The Doom Timeline Revealed: How the Slayer Became the Ultimate Demons Slayer

Summary

  • The Doom games have a connected timeline spanning several installments, with the protagonist evolving from Doom Guy to the Doom Slayer.
  • Doom 3 exists in an alternate timeline, and mods like Sigil and The Plutonia Experiment are not part of the official canon.
  • In Doom: The Dark Ages, the Doom Slayer faces the Maykrs’ first betrayal, but with the help of Thira, defeats the Kreed Maykr and saves her soul.

It’s not hard to see the Doom series as merely a collection of violent shooting with awesome metal soundtracks. However, there’s actually a cohesive storyline running through the games that links them together. The latest addition, Doom: The Dark Ages, adds another layer to the tale of the Doom Slayer, allowing players to once more engage in tearing apart hordes of demons.

In the main storyline of Doom, there’s a series of games that start with the original installment. Yet, it also branches out into spin-offs and reboots that don’t align with the primary narrative. Take Doom 3 for instance, which doesn’t fit within the main timeline. Furthermore, developer-made mods like Sigil and The Plutonia Experiment, while of exceptional quality, are not recognized as official lore.

13. Doom

The Marine First Fights The Forces Of Hell

  • Year: 2022

On Mars’ twin moons Phobos and Deimos, scientists establish research bases, eventually working on creating inter-moon portals. However, this process accidentally opens a gateway to what appears to be Hell. The character at the center of Doom is called Doom Guy, who chose Phobos as his home after refusing to carry out massacres against innocent civilians for the military and attacking his superior officer. This act of rebellion ultimately turns out to be fortunate for him.

In the grim scenario that unfolds, Doom Guy emerges as the lone living soul amidst his marine comrades who were twisted into gruesome zombie-like soldiers by the malevolent forces of Hell. Alone, he fights relentlessly against waves of the undead, demons, and grotesque aberrations on Phobos. His journey continues until he’s transported to Deimos, a moon that vanished when Hell’s armies invaded, only to discover it had been swallowed by Hell and reconfigured according to its twisted new terrain.

As a dedicated slayer, I wield every tool at my disposal – from the legendary BFG-9000 to an indomitable chainsaw – hacking my way through the tormented realms of Hell. My ultimate goal: vanquish the Spider Mastermind, halting the demonic onslaught that threatened Mars and its satellites. For a moment, I tasted victory, but it was fleeting; using a portal, I returned to Earth, only to find it under the same dark siege as my former battleground.

12. Doom 2: Hell On Earth

This Time It’s Personal For Doom Guy

  • Year: 2022

In the game titled “Doom 2: Earth’s Inferno“, the cities have been overtaken and transformed into terrifying, Hell-like environments by invading demons. The protagonist, Doom Guy, returns to find that his cherished pet rabbit, Daisy, has met a tragic end. Enraged, he resumes his battle against the forces of Hell, seeking not only vengeance on these demons but also helping humanity evacuate Earth so he can carry on as the last human survivor on this planet.

In his pursuit of the remnants of the invasion blueprint from Hell, Doom Guy is led to another urban area for a destructive rampage. However, it’s in this city that he discovers a gateway back to the very realm of Hell – a place he exerted great effort to flee from. Here, Doom Guy encounters and vanquishes Baphomet, infamously known as the Icon of Sin, who leads the hordes of Hell and orchestrated their assault on Earth, producing demons and undead minions directly from its malevolent mind.

11. Doom 64

Returning To Mars To Fight The Mother

  • Year: Unknown

After years of Earth recovering following a demonic attack, Doom Guy is dispatched back to Mars and its moons because demons have been revived by an unknown power. This is when Doom 64 enters the scene, as it adopts a more ominous tone with a chilling atmosphere. In this game, Doom Guy fights through hordes of Imps, Hell Knights, Cacodemons, Cyberdemons, and other well-known adversaries.

On this occasion, the demons are being headed by a formidable demon called the Matriarch of All Demons, who presents Doomslayer with his toughest test yet. She compels him to employ novel skills and tools, like the Unmaker and three mystical keys, for a return trip to Hell to vanquish the Matriarch. In the end, Doomslayer decides to remain in Hell, fully aware that the demons will persist in their relentless pursuit.

Due to the 2020 port release of an additional chapter called “The Lost Levels“, the game now includes a character named the Resurrector, who is the sister of the Mother. This newcomer initiates a battle on another planet: Sedna, targeting Doom Guy. However, it seems that Doom Guy cannot be defeated, causing him to repel armies in an attempt to return to Hell and eliminate the Resurrector. Thus, he embarks on a solo crusade against Hell itself.

