Currently, Gamescom LATAM is happening. This marks the second annual event for the South American version of the industry’s largest convention, which has grown significantly over the years. For four days, São Paulo, Brazil hosts this festival, attracting a record-breaking number of attendees. Last year alone saw over 330,000 people in attendance at the inaugural event. Gamescom LATAM 2025 is now recognized as a significant gathering that connects up-and-coming indie developers and local players with well-known publishers and other influential entities within the gaming community.
At this year’s exhibition, Game Rant had a conversation with Gustavo Steinberg, CEO of Gamescom LATAM, about the event’s influence and significance in the broader industry. Steinberg emphasized that Latin America is undergoing a transformation in the gaming market, pointing out how it has emerged as an attractive region for both independent developers to present their ventures and for global game publishers and investors to discover fresh talent.
Gamescom LATAM CEO Gustavo Steinberg on Latin America’s Place Within the Video Game Market
The Latin American Gaming Market’s Unique Position
Regarding the question about why he finds the Latin American market significant and unique, Steinberg shared his perspective.
Or, more concisely: Steinberg spoke about his views on why the Latin American market is crucial and distinctive.
1: The current number of video game players we have exceeds the North American gaming market, with approximately 350 million players worldwide compared to around 280 million in North America. However, it’s important to note that purchasing power in North America is significantly higher due to economic reasons. Despite this, it seems that both Europe and North America are nearing saturation, leading us to wonder where the next growth market lies. Given some restrictions in Asia, it appears that this region could be a logical choice for expansion.
In his further comments, Steinberg expressed the belief that “studios and publishers are starting to understand that we share many aspects of Western culture, despite not being categorized as such. Although our perspectives might be unique or slightly different, this diversity is crucial for developing innovative games that will captivate audiences.
As a gamer, I can’t help but notice the vast opportunities for creativity in Latin America, especially considering its strategic location between European and American time zones. This makes collaboration and communication with game developers from both regions seamless. Additionally, the region offers a favorable exchange rate that could be beneficial to game development projects.
What’s truly inspiring is the passion I’ve encountered among the local professionals here. They are driven, eager, and hungry for success. The growth of the gaming industry in this region can be compared to a snowball rolling downhill, gaining momentum as it goes. Last year alone, there were at least two or three games showcased at the ID@Xbox booth that originated from here. This is just a snapshot of what’s been happening and it’s clear that the gaming industry in Latin America will only continue to thrive more and more.
Gamescom LATAM Offers Local Developers and Global Publishers and Investors the Perfect Way to Connect
At Gamescom LATAM, well-known companies such as Steam, Bethesda, Nintendo, and numerous others attend, providing ample chances for local developers to network with them. As Steinberg put it:
“There are numerous beneficial connections to be made at Gamescom LATAM for regional developers.
In this region, there aren’t many large publishing companies. However, I believe it’s a mutually beneficial opportunity for publishers to tap into the local talent pool, while allowing that talent to benefit from partnerships with publishers and foreign investors. To put it plainly, I often advise professionals and investors, “If you don’t show up, you’re missing out on potential profits.” It’s straightforward.
Steinberg concluded by emphasizing, “It’s crucial to recognize that the developers you encounter here are unlike those found elsewhere globally. They tend not to be present because it’s too costly for them, but instead, more and more foreigners are arriving. Therefore, if you haven’t experienced it yet, you should.” With Gamescom LATAM offering a platform for prosperous collaborations and commercial opportunities, the future looks promising for this event and Latin America’s role within the global gaming industry.
