Oblivion Remastered: Unbelievable Beauty of Cyrodiil’s Most Iconic Locations

Summary

  • Oblivion’s new remastered version looks just as stunning as the original did back in 2006.
  • Using Unreal Engine 5, the remaster has new features, like DLSS and real-time lighting, which make the game look gorgeous in many areas.
  • From Frostcrag Spire in the mountains, to Anvil on the coast, the remaster brings new life to locations all across Cyrodiil.

As a hardcore gamer, let me tell you, the sudden unveiling of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered felt like a dream come true, especially for series enthusiasts like myself. Not surprisingly, this remastered gem skyrocketed to popularity during its debut week, making it one of the most-played games on Steam, with more than 200,000 players on PCs alone!

Similarly to how it did back in 2006, this updated version showcases breathtaking graphics due to its integration with Unreal Engine 5, revitalizing the game. It’s also worth mentioning that many of Cyrodiil’s most recognized and awe-inspiring locations now look simply stunning.

8. Imperial Prison Sewers

First Impressions Just As Great As They Were Back In 2006

Instead of starting in such an unusual place, given its identity as a prison and all, within the vast Imperial City, one might think the Imperial Prison Sewers would be unappealing. However, this seemingly mundane location serves as an impressive platform to display the enhanced graphical elements of the remaster, making it an effective introduction.

In its dimly lit passages, adorned with torches and allowing mere glimpses of daylight through scattered vents overhead, the game’s visuals are undeniably impressive. This initial impact on players in the latest remaster mirrors the powerful first impression it made way back in 2006.

7. Chorrol

The Colovian City

Nestled in the north-western region of Cyrodiil’s Great Forest lies my beloved city, Chorrol – a Colovian gem situated close to the border with Hammerfell. Beyond its protective walls, you’ll find Weynon Priory, a significant location that played a pivotal role in my adventures during the game’s main quest.

Inside, you’ll find an array of distinct shops, services, and guilds nestled within. Notably, these guilds encircle the city’s iconic landmark, The Great Oak. This architectural marvel, combined with the city’s distinctive style, offers a breathtaking spectacle, particularly when the colossal oak’s shade sweeps across the square on a bright day. Such a scene truly showcases the mastery of Unreal Engine 5 in this remastered version.

6. Imperial City Waterfront

The Capital’s Sprawling Port

The Imperial City, serving as the capital of Cyrodiil, is segmented into various zones, ranging from the lively Market District to the tranquil Arboretum. However, among all these areas, the Waterfront stands out for its captivating beauty.

Located in the southwest corner of the city, you’ll find the waterfront bustling with an assortment of vessels, travelers, and a breathtaking panorama of Lake Rumare that encircles our grand island-ensconced metropolis. And let me add, it’s also where the first quest of a particular questionable guild is said to have originated.

5. Frostcrag Spire

A Mage’s Dream Home

Frostcrag Spire, nestled within the eastern mountains near Bruma, offers one of the residential options for players in the realm of Oblivion. This towering, imposing structure appears to cater particularly to characters with a focus on magical abilities.

The Frostcrag Spire consists of three primary sections, each housing entranceways to all Cyrodiil’s Mages Guild outposts. It boasts an extensive alchemy garden stocked with a variety of ingredients and numerous opportunities for upgrades. With everything a mage could desire, the Frostcrag Spire remains visually striking in the remaster, featuring its icy motif and subtle blue illumination. From its uppermost vantage point, it offers a breathtaking panorama across the province, highlighting the enhanced map in all its remastered splendor.

4. Castle Skingrad

Located Within Cyrodiil’s Wine Region

Nestled on the border between Valenwood and Elsweyr’s southern territories lies the elegant city of Skingrad, renowned for its lush vineyards and exquisite wines. The enchanting West Weald region serves as a backdrop, with Skingrad being the principal settlement within it.

Boasting typical amenities and guilds, the city is adorned with an exceptionally crafted castle, Castle Skingrad, which stands out distinctively. Isolated from the urban sprawl by an impressive bridge, the approach to this castle offers a panoramic vista of the valley below, culminating in its courtyard and interior spaces that mirror the city’s refined design. Just southeast of the city, you’ll find The Priory of the Nine, a significant location in the Knights of the Nine DLC for Oblivion, and a formidable armor set as well.

3. Mania

A Brighter Side Of The Shivering Isles

The Shivering Isles, infamously recognized as The Realm of Madness, is an Oblivion plane governed by the malevolent Daedric Prince, Sheogorath. This realm is split into two primary areas: the somber south region called Dementia, and the more illuminated north area known as Mania.

The second one is equally captivating and distinct. Its peculiar ambiance, teeming with luxuriant, overgrown flora and fungi, carries an unsettling allure in certain aspects, yet remains intriguingly fascinating to traverse. Its colossal mushrooms bear a striking resemblance to the setting found in the province of Morrowind.

But remember, despite its appealing hues and scenery, this is, in fact, the realm of Oblivion.

2. Anvil

A Beautiful Port-City Along The Gold Coast

Nestled along the stunning Gold Coast, towards the southwest of Cyrodiil, you’ll find the bustling city of Anvil. Situated right on the Abbeycoast Sea, this vibrant seaport town is renowned throughout the province for its thriving harbor.

As a devoted admirer, let me express that Anvil may be smaller than other towns in Oblivion, yet it manages to house all the necessary guild halls and services within its central district. However, what truly sets Anvil apart is its breathtaking harbor. Brimming with an array of ships and traveling merchants, it offers a panoramic view of the vast Abecean Sea, with the city’s lighthouse standing majestically in the background, adding the perfect finishing touch to this scenic marvel.

Although the Anvil Docks are quite lively, they offer a surprisingly tranquil space for strolling around, or even admiring Astia’s depiction of the Anvil Lighthouse – a charming touch that has been preserved in the updated version.

1. Gaiar Alata

“Paradise”

At first sight, Gaiar Alata, often called “Paradise,” appears perfectly suited with its stunning bright climate, thriving greenery, and vibrant flowers everywhere. However, much like the Shivering Isles, players soon discover that this “Paradise” is just another realm of Oblivion.

In this game, you’ll encounter a place crafted by Mankar Camoran, head of a Daedra-adoring cult called the Mythic Dawn, multiple times during the main storyline. Despite its ominous setting, it was arguably one of the most stunning locations in Oblivion, released in 2006. Even now, in this revamped version, it continues to leave us breathless with its breathtaking visuals.
