The following contains spoilers from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga.
Summary
- Brave demon slayers like Muichiro Tokito and Mitsuri Kanroji sacrificed their lives fighting powerful demons.
- Gyomei Himejima and Obanai Iguro played crucial roles in defeating the Demon King despite succumbing to injuries.
- Shinobu Kocho and Kyojuro Rengoku displayed bravery through sacrificial acts in confronting formidable demons.
Battling demons endowed with extraordinary abilities who seem invulnerable to regular assaults is an arduous undertaking that only a handful of courageous individuals dare to engage in. Regrettably, these heroic confrontations against the dark side are essential for humankind’s preservation, as Muzan and his minions strive to dominate the globe in the Demon Slayer comic series and animated show.
As an observer, I’ve witnessed throughout this saga, courageous demon slayers tirelessly battling malevolent and bloodthirsty entities who find joy in inflicting pain on others. It’s not shocking, given this reality, that numerous valiant warriors from the Demon Slayer Corps paid the ultimate price while fighting demons. Their heroic acts resulted in untimely, heart-wrenching ends, as they sacrificed their lives for a future they would never experience themselves, glowing with hope and promise.
7. Muichiro Tokito
The Mist Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 44, “Against Corps Rules”
As Muichiro Tokito encountered Kokushibo, it became clear to him that he was facing one of the most powerful beings in existence. The mere proximity of Kokushibo instilled fear within Muichiro. However, aware of the danger, the courageous young demon slayer stood his ground and fought valiantly, always prioritizing the battle over his own safety.
The fierce rage within me lingers, as if etched into my being. No matter what happens or what memories I may lose, this anger will stay with me until the end of my days. This anger is why I’ve dedicated myself to training relentlessly, even to the point of bleeding internally, in order to vanquish demons – and not just defeat them, but wipe them out entirely!
Regrettably, I found myself witnessing a lopsided conflict that left Tokito severely outmatched. By the moment reinforcements arrived, Muichiro was gravely wounded and bleeding heavily. Despite his own condition, he persisted in battling Kokushibo until ultimately succumbing to a lethal blow from the demon. However, his valiant efforts significantly weakened the Upper-Rank One, paving the way for others to eventually defeat the demon.
6. Mitsuri Kanroji
The Love Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 44, “Against Corps Rules”
In the storyline known as the Infinity Castle arc, the character Kanroji, with Obanai Iguro by her side, faced off against the latest Upper-Rank Four demon, Nakime. Following their fierce encounter, she teamed up with some of the Demon Slayer Corps’ finest warriors to engage in a battle against the Demon King. Despite their heroic efforts, led by legendary figures, the fight with Muzan was brutal and claimed numerous lives. Tragically, Kanroji lost her life due to her injuries, finding her last moments in the arms of Obanai Iguro.
5. Obanai Iguro
The Serpent Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 45, “Trial by Hashira”
Amongst his final moments, Obanai Iguro bore witness to Mitsuri’s demise in his embrace. Despite grappling with his own wounds, he displayed courage until the Love Hashira succumbed to her injuries. In the event of their potential reunion in another existence, he pledged they would share a life and wed. True to his word, Iguro was not deceiving; he was all too conscious of his impending mortality. Shortly after making this vow to Mitsuri, Iguro too breathed his last, still clutching the Love Hashira.
The deaths of Obanai and Mitsuri left fans feeling sorrowful, since it underscored the heavy price they paid in pursuit of a higher purpose. Remarkably, Iguro fulfilled his vow, as their reborn selves years later found themselves united.
4. Gyomei Himejima
The Stone Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 44, “Against Corps Rules”
In the decisive clash, Gyomei Himejima played an indispensable part in the triumph of the Demon Slayer Corps. At first, he teamed up with Genya, Sanemi, and Muichiro to engage and vanquish the Upper-Rank One, Kokushibo. Despite enduring multiple severe wounds during the fierce combat, he stayed resolute in carrying out his responsibilities as a demon slayer.
I take pride in being a part of humanity, living and passing on in the same manner. Respectfully, let’s refrain from imposing our thoughts, however elevated we may perceive them, upon others.
The Stone Guardian bravely fought alongside his allies against the Demon King. He uncovered mysteries about Muzan’s unusual body structure, allowing others to take advantage of his vulnerabilities. His insightful discoveries were instrumental in defeating Muzan Kibutsuji. However, his wounds ultimately became too severe, and he tragically passed away. Sadly, Gyomei never got to meet Sayo, the girl he had rescued at the temple long ago. He missed out on the resolution he needed. Regrettably, Sayo also didn’t have a chance to apologize to him for her unwitting role in his condemnation.
3. Shinobu Kocho
The Insect Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 28, “Urgent Summons”
Throughout the series, numerous deaths occur, yet none are as harrowing as Shinobu Kocho’s. Since her sister was murdered by Doma, she had harbored a desire for revenge. In the Infinity Castle arc, she faced the demon, fully aware that she stood no chance against him.
Shinobu understood that facing Upper-Rank Two on her own was impossible for her. Thus, she concocted a cunning strategy: she ingested potent wisteria poison over several months prior to engaging with Doma. When the confrontation ensued, Shinobu anticipated losing and being consumed by the demon, who would in turn perish from the poison. Her selfless act unfolded precisely as planned, and she significantly contributed to Doma’s defeat.
2. Kyojuro Rengoku
The Flame Hashira
- Manga Debut: Chapter 44, “Against Corps Rules”
During the Mugen Train storyline, Tanjiro and his companion joined forces with Rengoku to explore the disappearances of more than forty individuals on the enigmatic train. This investigation culminated in a face-off against Enmu, the Twelve Kizuki’s Lower-Rank One demon. Despite the victory, evil forces began to spread throughout the area. Suddenly, Upper-Rank Three Akaza emerged unexpectedly, leading Rengoku to realize that he had to battle alone since many of his comrades were already wounded or exhausted.
From my perspective, life unfolds as a chain of choices. Moments arrive without warning, and they often come with limited possibilities or precious little time for contemplation. Yet, the path you take in those decisive instances shapes your identity.
Kyojuro, the Flame Pillar, fought a remarkable battle against Akaza, leaving him momentarily bewildered at certain instances. Yet, his power was no match for the demon’s might. In the end, Akaza delivered a lethal strike and departed as dawn approached. Overwhelmed by the intensity of their encounter, Kyojuro accepted his fate. Witnessing this heroic battle left Tanjiro and Inosuke deeply inspired by Kyojuro’s courage.
1. Yoriichi Tsugikuni
The Greatest Demon Slayer Ever
- Manga Debut: Chapter 99, “Someone’s Dream”
In the Sengoku period, Yoriichi emerged, inherently skilled with the sword. Born with a Demon Slayer Mark, his abilities and movements were nearly beyond human capabilities. Throughout his life, he engaged in numerous battles, but one stands out as particularly legendary – his confrontation against the Demon King Muzan. Had it not been for the demon’s escape, Yoriichi could have defeated Kibutsuji. His power was such that no demon dared to challenge him. However, in his late 80s, he faced his brother who had transformed into a demon named Kokushibo.
At a ripe old age, Yoriichi retained remarkable agility and strength. However, despite Muzan’s influence, Kokushibo found it hard to anticipate Yoriichi’s actions, making their battles challenging. Had it not been for his advanced years, Yoriichi might have effortlessly vanquished the demon. But alas, age eventually overtook him during a single attack, causing him to stand motionless and succumb to death. Kokushibo was never able to defeat his brother in life, and this unfulfilled battle lingered in his conscience for countless centuries.
