Summary
- Borderlands 4 price remains unknown
- Gearbox CEO unaware of pricing plans for game
- Game budget doubled, causing speculation on price rise
In light of 2K Games announcing yesterday that Mafia: The Old Country won’t carry the usual $70 price tag for AAA games, some may be curious to know whether this pricing adjustment will extend to their other titles as well.
Is it possible that the price of Borderlands 4, another significant title from 2K Games this year, might be lower as well? At this point, even Gearbox themselves are unsure about this detail.
Borderlands 4 Price Still A Mystery

Although Borderlands 4 is scheduled for release in September, even the head of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford, remains unsure about the game’s cost. During PAX East, he was asked directly about this issue (through GameSpot).
“I’ll tell you the truth, I don’t know….That is the truth,” Pitchford shared.
Pitchford commented, “We’re in an intriguing phase. On one side, we have a cutthroat market where sellers aim to shift as many items as possible while being mindful of price-conscious buyers. This means some people are hesitant about increasing prices, even those determining the prices themselves. However, there are others who acknowledge that production costs and packaging tariffs are rising, making things complicated.” In simpler terms, it’s a tricky situation out there.
For Pitchford, the reasoning behind the price is ensuring everyone perceives it as a fair value. “We’re about to announce a price. It could follow the lead of the new prices set by Nintendo and Microsoft. Alternatively, we might hold back. Ultimately, it will be our publishing team who decides. We’ll find out soon. I believe it will turn out well, regardless of the [price]. It’s worth whatever it ends up being.
Concerning the budget for the next game in the series, Pitchford stated that Borderlands 4 has a budget “significantly larger” than Borderlands 3. Therefore, it seems likely that Borderlands 4 will retail at around $70. I hope the price doesn’t go as high as $80, because I believe many gamers would find that price point less appealing.
A little over three weeks ago, it was announced that the launch date for Borderlands 4 had been brought forward earlier than expected. This change in date initially led many to believe that it might be connected to the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. However, we now know this isn’t true as GTA 6 has officially been scheduled for May 2026. In contrast, Borderlands 4 is set to debut on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.
Hopefully, this pricing conversation isn’t something we’ll need to ask for every game.
