The anime series titled “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” is proving to be one of the most intriguing shows this season, and it has the potential to rank among the top reimaginings of the classic Mobile Suit Gundam series. So far, its plot exhibits a level of audacity that isn’t afraid to reshape the events from “Gundam 0079“.

Among the many mysteries that long-time Gundam enthusiasts ponder, perhaps none is more captivating than the question of Char Aznable’s current whereabouts. In the original series, Char played a significant antagonist role, but in this new installment, his part remains enigmatic. Could he have met an unknown fate? Or has he found himself in some hidden corner of the universe?

What Do We Know About Char In Gundam GQuuuuuuX?

In the series “Gundam GQuuuuuuX”, Char Aznable stumbles upon the RX-78-02 Gundam during a mission on Earth. As a result, Amuro Ray no longer pilots this mobile suit, instead it’s Char who takes control of it during the One Year War.

In this particular universe, the RX-78-02, commonly known as the White Gundam, was an advanced robot suit manufactured by Earth Federation. When it fell into Char’s possession, this mobile suit became instrumental for the Zion Kingdom during their conflict. By studying and replicating its design, Zion managed to create more Gundams of their own.

In this alternate timeline, Lady Kycilia instructed Char to fly the RX-78-02, now adorned with red to reflect his character. On its own, the RX-78-02 wouldn’t significantly benefit Zeon, but Char’s exceptional skills as a pilot and Newtype were decisive factors. Interestingly, it appears that Amuro Ray has not allied himself with the Earth Federation forces in this version of events.

Despite efforts to control the Psycommu on Char’s Gundam during the skirmish against the Federation in Solomon, they malfunctioned instead. This incident ultimately led the Federation to agree on a truce. Unfortunately, ever since that day, Char and his Gundam have vanished without a trace.

How Is That Different From Char In The Original Gundam?

Originally, Amuro Ray stumbled upon the RX-78-02 and began to pilot it. Despite his youth, he was inexorably pulled into the conflict and enlisted with the Earth Federation troops. A year later, they emerged victorious against Zeon following a fierce battle.

In this series, we find an intriguing juxtaposition. Ray, who lacks military training, operates a sophisticated battle machine, while Char, a seasoned soldier, pilots what seems to be a less advanced one. As the narrative unfolds, Ray becomes more adept with his mobile suit; however, there’s a significant gap in their combat proficiency at the story’s outset between the two characters.

What Can We Guess Considering The Original Timeline?

Given that it’s just the war’s result that has shifted, not the characters’ original intentions, then it would be reasonable to assume Char should not have developed any significant affection for the Principality of Zeon. After all, Char’s real name is Casval Rem Deikum, and he is the son of Zeon Zum Deikun, a crucial figure in establishing the Republic of Zeon and its secession from the Earth Federation.

Subsequently, Deikun passed away under suspicions of a heart attack, and Degwin Sodo Zabi asserted he had been appointed as Deikun’s successor without providing any substantial proof. Later on, Degwin renamed the nation to “Principality of Zeon” and elevated his own family into prominent positions.

Given all these circumstances, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to speculate that Char might have been plotting a revenge coup (or restoration, if you will) to overthrow the Zabi family and take control in Zeon.

In Episode 2, our conversation with Challia Bull seems to suggest that I had been contemplating a potential upheaval or change of power.

You won’t need to struggle choosing between Lady Kycilia and the top commander any longer, as Lieutenant Challia Bull offers a new approach…

This revised sentence maintains the original meaning while using more natural phrasing and making it easier for readers to understand.

Where Could Char Be In New The Series?

After the mission in Solomon, whatever plans Char initially had, he altered them. Ever since then, Challia Bull, who accompanied him on the mission, has been searching for Char, sensing that some event during the mission may have caused him to shift his course.

In an alternate scenario where pre-war events remained unchanged, it is possible that Char’s sibling, Artesia Som Deikun, is alive and possibly working for the Earth Federation under the alias “Sayla Mass.” However, her fate in this timeline remains unknown; she could be continuing to serve the Federation, or she might have met a different end, or perhaps chosen a distinct path after the truce.

As a bystander, I ponder: Since Sayla was a dedicated member of the Federation during the conflict, there’s a possibility that she might have been dispatched to the Solomon mission. If she should manifest in GQuuuuuuX, her presence could unveil crucial insights about Char’s whereabouts. Any experiences she had there may be connected to his sister.

It’s challenging to conceive of a situation where Char drastically reversed his stance towards Zeon and abandoned the pursuit of eliminating the Zabis. A more plausible scenario is that he chose to approach things differently, recognizing the destructive nature and suffering wars inflict. Although aligning with the Federation might be too extreme, it’s possible that Char is operating covertly, and there’s a chance we’ll witness him working in tandem with the Federation at some point in the future.
