Similar to numerous prominent superheroes in DC Comics, Superman is connected to a team often referred to as his “family.” This term, popularized by fans, is commonly used to denote this collection of characters. The “Superman Family” consists of diverse powerful individuals, several of whom share powers similar to the Man of Steel.
Over time, various iterations of this team have emerged, hailing from distinct periods in the DC Comics universe. Each version displays a different degree of power and skills. This compilation concentrates on contemporary portrayals of the Superman clan and orders them according to their strength level.
10. Superwoman (Lana Lang)
First Appeared In Superboy #10 (October 1950)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Transformation (Energy Conversion, Electromagnetic Spectrum Manipulation, Electrokinesis, Electricity Absorption, Electro-Blast, Superhuman Strength, Invulnerability, Flight, Enhanced Senses, Enhanced Hearing, Heat Vision)
- Abilities: Electrical Engineering, Science, Journalism
Lana Lang made her debut in the 1950s as Clark Kent’s childhood sweetheart within the Superboy comic book series. However, it wasn’t until the New 52 reboot of the DC Universe that she acquired superpowers and transformed from a mere supporting character to a significant figure in the Superman narrative.
In the aftermath of Flashpoint, two distinct Supermen inhabited the same reality. When one of them perished, Lana harnessed solar energy, bestowing upon her the capacity to absorb and use energy much like a Kryptonian. This transformation also gifted her with the ability to redistribute energy, causing her to assume the persona of Superwoman. Given that she is only beginning her superhero career, she does not yet qualify for a top-tier ranking on this list.
9. Mon-El (Lar Gand)
First Appeared In Superboy #89 (June 1961)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Daxamite Physiology (Solar Energy Absorption, Heat Vision, Super-Hearing, Enhanced Vision, Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision, Telescopic Vision, X-Ray Vision, Microscopic Vision, Infrared Vision, Flight, Invulnerability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Speed, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Reflexes, Super-Breath, Longevity)
- Abilities: Aviation, Leadership
In the intricate history of DC Comics, Mon-El has appeared in multiple forms due to different adaptations and alternate realities. Although his backstory changes a bit, he’s generally thought to hail from Daxam, a planet next to Krypton. Like a Kryptonian, he gains powers under Earth’s yellow sun. However, unlike Kryptonians, Mon-El is vulnerable to lead instead of Kryptonite.
Mon-El is primarily recognized as part of the Legion of Superheroes, a group of champions in the 31st century. Initially transported to this era by Superman, who went by Superboy then, Mon-El later became critically ill from lead poisoning and was sent to the Phantom Zone. It wasn’t until the 31st century that Brainiac 5 found a cure for him. Despite his impressive abilities, Mon-El’s weakness against lead, a common element, significantly reduces his overall power level.
8. Power Girl (Kara Zor-L)
All Star Comics #58 (February 1976)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Kryptonian Physiology (Solar Energy Absorption, Heat Vision, Super-Hearing, Enhanced Vision, Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision, Telescopic Vision, X-Ray Vision, Microscopic Vision, Infrared Vision, Flight, Invulnerability, Enhanced Immunity, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Speed, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Reflexes, Super-Breath, Longevity, Sound Manipulation), Astral Punching
- Abilities: Business Management, Genius Level Intellect, Journalism, Martial Arts, Boxing, Mathematics
Power Girl, a character, maneuvers through the intricacies of multiple realities within the DC Comics multiverse. She’s essentially an adaptation of Supergirl from Earth-Two, bearing the same origins and abilities. By various methods, she moved to what is known as Prime-Earth, where she assumed the role of a hero under her human identity, Karen Starr, and also goes by the alias Paige Setler.
During the course of her adventures, Power Girl eventually became part of the Justice League of America team. Certain depictions of her history show that she joined the Justice Society of America beforehand, which served as a precursor to the Justice League. With powers similar to a Kryptonian, she exhibits great strength; however, her complex background somewhat diminishes her stature.
7. Eradicator
First Appeared In Action Comics Annual #2 (June 1989)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Kryptonian Clone Body (Solar Energy Absorption, Superhuman Strength, Invulnerability, Superhuman Stamina, Flight, Superhuman Speed, Super-Breath, Super Hearing, Enhanced Vision, Heat Vision), Energy Projection (Cybernetic Awareness, Mechanokinesis, Enhanced Intellect, Telepathy)
- Abilities: Computer Operation, Medicine
The Artifact Known as The Eradicator hails from the planet Krypton, and its background can differ depending on the tale. It is most famously recognized for its part in the “Death of Superman” narrative, where it was one of four characters who claimed to be the genuine Superman following his presumed demise. The Eradicator’s purpose was to safeguard Kryptonian traditions and even constructed the Fortress of Solitude.
