.

In essence, even though the anime adaptation of this cherished tale may not alter the main narrative in the future, it presents differences substantial enough to catch off-guard readers familiar with the source material who assumed they had a grasp on how events would unfold. Notably, Episode 3 of “The Beginning After The End” has introduced the most modifications among all episodes so far.

Changed Content

Arthur Suddenly Appears Unharmed

At the conclusion of episode 2, Arthur is depicted plummeting from a precipice, seemingly meeting his demise. In his final moments, Arthur expresses his longing to serve as an older sibling to the yet-to-be-born child carried by his expectant mother.

Indeed, I was set to become an older sibling. How wonderful that could have been.” (Arthur as he tumbles off a cliff)

In the comic book, Arthur finds himself at the foot of a precipice after miraculously surviving a fall, albeit severely wounded. He flits between consciousness and unconsciousness for a while before managing to rise. A puzzling voice then echoes around him, leading Arthur to initially believe it’s the ghostly remnant of the bandit he had brought down with him.

Yet, the voice turns out to be amicable. With no alternative paths, Arthur embarks on a quest to locate the friendly voice, eventually discovering a stream where he refreshes himself by drinking and bathing. The entity admires his courage, as it has been observing him. Arthur feels self-conscious, but presses on, continuing his journey towards the cave where the voice originates. Unfortunately, he slips and falls into a deep chasm, encountering a massive creature adorned in dark armor.

In the anime, the sequence of events following the cliff fall changes significantly. The scene at the beginning of episode 3 finds Arthur standing before a monster, seemingly unhurt and bewildered, with little context provided. Just one sentence seems to connect these two moments that appear discontinuous in the timeline.

What on earth is that creature? And why have I ended up facing it?” – Arthur’s inner musings, taken aback by the monster before him.

Afterwards, I swiftly attempt to assault the ominous armored figure, yet my effort is effortlessly dismissed. Due to the missing dialogue, their interaction follows a slightly altered course, but eventually, Arthur and the grotesque figure, Sylvia, form an alliance, mirroring the dynamics from the manhwa, as it transpires.

“You have a lot to learn still, little Arthur.” -Sylvia after Arthur tried to attack her.

The Episode Changes His Ability

Arthur’s Mana Ability is Slightly Reworked

As the story progresses, it deviates slightly from its representation in the manhwa, yet the fundamental narrative largely stays consistent. One significant discrepancy lies in the manner by which Arthur acquires his mana ability from Sylvia, as opposed to how it was portrayed in the manhwa.

The storyline evolves a bit differently than what’s shown in the comic, but the primary plot remains similar after this point. However, the way Arthur learns his mana ability from Sylvia is presented differently compared to how it was depicted in the comic.

In the comic (manhwa), the power is portrayed as a skill for simultaneously gathering mana and utilizing it for combat magic. Yet, in the animated series (anime), the ability that Sylvia instructs Arthur on, known as the “Mana Beast,” has a unique explanation.

Arthur noticed that Sylvia was drawing mana and casting spells simultaneously…It’s like refueling in mid-air while piloting an aircraft.

In the comic (manhwa), Arthur discovers a way to absorb mana without needing to pause and meditate. However, in the animated adaptation (anime), it appears that Arthur’s skill extends beyond just absorption, enabling him to perform spells while simultaneously absorbing mana. The scene where he masters this ability is depicted differently, with more emphasis on Arthur’s magical abilities rather than his movements.

In this latest installment of “The Beginning After The End“, the show appears to be preparing to deviate more from its original source in order to tailor the narrative for anime. It remains uncertain just how many alterations the anime version will introduce and whether these changes will meet with approval among series enthusiasts.

The Beginning After the End can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
