My Hero Academia: Best Harmless Quirks, Ranked

In a universe where some possess the ability to destroy structures with a mere gesture or transform metal with their exhale, it’s effortless to overlook the fact that not every Quirk in My Hero Academia was designed for battlefield supremacy. Some are unassuming, peculiar, or even seemingly worthless in combat scenarios, but this doesn’t make them any less intriguing.

In the realm of Pro Heroes, Harmless Quirks stand out as a peculiar group. Unlike their counterparts who can trigger explosions or summon storms, they seldom terrify villains. However, where they lack raw power, they often compensate with uniqueness, practical uses, or even a dash of humor. In fact, these Quirks frequently reflect the creativity within the show’s universe more than any spectacular attack ever could. Here are seven examples of Harmless Quirks from My Hero Academia:

1. Microcosmos – Allowing its user to see and manipulate microscopic organisms.
2. Invisibility – Enabling its user to become completely invisible, but only when they aren’t moving.
3. Predictive Ability – Giving its user the ability to predict the actions of others based on their physical movements.
4. Razor – Empowering its user with the ability to grow razor-sharp blades from any part of their body.
5. Float – Grants its user the power of flight, but only for short periods and at low altitudes.
6. Stretchy – Allows its user to stretch their limbs to incredible lengths, but not to change their shape.
7. Copycat – Enables its user to mimic any Quirk they have come into physical contact with.

7.
Inko Midoriya

Unnamed Object Attraction Quirk

Inko Midoriya’s Quirk doesn’t scream power, it whispers convenience.

Her unique talent enables her to draw small items towards herself, though its specific title remains unidentified, it’s often called an “Attraction Oddity.” When we initially observe her using it, she’s moving a cup across the room, a seemingly ordinary action that could easily go unnoticed.

However, what gives this Quirk an endearing quality is its innocuous nature. It lacks any harmful intent, has no military application, and cannot cause massive damage. Instead, it’s a trait you’d appreciate in everyday life – like tidying up without getting up, or grabbing the remote control from afar.

And yet, this small, gentle Quirk birthed a son who would go on to inherit One For All.

6.
Shino Sosaki

Telepath

Shino Sosaki, often referred to as “Mandalay of the Wild, Wild Pussycats,” has a unique ability known as Telepathy. This talent enables her to convey thoughts straight into other people’s minds, bypassing the need for communication devices or loud vocalizations, even when physical distance is involved.

In a realm of superheroes, where communication is crucial for survival, this peculiarity stands out as incredibly precious because it only transmits information, with no capacity to inflict damage, cause discomfort, or demolish anything.

It’s intriguing to note that Telepath doesn’t function as a two-way connection. Instead, it operates as a one-way channel – she can transmit thoughts but not receive them. In essence, this restriction makes her power less threatening since she isn’t invading minds or controlling thoughts. Essentially, she’s just communicating, clearly and softly, amidst the tumult of conflict.

In the heart-pounding events of Season 3’s Vanguard Action Squad invasion, I witnessed her remarkable ability to orchestrate both students and heroes seamlessly, even in the midst of a surprise attack in the dense forest.

5.
Mirio Togata

Permeation

Upon initial observation, Mirio Togata’s ability, Permeation, seems anything but innocuous. This unique power enables him to pass through solid objects, enabling him to walk through walls, dodge attacks, and even burrow into the earth.

Permeation doesn’t cause harm due to its actions, but rather due to what it omits. It neither allows him to strike harder, ignite foes, nor paralyze anyone. Instead, he becomes utterly immaterial during this process. He can’t inhale or perceive while phasing, and his clothes are shed because they’re external to his body upon full activation.

Using it was always a complex and difficult task, which is why most people viewed Mirio as a failure for much of his life. However, he eventually learned to turn that challenge into an asset.