After Superman stopped his plan to change Earth into New Krypton, his being got combined with a scientist from S.T.A.R. Labs. Consequently, he joined the Outsiders and became a crucial ally for Superman. However, since the New 52 reboot, the Eradicator has not been effectively reintroduced in the revised DC Comics narrative.
6. The Super-Twins (Otho-Ra & Osul-Ra)
First Appeared In Action Comics #1038 (February 2022)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Phaelosian Physiology (Solar Radiation Absorption, Genesis Energy Absorption, Energy Manipulation, Optic Blast, Energy Construct Creation, Force Field, Heat Vision, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Speed, Invulnerability, Flight, Super-Breath, X-Ray Vision), Divine Empowerment, Summoning (Osul-Ra only)
- Abilities: Hand-to-Hand Combat (Basic), Weaponry, Swordsmanship
In a new twist for the Superman saga, we have two fresh additions to the family: Starchild (Otho-Ra) and Red Son (Osul-Ra). Often collectively called the Super-Duo, they share powers reminiscent of Kryptonians, as they stem from a branch of their genetic lineage that departed Krypton long ago, hailing from Phaelosia.
As Warworld launched an attack on New Phaelosia, the twins were mere infants, confined within the cells of this colossal planetary weapon. Later, Superman liberated them and ultimately took them in with Lois Lane. Superman guided them to hone their skills as superheroes, enabling them to develop a unique blend of powers reminiscent of Kryptonians, along with energy-based capabilities such as creating constructs from energy. Despite their youth, they form an impressive team, and there’s no doubt that their future holds immense potential for greatness as powerful heroes.
5. Superwoman (Lois Lane)
First Appeared In Action Comics #1 (June 1938)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Kryptonian Physiology (Solar Energy Absorption, Heat Vision, Super-Hearing, Enhanced Vision, Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision, Telescopic Vision, X-Ray Vision, Microscopic Vision, Infrared Vision, Flight, Invulnerability, Enhanced Immunity, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Speed, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Reflexes, Super-Breath, Longevity)
- Abilities: Hand-to-Hand Combat (Basic), Investigation, Journalism, Multilingualism
Lois Lane is primarily recognized for being the enduring sweetheart of Superman, a connection that originated in the 1930s. In the majority of her career, she was employed as a journalist at the Daily Planet and often provided support and assistance to Clark Kent during his heroic endeavors, acting as both a confidante and ally.
In 2016, during the DC Rebirth storyline, Lois Lane absorbed powers from an alternate Clark Kent, making her a Kryptonian with Superwoman as her title. She transformed into a hero in her own right, not just as Superman’s partner, but also his fellow superhero and an official member of the Superman Family. With years spent alongside powerful beings, Lois has shown heroic traits that surpass what one would typically associate with her background.
4. Superboy (Kon-El / Conner Kent)
First Appeared In Adventures Of Superman #500 (June 1993)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Kryptonian Physiology (Solar Energy Absorption, Heat Vision, Super-Hearing, Enhanced Vision, Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision, Telescopic Vision, X-Ray Vision, Microscopic Vision, Infrared Vision, Flight, Invulnerability, Enhanced Immunity, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Speed, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Reflexes, Super-Breath, Longevity), Tactile Telekinesis (Telekinetic Superhuman Strength, Telekinetic Flight, Telekinetic Force-Field, Telekinetic Force Blasts, Telekinetic Super Hearing)
- Abilities: Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced)
Initially appearing during the “Death of Superman” storyline, Superboy originated from Project Cadmus, a cloning project that combined both Superman’s and Lex Luthor’s genetic material. Four characters emerged claiming to be the true Superman. With the return of the original Superman, this clone established himself as his own character, founding the Young Justice team and eventually joining the Teen Titans.
Over the course of his adventure, he played the role of Superman’s foster child, loved him like kin, and regarded him as a younger sibling, even adopting the surname Kon-El. Being half Kryptonian and half human, Superboy’s powers aren’t quite as potent as those of a full-blooded Kryptonian. However, he makes up for this with tactile telekinesis, a skill that matches him against Superman. While he has garnered significant recognition in the comics and other forms of media, Superboy remains absent from any major live-action movie.
