Exciting tidings for fans of The Mortuary Assistant! The live-action version of the game has just secured its principal actors, including a face that Arrow’s CW show audience may recognize.
The movie “The Mortuary Assistant” is an adaption from the 2022 indie horror video game of the same name by Brian Clarke. Produced by Epic Pictures under their Dread label, the film retains the chilling atmosphere of the original, with Rebecca Owens, a novice mortician at the spooky River Fields Mortuary, finding herself tormented by spectral beings that inhabit her workplace as she prepares corpses for burial. This popular video game has sold over 400,000 units and earned close to $1 million in its first month on Steam, making it no wonder that a live-action adaptation was quickly announced with Jeremy Kipp set to direct from the screenplay co-written by Tracee Beebe and Clarke.
Willa Holland and Paul Sparks Will Star As Rebecca Owens and Raymond Delver in The Mortuary Assistant
Jeremy Kipp is Still Pegged as Director
According to an exclusive report from Deadline, it’s been revealed that 33-year-old actress Willa Holland, known for her role in Arrow, will take on the character Rebecca. She’ll be starring alongside 53-year-old Paul Sparks, recognized from House of Cards, who portrays Raymond Delver, Rebecca’s mentor and mortician boss. The film promises to delve deeper into the game’s mythology while maintaining the terrifying atmosphere that players are accustomed to, with creator Kipp describing it as “scary as hell.” Clarke, the creator, is pleased with the director, whom he deems “insanely skilled,” and considers their collaboration one of his career highlights. He also expresses approval for Willa and Paul’s involvement in the project.
Despite boasting more than a dozen acting credits spanning two decades, including “Straw Dogs” and “A Summer in Genoa”, it’s her portrayal of Thea Queen – sister to DC’s billionaire vigilante Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in the CW series “Arrow” and “The Flash” – that will likely be most memorable. Fortunately, Epic Pictures can attest to her experience with video game roles, having lent her voice to the recurring character Aqua in the “Kingdom Hearts” franchise.
Meanwhile, Sparks boasts a more refined acting career compared to his fellow actor, with notable roles in shows such as House of Cards and Midnight Special. He even earned an Emmy nomination for his work on the former series. Furthermore, he’s not just an actor; he’s also a director, having directed Slapface, Don’t Pick Up, and Black Wake.
The exact launch date for “The Mortuary Assistant” hasn’t been set yet, but we can still make an educated guess about when it might arrive. Typically in Hollywood, the time from casting to release for a film is around one to two years; for low-budget horror films like “The Mortuary Assistant”, this period could be as short as six months to a year. This means that fans who get to see their favorite game adapted into a live-action movie quickly will form an exclusive group. However, it’s important to note that the excitement and commercial success likely won’t reach the level of blockbusters like “Sonic the Hedgehog” or “A Minecraft Movie”.
