Regardless if you’re using one of the popular mods for unleveling or auto-upgrading rewards in Oblivion Remastered, you might still crave an item with a bit more power at the start. For that, Umbra is the solution for you.
In the rich tapestry of Elder Scrolls lore, this ominous, deeply malevolent longsword stands as a notable artifact. It plays a crucial role in the level-20 Daedric quest related to Clavicus Vile. However, both the sword and its namesake character continue to manifest within the game world, even if the specific quest hasn’t been initiated by the player.
She is located at the Ayleid ruins known as Vindasel, which is not far from the Imperial City. Unlike most characters and items in Oblivion, Umbra and her sword maintain their maximum power without any level-based adjustments. It’s rewarding to discover such an enduring loot.
It’s important to note that Umbra, being an unleveled character, adds a layer of complexity to the act of looting her belongings, as it’s not straightforward. However, she can be effectively neutralized using clever gaming tactics. A strategic position atop the crumbling pillar in her chamber provides an excellent vantage point for launching magic or arrows at her. Interestingly, she will persistently charge towards you, often colliding with the pillar, lacking any long-range counterattack abilities of her own.
During my adventure through this captivating world, I happened upon Vindasel quite by chance, my memory momentarily failing me regarding which Ayleid ruins were linked to specific quest lines. Often, I find myself unwittingly entering caves and fortresses on my journey between cities, only later realizing they’re associated with quests I haven’t yet embarked upon.
At level 12, I managed to whittle her down using Destruction magic and snacking on Welkynd stones for mana restoration. I probably consumed over 20 of them to survive the challenging Expert difficulty in Oblivion Remastered, not to mention the added challenge provided by IxiosVII’s exceptional difficulty mod.
In the game world, this blade is considered a “quest item” by Oblivion, meaning it doesn’t add to my carry weight – quite handy! However, I should eventually wrap up the quest associated with it since it leads to Hermaeus Mora’s daedric quest. That one needs you to complete tasks for all other daedra princes first. But hey, I get to keep this cool sword and give Clavicus a cold shoulder in the process! Just remember, it’ll be a bit of a burden carrying it around since it’s not exactly lightweight.
Umbra is an exceptional weapon – it’s incredibly stylish and boasts the highest base damage among most weapons in the game, with only a handful of leveled weapons from Shivering Isles potentially outperforming it. To top it off, it’s also a swift one-handed sword for both aggressive fighters and subtle nightblades, making it versatile and suitable for various playstyles.
Umbra possesses an enduring soul capture charm that allows filling Soul Gems to rejuvenate magical artifacts – my preferred combination is using Umbra alongside the ultimate fire sword, Goldbrand. Goldbrand inflicts substantial fire damage on monsters, while its base damage is almost equal to Umbra’s.
It’s enjoyable to alternate between the two, enhancing Goldbrand with gems imbued by Umbra. However, Goldbrand restricts access to Boethia’s daedric quest unless your character is at least level 20, whereas Umbra becomes accessible immediately upon exiting the Imperial City sewers.