He wasn’t able to endure battles merely due to Permeation’s strength; rather, it was because he possessed exceptional skills. The peculiarity didn’t elevate him to the top tier at U.A.’s Big Three, but his relentless pursuit of precision, timing, and raw physical prowess did. It took numerous unsuccessful trials, injuries, and training periods for him to finally grasp its intricacies.

So yes, Permeation looks strong in his hands, but it’s not the Quirk that’s powerful.

4.
Shota Aizawa

Erasure

From a fan’s perspective, my take is that Aizawa’s Quirk, Erasure, sparks quite a heated discussion among us. To be honest, I find it hard to see how a power that could instantly neutralize another’s Quirk can truly be considered harmless.

In reality, erasure doesn’t inflict any harm. It doesn’t cause paralysis in your limbs, scorch your skin, or knock you to the ground. Instead, it merely strips you of your abilities – a temporary incapacity that only lasts while Aizawa maintains his unwavering gaze.

Additionally, it’s important to note that this ability also has its limitations. For instance, if someone like Tsuyu or Shoji possesses a mutant-type Quirk, their physical attributes remain unaltered. This means Aizawa cannot erase wings or tails; his Quirk is solely focused on suppression rather than destruction.

Essentially, it serves as a preventive measure rather than an offensive tool. For individuals such as Aizawa, it transforms into a precision instrument, acting as a preemptive tactic that restores balance in conflict situations.

However, minus his strategic acumen, his exceptional scarf play, and the awe-inspiring intensity of his gaze, Erasure appears to be nothing more than innocuous. In an instant, it can vanish without a trace.

3.
Emi Fukukado

Outburst

Miss Joke’s peculiarity is named “Outburst,” which essentially means she induces intense, uncontrollable laughter in others.

They don’t feel pain, lose consciousness, or get a bruise from it. Yet, when used at the right time, it has the power to render someone defenseless.

During the Provisional License Exams, Emi Fukukado playfully teased Aizawa, giving off a humorous impression. However, let me clarify that Emi Fukukado is indeed a proficient Pro Hero. Her Quirk, though it may appear as a joke, is impressively smart when put into action.

When uncontrollable laughter takes over, it becomes challenging to focus, aim, or even take a proper breath. It seems innocent enough, but on a psychological level, it creates disruptions.

Outburst has a unique charm – it acts like an explosive source of joy rather than anger or fright.

2.
Tatami Nakagame

Telescopic

Nataka Nakagame’s special ability, Telescopic, allows her to shrink and hide her entire body, including limbs, much like a retracting turtle. She can coil herself up for protection or maneuverability.

It’s one of the quirks that caused fans to go, “Wait… that’s it?”

And yes, that is it.

She lacks the ability to inflict harm, has no energy attacks, and cannot manipulate elements. At most, she can squeeze into confined spaces or dodge potential damage. It’s beneficial for evading threats or concealing herself, but in a direct confrontation, Telescopic doesn’t provide an advantage.

Even so, her enrollment in U.A.’s hero academy suggests a great deal about her potential. It’s possible that the faculty recognized qualities such as her swift problem-solving skills, or perhaps her ability to innovatively apply her Quirk in survival situations, which they deemed worthy of further training.

1.
Mei Hatsume

Zoom

Mei Hatsume is not combat-oriented; instead, she’s an engineer. Her unique ability, Zoom, enables her to magnify her sight up to a distance of approximately five kilometers.

She lacks the abilities to shape metal, fly, or move objects mentally. However, she possesses a unique sight that enables her to perceive things that are invisible to most people.

As a gamer in the world of My Hero Academia, I’m not like most heroes who rely on brute strength to define my ability. Instead, I, Mei, set myself apart with my harmless Quirk, which I use to invent crucial support equipment that other heroes depend on. These aren’t mere playthings; they’re lifesaving gear. From mobility boosters to battle armor, I craft the essential tools that seamlessly blend the power of Quirks with tactical strategy.

It’s not her Zoom that makes her formidable. It’s her mind.

She turned a simple visual enhancement into a career that supports the entire pro hero system.
