These Werewolves in Video Games Are So Terrifying You’ll Sleep With the Lights On

Summary

  • Classic werewolves can still induce fear with unique designs and behaviors in video games.
  • Werewolves in games like Bloodborne, Resident Evil 8, and Witch Hunt offer a modern twist on this classic monster.
  • Innovative interpretations of werewolves, such as the Varcolacs, add a fresh and terrifying spin to traditional designs.

In many cases, prolonged exposure to the trope of classic horror creatures such as werewolves has led to a certain level of desensitization, where some people even view them with longing instead of terror, as evidenced by certain segments of the internet.

Fundamentally, werewolves are towering masses of muscle with a wolf’s face, inherently possessing an overwhelming physical presence. However, some game developers have skillfully reintroduced dread into these creatures, crafting terrifying beast-themed games that genuinely evoke fear. These werewolves, either through their appearance or behavior, deserve their classic status.

8. The Beast – Witch Hunt

Call Of The Wild Meets Bloodborne

Release Date September 3, 2018
ESRB N/A
Developer Gua
Genre Survival Horror

Gua’s game titled “Witch Hunt” blends elements of hunting simulations and gothic horror. In this adventure, players pursue legendary dark beasts lurking in the forests surrounding the 18th-century town of Bellville. Instead of being guided, players must independently decipher the habits and hiding spots of monstrous creatures that vary from zombies to werewolves.

In this game, one of the early hunts, known simply as “The Beast,” is essentially a werewolf in all but name, embodying the traditional terrifying design that horror enthusiasts are familiar with. What makes The Beast particularly frightening is its stealthy, hit-and-run approach. As players chase this monster, they’ll catch brief glimpses of it darting through the foliage before seemingly appearing out of nowhere to attack them. Its elusiveness and the player’s inability to maintain constant vigilance make The Beast a relentless source of jump scares.

7. The Wolfman – Fear The Moon

Werewolf Survival Horror

Release Date May 7, 2024

Developer Jonny’s Games
Genre Survival Horror

In my perspective as an enthusiast, Jonny’s Games’ “Fear the Moon” cleverly reimagines the werewolf, plunging players into a chilling survival horror atmosphere. I, for one, become Jane in this gripping tale, where a seemingly innocent camping trip takes a horrifying turn, leading me to be stranded within the terrifying domain of the infamous Wolfman.

As I tread through the dense, eerie forest or creep along the narrow, dimly lit hallways, I can feel the chilling presence of the monstrous Wolfman hot on my heels. The puzzles and tool scavenging keep me engaged, but it’s the relentless pursuit by this towering werewolf that sends my heart racing. The confining corridors only heighten the terror, as I struggle to find a way out, knowing that every second could be my last.

6. Lycans – The Order: 1886

Werewolf Infested London

In the game titled “The Order 1886“, players find themselves in a London-like setting overrun by monstrous creatures resembling werewolves. As part of the Knights of the Round Table, an organization dedicated to shielding humanity from supernatural perils, you’ll encounter these Lycans on multiple occasions throughout your journey.

In two distinct forms: simpler, conventionally-appearing troops and the intellectually superior Eldars with a bipedal structure, it is the Eldars that appear most menacing. Despite sharing some physical resemblance to humans, their humanoid features serve only to enhance an eerie and unsettling impression.

5. Werewolf – Nightmare Creatures

Emaciated Beasts

In Kalisto’s renowned horror action game, Nightmare Creatures, the werewolves bear an eerie resemblance to distorted versions of Wile E Coyote. They are tall and lanky, with eyes that seem deranged, and their rib cages are almost visible – making Nightmare Creatures one of the pioneers, if not the first, video games to create a werewolf design that is genuinely chilling.

Despite facing the werewolf as a recurring foe several times, its gaunt appearance remains striking and impactful throughout the entire gameplay experience.

4. Scourge Beast – Bloodborne

Deadly Soulsborne Enemies

In the vein of a contemporary revival, FromSoftware’s acclaimed title, Bloodborne, immerses players within the Victorian-era city of Yharnam as it grapples with the beast plague, a malady transforming its residents into grotesque, terrifying entities.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the heavy gothic influence that permeates through every corner of Bloodborne. This is particularly evident when encountering Scourge Beasts, werewolf-like creatures that are omnipresent yet always unsettling. With their gangly limbs and glowing eyes, they’re a chilling interpretation of our fearsome folklore werewolves. These beasts aren’t just common; they’re an ever-present reminder of the game’s dark undertones. And let’s not forget about the bosses – many of them share similar designs with these Scourge Beasts, like Vicar Amelia and the Blood Starved Beast, adding another layer of fear to this already terrifying world.

3. Griffith Park Werewolf – Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

Terrifying Werewolf Chase

In “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines,” players are whisked away to a shadowy Los Angeles dominated by a hidden realm of monsters. Although the game primarily focuses on vampires, as the name implies, it also includes a variety of lycanthropes, or werewolves.

In the world of Bloodlines, the werewolves may seem ordinary based on their description alone, given they largely adhere to conventional werewolf characteristics such as immense size. However, much like other creatures on this list, the fear factor in Bloodlines lies in the specific circumstances and context. Encountering a werewolf for the first time in Griffith Park presents an intimidating figure of unbreakable muscle that appears invulnerable, leaving players with only one choice: flee. Regardless of its design, a monster like the werewolf from Bloodlines chasing the player is undoubtedly terrifying. To make matters worse, in certain situations, this werewolf can break through walls, a trait not commonly seen until that point in the game, further heightening the sense of dread.

2. Werewolves – The Quarry

A Modern Iteration Of The Werewolf

In The Quarry, players remain uncertain about who or what is pursuing them for a while. Once the creatures are unveiled, it’s understandable if players confuse them with the monstrous adversaries from Supermassive’s other games, specifically the Wendigos from Until Dawn.

In the game “The Quarry,” the monsters don’t initially resemble werewolves due to their humanoid structure and subtly wolfish features. This unique portrayal of the monster has sparked debate among fans, with some praising its originality and others believing it strays too far from traditional depictions. Despite differing opinions on the design, the werewolves remain a formidable and terrifying danger throughout the game.

1. Varcolac – Resident Evil 8

Uncanny Monstrosities

In Resident Evil Village, the decision to draw inspiration from gothic horror and European folklore resulted in the development of contemporary takes on traditional monsters. For instance, you’d find vampires that ranged from shuffling corpses to colossal creatures akin to kaiju. Predominantly among this lineup are werewolves, also known as Lycans, whose typical forms share similarities with zombies that have undergone extreme muscle development.

In the world of Resident Evil, even the fearsome Lycans caused a disruption from the usual run-of-the-mill enemies. However, Capcom pushed the boundaries further by introducing the Varcolac. Unlike traditional four-legged monstrous creatures with wolf-like heads, these terrifying beings have elongated human jaws. These chilling aberrations are nightmares come to life. Evolved from the human-hybrid werewolf designs that have gained popularity in media, Varcolacs are arguably the most distinct werewolves encountered thus far by players.