10. Rise Of The Doom Slayer

The Marine Goes From A Guy To A Slayer

  • Years: Unknown

A significant amount of events unfold between games, as depicted in both Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal. This narrative unveils that the protagonist, colloquially known as Doom Guy, is mysteriously transported to a distinct dimension called Argent D’Nur during his relentless rampage. The inhabitants of this world, namely the Argenta people, and their angelic counterparts, the Maykrs, are captivated by Doom Guy’s prowess in eliminating demons and his unyielding fury that fuels his urge to tear and destroy.

In a gladiatorial setting, Doom Guy demonstrated unmatched ferocity that surpassed any other fighter, eventually gaining him entry into the Night Sentinels’ elite group. Serving with exceptional skill and devotion, he proved to be their most formidable warrior, despite his sole focus being on eliminating more demons. As an outsider, he became their most esteemed champion.

The heroic stories about a marine battling in Hell and Argent D’nur would lead to him gaining a legendary title deeply rooted in Doom lore, known as the Slayer of Doom, or simply the Doom Slayer. This warrior is the sole entity that chills demons across various dimensions, particularly when they are under the influence of the Maykrs.

9. Doom: The Dark Ages

The Slayer’s Exploits With The Night Sentinels

  • Year: Unknown

In “Doom: The Dark Ages,” the protagonist, known as the Slayer, is compelled by the Maykrs to serve as a lethal weapon, tasked with annihilating demons and then returning to the Kreed Maykr’s vessel for his next assignment. With his personal freedom taken away, all that remains within him is an unyielding fury towards demons. Prince Ahzrak embarks on a warpath in search of the Heart of Argent, a powerful Night Sentinel relic. This quest culminates in a fierce battle on the floating metropolis of Aratum. King Novik of the Sentinels manages to secure the Heart before Prince Ahzrak and orders the evacuation of the city before it’s destroyed.

Contrarily, the adversaries from Hell launched a retaliation against the Sentinel Fortress. In this assault, Ahzrak seized the Heart of Argent by force, yet its energy supply was absent. The Slayer, now immune to the Maykrs’ leash, repelled Ahzrak and collaborated with Thira, Novik’s daughter, to amplify his armored shield’s power. Thira serves as the energy source for the Heart of Argent, harboring the spectral essence of a Wraith within her.

In a surprising turn of events, the Kreed Maykr deceives both her ally, the Slayer, and herself, leading to Thira’s capture and the Slayer being jailed by the Old Ones. In desperation, the Slayer triggers an explosive device in his armor, only to find himself transported to Hell where he battles through hordes of enemies to return to Argent D’Nur.

Upon resurrection at the hands of Commander Valen, the Slayer confronts and defeats the treacherous Kreed Maykr before engaging Prince Ahzrak in battle, ultimately pushing him back into the depths of Hell and rescuing Thira’s soul. The narrative concludes with the Maykrs asserting that Kreed acted independently, while the Night Sentinels ready themselves for their next assignment, and the Slayer assumes command of the Kreed Maykr’s spaceship.

8. The Argent D’Nur Civil War

How The Maykrs Destroyed The Night Sentinels

  • Years: Unknown

The Maykrs seem divine and ethereal, yet they possess a physical form like the demons that the Slayer battles. They sustain their immortality not by transforming into monstrous beings from Hell, but through a force called Argent energy. This energy originates in Hell, being shaped by the power of souls, which explains why the Khan Makyr sometimes collaborate with demonic forces, leading to the Night Sentinels’ uprising.

The fierce war in Argent D’Nur was incredibly destructive, yet the Maykrs perceived their most formidable enemy as the Doom Slayer. Consequently, they devised a cunning plan to capture and imprison him within a sarcophagus, deep inside Hell. This act ultimately led to the demise of the Sentinels, particularly significant when one of them, Valen, struck a bargain with a Hell Priest. In return for the resurrection of his son, Valen agreed to hand over the Wraiths, the beings responsible for creating the Sentinels and the Argenta people.

In Valen’s transaction, Argent D’Nur succumbed entirely to demonic rule, and even his request was fulfilled, but with an unexpected turn. As a result, Valen’s son was distorted and transformed into a new Symbol of Corruption. Simultaneously, a Maykr named Samur, also known as the Seraphim, fled Argent D’Nur in rebellion against the Khan Maykr to implement his strategy disguised on Earth.

