Tetris Creator’s New ‘Action App’ Aims to Save the World

In the 1990s, Henk Rogers solidified his role as a key figure in the video game industry by brokering a deal to distribute Tetris to Nintendo. Since then, this franchise has grown into one of the cornerstones of the industry. Alongside others, Rogers co-founded The Tetris Company, leveraging the game’s success and continually finding new and creative ways to develop it further. This inventiveness continues unabated, with Rogers brimming with fresh concepts for future projects.

At Gamescom LATAM, Game Rant spoke with Rogers about his activities following the release of his latest book, “The Perfect Game“. This book chronicles Rogers’ challenging quest to transform “Tetris” into a worldwide phenomenon. As per Rogers, this account is significantly more historically precise than the film, which was inspired by similar events. Now, he’s focusing on an innovative new venture titled the Action App.

Henk Rogers Discusses Exciting Future Plans

Despite his already illustrious career spanning numerous years, Rogers continues to demonstrate unflagging energy with multiple projects underway, one of which is the Action App. Rogers refers to this project as a real-life role-playing game, and its potential global impact could be transformative, to say the least. In his own words, he described it thus:

Rather than engaging with it in a digital environment, you participate in it within the physical world. We provide you with a list of tasks aimed at improving our reality. Initially, these tasks are quite modest – like picking up litter, turning off unused lights, and so on. As you complete more of these smaller tasks, we’ll present you with larger challenges to tackle.

The Action App Could Yield Some Amazing Global Benefits

You can earn points in several ways, either by taking an action yourself, or by initiating an action that others also perform, thereby earning points as well. Rogers added that AI will initially assess whether this practice is beneficial for our planet. As for the rewards for advancing in levels, Rogers clarified…

For concerts, or similar events, I propose a system where each tier of attendees gets to purchase tickets on different days. For instance, level 7 ticket holders can buy their tickets on Monday, level 6 on Tuesday, level 5 on Wednesday, and so forth. Essentially, this means that those at higher levels will have priority seating closer to the stage or front. We would categorize attendees based on their tier, creating a competition of sorts where people try to move up the tiers to get better seats at events. This concept could also be applied to sports events.

It’s evident that Rogers harbors grand ambitions for the Action App, and it’s not hard to imagine gamers getting thrilled by some of his demonstrations. The idea of contributing to global betterment alongside the perks associated with conventional RPG leveling is a fresh, innovative approach. If Rogers and his team successfully execute their vision, the Action App could have a similar worldwide impact as Tetris had on video games.
