Summary
- Xbox saw a massive boost in software sales in its recent quarterly earnings report.
- While hardware sales continue to dwindle, digital services have likely remained high.
- Xbox continues to shift away from console sales, instead focusing on software and streaming.
Toward the beginning of this generation, it became evident that Xbox’s dominance as a console manufacturer declined significantly, with the PlayStation 5 outperforming the Series X/S in sales. However, when things seemed grim, Microsoft made a shrewd move by shifting their focus away from the console.
Moving on from the successful “this is an Xbox” campaign last year, Microsoft’s Xbox software offensive has been consistently expanding. Notably, they have added blockbuster games like Indiana Jones And The Great Circle to Xbox Game Pass. Furthermore, by porting many of their first-party titles to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, Xbox has significantly broadened its audience.
It appears that after a prolonged period, the console rivalries might have reached their conclusion. As Xbox adopts new tactics, there’s a sense that they are no longer confined by the console market; in fact, CEO Phil Spencer seems to be openly acknowledging that streaming and software are the future for Xbox.
As a fervent supporter, I’ve been keeping an eye on Microsoft’s latest developments, and the Q3 2025 earnings report just dropped. Despite a noticeable dip in hardware sales, there’s a silver lining: software and content sales have surged by a significant 8%. This could be a testament to Xbox’s innovative strategy finally bearing fruit!

It’s worth mentioning that the figures for Xbox Game Pass sales are excluded from this particular report. However, given the substantial 30% rise in subscribers during the previous earnings call, it seems they are continuing to thrive when it comes to Game Pass sales.
Besides Indiana Jones, blockbusters such as Call of Duty on Game Pass and more recent releases like Forza Horizon 5 on PlayStation 5 are probably driving the final surge in content sales for this quarter at Microsoft.
According to the data presented, a 8% rise in revenue is quite substantial, even if it doesn’t equate to an immediate rocket-like growth. This suggests that the transition from consoles may not have had as negative an impact on sales as some might have anticipated. Keep in mind that Xbox was already experiencing financial losses with each Xbox unit sold.
As a gamer, it seems like Microsoft has been smartly positioning themselves to weather potential market storms by focusing on cloud services, Game Pass, and game production. This approach might be helping them maintain a self-contained gaming environment that’s less dependent on external market fluctuations. On the other hand, Nintendo appears to be gearing up for their own challenges with the upcoming launch of Switch 2 hardware.
With no limitations imposed by hardware, Xbox appears to have greater autonomy over what they offer for sale and how they market it. In essence, they are not just creators of games, but also the proprietors of the platform where these games are distributed and sold, much like Steam.
Furthermore, persistent speculations abound regarding the appearance of a prospective new Xbox console. Some speculation has floated suggestions of an Xbox portable device, while other chatter points towards another large-scale console launch akin to the Series X/S.
To put it candidly, Xbox appears content with its current position. However, the surge in Game Pass subscriptions and reduced competition with PlayStation and Nintendo suggest that these apparently ordinary quarterly sales might actually be a strong sign of what’s to come for Xbox in the future.