7. Back To Mars

Samuel Hayden Prepared For The Next Demonic Invasion

  • Year: 2145

In a surprising twist, Samur disguises himself as Dr. Samuel Hayden, a human figure, and orchestrates the UAC’s return to Mars more than a century following the initial Hell incursions. Under the guise of an unfortunate incident, Hayden initiates another gateway to Hell, aiming to tap into Argent energy. However, he is well-aware of his actions, intending to utilize this power to build VEGA, a defense system for mankind, which is infused with the might of the Father – an ancient entity rumored to be the creator of all life.

Argent Energy’s corrosive nature caused Hayden grave harm, leading to brain cancer, and ultimately necessitated a transfer of his consciousness into a robotic body for research continuation. This included seeking the ultimate weapon against the infernal realm, known as the Doom Slayer, who remains confined within his sarcophagus.

While excavating through the depths, UAC discovers the Slayer’s tomb and retrieves it, intending to analyze it on Mars. However, unbeknownst to them, Hayden was only keeping it safe until another Hell invasion occurred. As fate would have it, his prediction came true; demons once again emerged onto Mars’ surface, just as they did in 2022.

6. Doom (2016)

The Doom Slayer Returns Where It All Started

  • Year: 2149

In the year 2149, I find myself immersed in a chilling scenario – it’s none other than the updated version of Doom (originally released as Doom 4). As a researcher for UAC, Olivia Pierce, I’ve allowed my fascination with Hell to consume me. I’ve even dabbled with the Dark Lord himself. Now, I’m at the helm of a cult that worships demons. Our actions have triggered a new onslaught of these malevolent beings, channeled through the Argent Tower. This, in turn, has awakened the legendary Doom Slayer, plunging me into a fight for survival against the demonic hordes.

In his already fierce state, the Doom Slayer wakes up to find that humans have released Hell once more, compelling him to complete a task he had settled over a century ago. Under the guidance of Samuel Hayden and VEGA, unaware of their hidden truths, the Doom Slayer massacres every demon and undead creature on Mars before embarking on another battle within Hell itself.

In my gaming world, I’m perpetually zipping between Mars and the underworld as the Doom Slayer, slashing through hordes of beasts – from freshly-minted Cyberdemons and Hell Guards, all the way up to Olivia Pierce transformed into her Spider Mastermind form. My mission? To disable the Well that’s fueling the invasion from below. This epic battle is made possible by an artifact called the Crucible, which I used to liberate three Wraiths from the clutches of Hell’s corruption. However, in the closing moments of Doom (2016), I was double-crossed by Hayden, who snatched the Crucible and hurled me off to some unknown destination.

5. Doom VFR

A Lone Scientist Finished The Doom Slayer’s Job

  • Year: 2149

In the aftermath of the storyline in Doom (2016), the game Doom VFR introduces a new character, Abraham Peters, who was the lone survivor among the UAC on Mars. Unlike others, he managed to evade the effects of Olivia Pierce’s release of Hell. However, when Peters meets his end due to an attack, he undergoes a transformation into a robotic form, similar to Hayden, and embarks on his own journey.

In a determined effort, Peters navigates Mars, including areas resembling Hell, to rid UAC’s Martian base of residual Argent energy that demons might exploit and close any open portals. Regrettably, during this mission, his robotic form is annihilated, resulting in the elimination of his consciousness from reality.

In the Doom universe, Doom VFR stands out as the unique instance where the main character deviates from being Doom Slayer or a marine, offering an engaging virtual reality shooting adventure for series enthusiasts. Throughout the narrative, Samuel Hayden keeps tabs on Peters’ advancements, and in a poignant moment before his demise, Peters receives a heartfelt greeting and thanks from Hayden. This brief interaction offers Peters comfort as darkness envelops him.

4. Hell On Earth…Again

The Earth Had No Chance Without Doom Slayer

  • Years: 2151–2163

Without the Doom Slayer or the Hell-worshiping cult in the picture, Earth’s fate was already sealed at the outset, given that Samuel Hayden led the resistance against an invasion resembling aliens. As the alliance between Hell and the Urdakian Maykrs swept across Earth, more than 60% of its population were devoured for the extraction of Ardent energy from their souls. Tragically, the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) eventually fell into the hands of cultists and corrupted priests, who had previously been involved in the Argent D’Nur war.

Despite the Crucible and the emergence of a new resistance group called the Armored Response Coalition, Samuel Hayden was powerless against the forces of Hell. In the clashes with demons, Hayden met his end, leaving his robotic body to be taken by the ARC. Humanity appeared to have lost all hope after decades of being overrun by demonic invaders, until an unusual space structure became visible in orbit.
