Summary
- Former DC stars like Jason Momoa are making comebacks in the new DC Universe.
- Jai Courtney expresses hope of reprising his role as Captain Boomerang in the DC Universe.
- Director James Gunn has a history of working with actors in multiple projects, potentially benefiting actors like Courtney.
It appears that DC Studios has started fresh with their cinematic and television world, yet this doesn’t rule out the possibility of actors from previous films making a return. An example of this is Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman for many years before taking on the role of Lobo in 2026’s “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”. Additionally, another actor associated with DC is optimistic about the chance of collaborating again within the DC Universe (DCU).
After a decade marked by underwhelming performances at the box office, Warner Bros.’ DCEU came to an end with “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” in 2023. Following years of internal changes involving executives like Zack Snyder, Geoff Johns, Jon Berg, and Walter Hamada, a new team led by James Gunn and Peter Safran was appointed in 2022 to rebuild the universe from scratch. With a fresh start on the horizon, even established DCEU actors like Henry Cavill were moving on. The upcoming “Superman” release in July has generated immense excitement for the forthcoming DCU, with actors frequently asked about their involvement. One actor, in particular, has shown interest in returning if given the opportunity.
In an interview with Variety discussing his new movie Dangerous Animals, Jai Courtney talked about working on previous DC films as Captain Boomerang from the Suicide Squad. Fans will recall that Courtney’s character, Boomerang, met his demise at the start of James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad, which left the Australian actor feeling disappointed. “I said, ‘Come on, man, Boomerang is awesome,'” Courtney told Variety. “James replied, ‘You know these rules aren’t set in stone. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s permanent, right?’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely!’ So there’s still a chance.
“Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.”
Jai Courtney Believes Captain Boomerang Could Return Somewhere Down The Line For DC Studios
James Gunn is a director who cherishes collaborating with actors repeatedly. Once you’re in his close-knit group, it seems like you’re in for the long haul – just ask Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, Steve Agee, Linda Cardellini, and Gregg Henry about their friendship with Gunn and its impact on their careers. As of now, Courtney isn’t one of Gunn’s regular collaborators, but Captain Boomerang was one of the few aspects that people appreciated in the 2016 Suicide Squad movie. Whether Courtney will reprise his role as Boomerang or take on a different character in the future is still uncertain, but having him back wouldn’t be detrimental for DC or Courtney himself.
Following his successful supporting appearance in “Jack Reacher” in 2012, Courtney was labeled as one of Hollywood’s rising stars. Subsequent lead roles in various franchises such as “Die Hard”, “Divergent”, “Terminator”, and the DC Extended Universe followed, but his career didn’t quite reach the heights that were anticipated. While it’s true that most of his big-budget films received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences, Courtney remained active in the industry. This year, he appeared in Netflix’s “American Primeval”, and he is set to appear alongside Alan Ritchson and Dennis Quaid in the upcoming film “War Machine”.
Regardless of whether Courtney avoids participating in a project from DC Studios, it appears he’ll consistently find employment opportunities in Hollywood—a feat not every actor can boast about.
