However, since the Heian Era, the Demon Slayer Corps has lost many valiant warriors in their mission to prevent Muzan’s ambitious schemes from materializing.
For more than a millennium, brave individuals known as demon slayers have stood as a protective barrier for humanity against supernatural threats. Over the years, numerous warriors have dedicated their lives to this organization, displaying immense courage. However, only a select few among them were able to ascend to an elite level, confronting and challenging the most formidable demons in existence.
8. Tanjiro Kamado
The Demon Slayer Who Surpassed Many Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 1
- Anime Debut: Episode 1
Tanjiro suffered at the hands of Muzan’s reckless cruelty and brutality, prompting him to swear vengeance against the Demon King. With unyielding determination and commitment, he found a place in the Demon Slayer Corps. He first excelled in Water Breathing but eventually unlocked the powerful Sun Breathing technique, making him one of the formidable fighters of his time.
To bring peace to the souls I’ve slain, and prevent any more casualties, I shall ruthlessly behead any demon I encounter. However, I will not judge harshly those who are remorseful for their actions and tormented by their past as demons. This is because demons were once human, and in essence, they were like me.
Through the activation of the Demon Slayer Mark, Tanjiro significantly altered the Demon Slayer Corps, setting the stage for battles against top-tier demons. Besides Yoriichi, Tanjiro might be the sole individual who masterfully combined Sun Breathing and the demon slayer mark. Although he never held the title of Hashira officially, by the conclusion of the human-demon war, Tanjiro had outmatched several formidable combatants of his generation.

Serpent Hashira

Iguro is proficient in the Serpent Breathing style, a distinctive swordsmanship technique that he himself developed.
6. Giyu Tomioka
Water Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 1
- Anime Debut: Episode 1
Contrary to other Hashira who boast high levels of self-assurance due to their mastery over fighting techniques, Giyu differs markedly. He grapples with self-doubt and feels out of place among the top-tier swordsmen of his era. However, despite his wavering confidence, Giyu is an exceptionally proficient warrior who beheads Lower Rank Five Rui in a single blow during the Mount Natagumo arc.
Giyu Tomioka demonstrates exceptional proficiency in the Water Breathing technique, consistently outperforming every other Demon Slayer when it comes to its skillful execution.

Mist Hashira

Afterward, he personally vanquished Upper-Rank Five, Gyokko, and engaged in battles against some of the deadliest demons known. It’s no wonder he is considered one of the most exceptional demon slayers in history.
4. Sanemi Shinazugawa
Wind Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 45
- Anime Debut: Episode 22
Sanemi Shinazugawa endured a challenging upbringing marked by loss and hardship. With his abusive father’s departure, he assumed the role of guardian for his siblings. As fate unfolded, he was compelled to take his mother’s life under difficult circumstances. These harrowing experiences shaped him profoundly, but he channeled his emotional turmoil into personal growth and emerged as one of the most formidable demon slayers in his era.
I know how unfair the world is… because good people… die one after another.
Sanemi excelled in Wind Breathing techniques, making him an exceptionally formidable warrior that even the most fearsome demons admired and lauded. This wasn’t his only unique trait; he was born with Marechi blood, a rare type that has a disorienting effect on demons. Shinazugawa, on the other hand, possessed an extraordinary ability to control his own bleeding – a skill that enabled him to continue fighting even when critically injured, far beyond what others thought possible. As such, Sanemi was a formidable adversary for anyone he engaged in combat with, as he seemed almost impossible to defeat due to his relentless determination and resilience.

Yoriichi’s Brother
- Manga Debut: Chapter 99

Unfortunately, this resentment persisted within him, even though he was aware that Yoriichi cherished him deeply.
Michikatsu Tsugikuni held the belief that his generation of demon slayers surpassed others, as they seemed to be the last bearing the various breathing techniques that were prevalent during their time. Similar to other slayers of his era, Michikatsu too experienced the awakening of the demon slayer mark. Notably, he was the one who devised the Moon Breathing technique and honed it to its peak with unwavering work and commitment. Given that it is a direct descendant of Sun Breathing, it proves to be exceptionally potent in battle.
2. Gyomei Himejima
Stone Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 44
- Anime Debut: Episode 21
Throughout his lifetime, Gyomei Himejima experienced loss in various forms. His mother perished during childbirth, and his father succumbed to an epidemic. At one point in his life, he even cared for orphans within his temple. Unfortunately, some of the children he cherished were taken by a demon attack, and he was unjustly imprisoned afterward.
We take pride in being human, but please refrain from thinking that your thoughts are superior and imposing them on others without regard.
In my most challenging moments, I was granted a lifeline by Kagaya Ubuyashiki. This act of kindness transformed me into one of the most esteemed Hashira of my era. My combat skills captivated the attention of not just any ordinary observer, but even Muzan and Kokushibo themselves. In fact, Kokushibo, a formidable demon in his own right, confided that I might have been the strongest slayer he had encountered in the past few centuries.
Gyomei, though blind, possessed an unparalleled ability to perceive the world around him. His heightened senses enabled him to engage some of the strongest demons on an even playing field.
