Although Sony lacks a long-standing, official mascot character comparable to Mario (Nintendo) and Sonic the Hedgehog (SEGA, for instance), certain Sony characters have temporarily filled that role over time.

It’s possible that one of the old PlayStation characters may no longer be part of the PlayStation family. This could mean a change in their status or role within the brand.

Until Dawn Movie Shows The PlayStation Productions Intro With One Character Omitted

Radec, who has a keen eye (like an eagle), pointed out that the opening sequence for the Until Dawn film adaptation, produced by PlayStation Productions, no longer includes Sackboy among its characters. The image here is from the Gran Turismo movie’s intro, which was screened in cinemas in 2023.

Despite Sony not announcing any news, the lack of updates suggests that the LittleBigPlanet series may not be getting a new game. So far, Sony hasn’t hinted at the production of another LittleBigPlanet title, and its standalone game from 2020, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, didn’t achieve the level of success some anticipated, with no news about a follow-up yet.

It’s quite plausible that the character is being replaced, given the current popularity of Astro Bot on PlayStation. This platformer has garnered numerous Game of the Year awards and gained a significant amount of praise and success, to the point where even high-level executives at Sony are advocating for additional games in the same vein.

It has been confirmed by Sony that they are working on a movie featuring Astro Bot. If this project comes to fruition, there is a possibility that Sony may designate Astro Bot as their official PlayStation mascot.

It appears that the future of Sackboy and the LittleBigPlanet series may be uncertain, as the most recent release was Sackboy: A Big Adventure on both PS4 and PS5, with no new console releases since then, except for a mobile game titled Ultimate Sackboy in 2023 which we’ll set aside due to obvious reasons.

Should Sackboy reach his final destination, he’ll find himself among other iconic PlayStation characters such as Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, and others, who are currently resting in the safekeeping of PlayStation Studios.
