As a gaming enthusiast, I used to believe that nothing could match the inventiveness of human creativity. But lately, I’ve started questioning my convictions, particularly after hearing discussions among some Japanese game developers about the role of AI in our field.
Yoko Taro Thinks We’ll Live Long Enough To See AI Takeover Game Creators’ Jobs

In a recent conversation with the Japanese gaming publication Famitsu (translated mechanically), Taro and other Japanese creators expressed their views frankly about how artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing game creation.
At the discussion were Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi from Too Kyo Games. For those who may not know, Kodaka is renowned for creating the Danganronpa series, while Uchikoshi is well-known in Japan for his work on the Zero Escape visual novel games. Alongside these two gentlemen were Jiro Ishii, the producer of the adventure game Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, and Yoko Taro, who is famous for overseeing the Nier video game franchise.
Uchikoshi expresses concern that as AI advances, it might eventually dominate the creation of adventure games, making human game developers obsolete. This idea sparked a reaction from Taro, who mused, “I share your viewpoint. It seems possible that in half a century, human game creators could find themselves in a position similar to that of bards, no longer necessary in the face of AI.
When asked if AI could generate the intricate worlds and tales that game developers build, Yoko responded straightforwardly, “Absolutely, it can.” She elaborated, “Imagine an intelligent AI taking on the role of writer. Instead of merely producing a script as dictated, it would likely anticipate and craft its own unique storylines.
Taro elaborates on his idea, stating, “I believe we’ll transition from a time when we need to mimic our favorite creators’ styles to an era where AI can create scenarios we enjoy. It will be similar to the improvement of recommendation systems, where AI learns users’ preferences and generates storylines that they would find appealing.
Though Taro’s words are a bit concerning, I fervently hope they don’t materialize. Regardless of our feelings, AI appears to be a permanent fixture in our future. As evidence, Sony admits to testing it for games, and Microsoft offers an AI-created game that you can play directly from your web browser.
Here’s another way of saying it: I hope that AI won’t lead to dull, automated artwork and games. Recently, a developer named LocalThunk (who works on Balatro) expressed strong criticism towards this technology.
