LEGO Spiny Shell Set Leak: Mario Kart Power-Up Coming in 2025?

Summary

  • A possible LEGO set modeled after the Spiny Shell from the Mario Kart series may be released in the coming months.
  • The iconic Spiny Shell is an offensive power-up from Mario Kart that seeks out the racer in first place.
  • The leaked LEGO set image of the Spiny Shell might be fake, but it aligns with LEGO’s Mario Kart releases this year.

It looks like another potential LEGO set inspired by the popular game “Mario Kart” may have surfaced, this time featuring the legendary Spiny Shell item as its theme. For several years, Nintendo and LEGO have been collaborating to create building sets from Nintendo’s well-known franchises, with some of them drawing inspiration from the “Mario Kart” series. Previously, models of Donkey Kong’s DK Jumbo Kart and Toad’s Garage have been made in LEGO form, and earlier this year, LEGO announced a large-scale “Mario Kart” set centered around Mario himself.

2025 will see a multitude of LEGO Mario Kart sets being unveiled, with the announcement this month of a new lineup from Nintendo. These kits include models based on characters, vehicles, and settings from the popular game Mario Kart. From August 1st onwards, collectors can expand their LEGO garage with Mario’s classic red go-kart, Wario’s purple muscle car, and King Boo’s Teddy Buggy, as well as traverse Bowser’s fiery castle in a race of their own.

Based on a recent leak from Insider Gaming, it appears that a popular title within the Mario Kart franchise could soon have its own LEGO set. This information was hinted at through a tweet by Brick Built Blogs, which shared a blurry image of what seems to be box art for a Blue Shell power-up inspired set. If accurate, this leak suggests that the set will be called “Spiny Shell,” comprising 234 pieces and slated for release as an exclusive Insider Reward in May 2025.

LEGO Mario Kart Blue Shell Set Could Be Coming Soon

As a dedicated Mario Kart enthusiast, I’ve always had a special connection with the infamous “Spiny Shell,” officially known as the Blue Shell. This game-changing power-up made its debut in the original Mario Kart 64, and since then, it has left an indelible mark on the Mario Kart series.

With its distinctive spikes adorning its back and sometimes equipped with wings for added agility, this menacing item targets the racer in First Place. It deftly navigates any obstacles that cross its path, and when it finally catches up to its target, it detonates in a massive explosion. For the leader of the race, the ominous sound of the Spiny Shell approaching fills us with dread, as our options for evasion are limited, save for a swiftly timed power-up or a dash of pure luck.

The recently surfaced picture of the LEGO Spiny Shell could potentially be a fake, given that the supposed image of the box art appears to be quite pixelated. Nevertheless, with LEGO introducing more sets based on the Mario Kart theme this year, it might just be an opportune moment for one modeled after the franchise’s most iconic offensive item. In the meantime, the Spiny Shell is set to make its dramatic comeback in Mario Kart World, which will launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2.
