On April 29th, 2025, with the fresh reset of Destiny 2’s Episode Heresy, a brand new achievement, En Passant, has surfaced. This challenge requires players to solve an intriguing series of 27 chess-like puzzles hidden within the Unknown Space.
To initiate the task of unraveling this subtle riddle, it is essential that you’ve previously gathered the 60 chess pieces scattered throughout the gaming universe. Some can be found in patrolled areas, the Nether, the Court of Blades, or even purchased from vendors.
As a gamer, here’s my hint: The guide to gathering all the puzzle pieces is conveniently located in the link below. These pieces are scattered globally, but a whopping 33 can be discovered within the Nether. I suggest jumping into a private game round for a relaxed search of the easier ones, then toss the dice a few times to uncover the rest!
The chess challenges in this franchise mirror its enigmatic and puzzle-based style, making them incredibly challenging for those unfamiliar with the game. Not only is there no guidance provided, but also no instruction in the rules of chess; instead, you’re given vague hints to decipher on your own.

Chess Puzzle Endgame
I struggle significantly with chess, but I managed to find these solutions thanks to the community. It’s important to note that credit for solving these puzzles belongs to Destiny 2 community members and Esoterickk, who shares his insights on YouTube. This is an ongoing collaborative effort, and updates will be made as new findings emerge.
Puzzle Location And How To Access

Just as many victories involve several stages that measure your advancement, En Passant does too. Once you have located all the 60 pieces, navigate to Eris Morn’s apartment within The Last City on your Director’s map.

After reaching your apartment, navigate through the radiant green portal that transports you to the realm of Eris’s throne, known as the High Heresy. Once there, if you’re facing Eris from your initial position, simply rotate 90 degrees to your right and peer over the edge of the platform.
Directly underneath you is a hidden room that you’ll need to jump into.
Within the room stands a table bearing a chess set. Upon drawing nearer, you notice the query, “Lift the King?” Engaging with this question will transport you away from that location and deposit you within the enigmatic Antechamber of the Unknown Realm, known as The Unknown Space.
Within the Mysterious Foyer Lying Ahead, You’ll Discover a Place Where You Seemingly Shrink to Be Just Like Chess Pieces on a Board.
How It Works
To start off, there’s a standard 8×8 chessboard before you, divided into squares labeled from A to H running left to right, and numbers from 1 to 8 going bottom to top. For instance, the lower-left square is marked as A1, while the upper-right corner is H8.
As I move around the board, I find myself standing on symbols representing chess pieces. Each time I stand on one, I receive a message on my HUD’s action bar, informing me of the remaining actions I have for the buff or debuff section.
- Chess Pieces (from left to right): Knight, Rook, Pawn, Queen, Bishop. Standing on the plate and shooting a grid will place that piece on that grid, which will also subtract from the remaining actions you can take with this piece.
- Delete (left): Shooting a preexisting piece, regardless of color, will remove that piece from the board.
- Take (right): Shooting a preexisting black piece will replace it with a white piece.
- Reset: There’s an open book that allows you to reset the board and start over.
- Undo: There’s a claw-like panel that allows you to undo your last move.
Every Puzzle Solution

You’ll require all 60 pieces, as each one of them will come into play when you complete the puzzles.
As a gamer, here’s how I might put it: Alrighty then, let’s dive right in! There are 27 brain-tickling chess puzzles at your disposal, each one smoothly transitioning into the next with increasing complexity. The grand total is 27 puzzles. Cracking a puzzle will reward you with a “Got ’em!” message, some Glimmer, a shot at scoring a god roll weapon (maybe even a Shiny and/or Adept), and some juicy lore cards to flesh out the story.

Here’s the solution to each of them:
As a gamer, I merely need to step onto the matching spot and locate the desired grid. Once found, all I have to do is interact with it, effectively “shooting” or placing my piece on it. Keep in mind that the solutions provided will list the pieces first, followed by their corresponding tiles.

Chess Puzzle Endgame

After successfully completing all 27 challenges, the layout of the board changes, torches light up with a vibrant green flame, and a water-filled bowl materializes where the “Take” plate once stood. Now you have the freedom to put as many game pieces anywhere you desire on the rearranged board.
At this stage, you’ve reached the final round. The bowl will show a message “The Water Reveals…” Upon interacting with it, you’ll notice a pattern emerging, followed by a bird’s eye view of the game board. Additionally, you will receive the frequency of this occurrence. Previously used for undoing actions, the panel now displays the prompt “Offer Your Answer.”
In short, as you progress to the final round, a bowl will reveal patterns and provide a bird’s eye view of the game board. You will also be given the frequency of these occurrences, and the previously used undo function has been replaced with the “Offer Your Answer” prompt.
We’re yet to decipher the significance of these frequencies or figure out how they fit into this puzzle. Without a doubt, the brilliant minds from the chess community and Destiny aficionados will likely crack the code in just a few days. Some have pointed out that each frequency appears to be a tiny fragment of a much larger image, which could potentially tie into the upcoming Edge of Fate unveiling and Rite of Nine event scheduled for May 6th, 2025.
You won’t need to repeat the process of solving all 27 puzzles if your goal is to reach the Endgame. Instead, simply exit your game, and when you return, choose “Unknown Antechamber” in The Last City Destination on your Director. Then, select “Endgame.” If for some reason, you’d like to revisit the 27 puzzles, opt for “Middlegame.
At present, make note of the frequency codes you possess. If you wish to aid in identifying the associated image within our community, feel free to join the discussion on the Destiny subreddit. Additionally, you can contribute by submitting any codes you discover through a designated website.
It appears there are a total of 4096 distinct frequencies, each corresponding to a tile within a 64×64 grid. Feel free to visit the subreddits r/raidsecrets or r/DestinyTheGame for more information.
