Lorcana Set 8 Needs to Break Rapunzel’s Grip

Summary

  • Set 7 strengthened Sapphire with powerful Legendaries like Scrooge McDuck, impacting the meta significantly.
  • Despite recent bans, Sapphire remains strong; Amber urgently needs an alternative to Rapunzel.
  • Introducing new draw engines for Amber in set 8 could solve the issue of Rapunzel’s dominance and high price.

2025 has proven to be a significant year for Disney’s Lorcana game, with the release of Archazia’s Island set in March and its impact on the game’s dynamics being quite substantial. Set 7, which followed shortly after, made the already potent Sapphire ink even more dominant due to new powerful Lorcana Legendaries introduced in Archazia’s Island, like Scrooge McDuck – Resourceful Miser and Tamatoa – Happy as a Clam. These additions also strengthened the Sapphire ink further through Belle – Apprentice Inventor and other cards. As we move into set 8, it appears that all other ink colors may require similar attention, but one of them is in dire need of a substantial upgrade that the game has been neglecting since set 2.

Despite the recent prohibition of Hiram Flaversham – Toymaker and Fortisphere (known as Lorcana) on Sapphire, this color continues to hold considerable strength, particularly when combined with Ruby and Steel. The current decks exhibit more diversity than before the ban, but certain card archetypes are still developing and may not be fully capable of supporting specific color combinations or strategies. In the past, Amber, an Ink color, has been successful in pairing with Steel primarily, and to a lesser extent with other colors. However, it is apparent now that it urgently requires a substitute or at least an alternative to Rapunzel – Gifted with Healing.

Why Lorcana’s Rapunzel – Gifted with Healing Needs an Alternative

In the gaming realm of Lorcana, I can confidently say that Rapunzel – Gifted with Healing is undeniably one of the top cards to have in 2025. Given its legendary status and being the first set’s offering from Lorcana, it often comes at a premium price. In fact, you might find yourself spending anywhere between $50 to over $60 for this card, depending on its condition and the seller. The foil version tends to be even more costly, while the Enchanted variant can set you back a staggering $190-$200!

The cost of Rapunzel – Gifted with Healing is high for several reasons. Firstly, this Lorcana card is exceptionally powerful, boasting a cost of 4, being Inkable, having a power level of 1/5, questing for two, and possessing the Gleam and Glow ability that enables players to heal up to 3 damage from their characters while drawing additional cards. Secondly, it’s a Legendary card from a set that is scarcely printed and difficult to find, making it hard to obtain. Lastly, its power and rarity make it highly sought-after for most Amber decks, which creates the issue of its high price.

In simpler terms, the reason Rapunzel – Gifted with Healing is so popular within the game Amber is that there are very few alternatives like it available. While there are some draw engines in this color ink, they’re not as powerful or plentiful. Instead of removing or phasing out Rapunzel, Ravensburger could introduce one or two new draw engines for the Amber faction in the Reign of Jafar expansion. This would address both the need for more drawing options and the dominance of Rapunzel.

Lorcana Can Kill Two Birds With One Stone in Set 8

Introducing alternative characters like Healing-Endowed (not Rapunzel) in the game could make the experience less monotonous, more accessible, and potentially cheaper for players. This move would alleviate the need for constant reprints of The First Chapter by Ravensburger. It’s a mutually beneficial solution, but it can only materialize if set 8 introduces unique mechanics, perhaps incorporating potent card-drawing tools specifically designed for Amber. These tools could be Lorcana’s Dual-Ink cards instead of standard ones, providing a viable method to draw cards effectively that doesn’t rely on Rapunzel. Whether this innovative approach will be adopted by Ravensburger remains to be seen, but it’s definitely worth exploring the possibility.
