reworked significantly. Instead of being Scorpion’s descendant, Cole could be introduced as one of the latest Shirai Ryu recruits along with the young Hanzo Hasashi. This would keep their clan connection intact but take both characters on new paths never before explored in any format. Another possibility is that NetherRealm might introduce a cinematic version of Cole Young into the games through a non-canonical DLC appearance, similar to how certain versions of Takeda exist in alternate timelines within Mortal Kombat 1.