3. Superboy (Jon Kent)
First Appeared In Convergence: Superman #2 (July 2015)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Kryptonian-Human Hybrid Physiology (Solar Radiation Absorption, Invulnerability, Superhuman Strength, Super-Leaping:, Superhuman Stamina, Flight, Heat Vision, Solar Flare, Superhuman Senses, Enhanced Visual Perception, X-Ray Vision, Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision, Telescopic Vision, Microscopic Vision, Superhuman Smell, Superhuman Hearing, Superhuman Speed, Super-Breath, Energy Transference, Electrokinesis, Electro-Blast, Enhanced Speed, Enhanced Strength)
- Abilities: Heavy Machinery Operation, Indomitable Will, Multilingualism, Stealth
In the storyline known as The New 52, a fresh take on Superboy was introduced – Jon Kent, born from Clark Kent and Lois Lane. When Clark noticed that Jon had acquired powers, he started teaching him to control these abilities effectively when Jon was ten years old. Unfortunately, an accident caused Jon to perceive time differently for several weeks. As a result, he returned as a 17-year-old.
In the future, he ventured to the 31st century and teamed up with the League of Superheroes. Upon his return home, John took over as Superman in Clark’s absence, who was off on a mission to Warworld. John then became known as the first naturally-born Superman from Earth. He has unique abilities that Clark lacks; for instance, he can convert solar energy stored within him into electrical power, and he can boost his speed and strength beyond the typical Kryptonian’s capabilities on Earth.
2. Supergirl (Kara Zor-El)
First Appeared In Superman #123 (August 1958)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Kryptonian Physiology (Solar Energy Absorption, Heat Vision, Super-Hearing, Enhanced Vision, Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision, Telescopic Vision, X-Ray Vision, Microscopic Vision, Infrared Vision, Flight, Invulnerability, Enhanced Immunity, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Speed, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Reflexes, Super-Breath, Longevity, Energy Projection, Force Field, Sound Manipulation)
- Abilities: Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced), Martial Arts, Swordsmanship, Chi Manipulation, Multilingualism, Genius Level Intellect, Indomitable Will
I’m a diehard fan here, and it’s no secret that Supergirl ranks right up there as one of the most renowned characters in the Superman universe. She’s grown into an independent hero with her own live-action series and upcoming solo film, proving she can stand tall on her own. Kara Zor-El, Superman’s older cousin, shares his roots but had a different journey to Earth. Unlike Clark Kent, who arrived first, Kara landed much later due to certain complications.
At first, Kara found Earth confusing and isolating because Krypton was destroyed when she was already grown up. However, with time, she learned to fit in and became an essential ally to Superman. Eventually, she secured a place within the Justice League. Compared to many other heroes, Supergirl demonstrates remarkable effectiveness and has earned a prominent position on this list due to her powers being similar to those of her cousin, Superman.
1. Superman (Kal-El / Clark Kent)
First Appeared In Action Comics #1 (April 1938)
- Powers & Abilities:
- Powers: Kryptonian Physiology (Solar Radiation Absorption, Energy Absorption, Superhuman Strength, Shock Wave Projection, Superhuman Speed, Molecular Acceleration, Phasing, Intangibility, Vortex Creations, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Reflexes, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Senses, Super-Vision, Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision, Infrared Vision, Microscopic Vision, Radiation Production, Telescopic Vision, X-Ray Vision, Super-Hearing, Superhuman Taste, Accelerated Healing, Toxic Immunity, Enhanced Mental Process, Flight, Heat Vision, Solar Flare, Immortality, Interstellar Travel, Invulnerability, Energy Resistance, Super-Breath, Self-Sustenance, Tactile Telekinesis, Teleportation), Genesis Enhancement (Energy Construct Creation, Kryptonite Immunity)
- Abilities: Genius Level Intellect, Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced) (Boxing, Jujitsu, Wrestling), Indomitable Will, Intimidation, Investigation, Journalism, Leadership, Acrobatics, Meditation, Multilingualism, Weaponry, Stick Fighting, Swordsmanship
It’s not by chance that the most powerful member of the Superman Family is Superman himself, often referred to as the Man of Steel. He has consistently embodied the essence of a hero across multiple mediums, from comic books to movies, establishing a benchmark for what it takes to be a hero.
Born on the planet Krypton under the yellow sun of Earth, he draws power from its solar energy, bestowing upon him an array of superpowers that make him nearly indestructible – with the exception of exposure to Kryptonite or magic. Few superheroes match Clark’s capabilities in wielding such immense might. Guided by his solid principles and selflessness, he has become a beacon for many aspiring to emulate his path. Not only is he the most robust member of the Superman clan, but it can be said that he ranks among the most powerful characters across the entire DC universe.
