7. Anna Alcott
This Flawed Character Undergoes a Deeply Traumatic Story
- Series: Season 12 (“Delicate”)
- Actress: Emma Roberts
The burden of fame is something that can only be grasped by those who have endured it, as they must constantly maintain their public image, dressing appropriately and speaking correctly. This strain is particularly prominent in season 12, exacerbated further by personal relationship issues and IVF treatments. Our main character, Ann Alcott, played by Emma Roberts, faces immense hardships in the series, her mental strength faltering under this relentless pressure.
This gives her character a touch of realism since anyone might doubt their own sanity after such unusual events, suggesting that Anna is struggling. However, she ultimately manages to overcome her challenges, vanquishing all the cultists using a spell taught by Adeline. The story concludes with her triumphantly holding the Oscar and embracing her son.
6. Madison Montgomery
This Witch is a Supreme B**ch
- Series: Season 3 (“Coven”), Season 8 (“Apocalypse)
- Actress: Emma Roberts
As a movie reviewer, I must say that Emma Roberts has truly captivated me twice in “American Horror Story” by bringing two famous characters to life. Initially, she portrayed Madison Montgomery, a character who made her debut in “Coven.” In this role, she breathed life into a young witch named Madison, who was enrolled in an academy for witches and believed she had the best chance of becoming the next Supreme after she miraculously returned from the dead with a flawless medical report.
Despite not managing to finish the Seven Wonders, Madison remains an exceptionally powerful and captivating witch. She’s straightforward, sometimes bluntly so, and can be self-absorbed, earning her the title of a queen in a less flattering sense. However, her abrasive nature is part of her allure, as it’s hard for anyone to truly dislike Madison, even when she’s at her most catty. Fans were thrilled to see her return in Apocalypse, particularly since her departure from the series was dramatic and intense.
5. The Countess
A Deadly and Beautiful Vampire
- Series: Season 5 (“Hotel”)
- Actress: Lady Gaga
Even though Lady Gaga wasn’t new to acting when American Horror Story came along, her role as the Countess in Season 5, Hotel, turned out to be her biggest success yet. The Hotel Cortez has a dark past: its original owner, Patrick James March, isn’t fully departed from this world, and there are various individuals and otherworldly beings dwelling within its walls.
Among these individuals, there’s a captivating woman often referred to as the Countess – a vampire who displays a unique blend of maternal instincts, resorting to abducting children and transforming them into vampires similar to herself. Despite this seemingly nurturing aspect, the Countess is also a formidable and alluring figure with a sorrowful past entangled in her ill-fated love for Rudolph Valentino and Natacha Rambova. It’s challenging not to empathize with her, even when she’s inflicting gruesome wounds.
4. Marie Laveau
The Powerful Voodoo Queen from Legend
- Series: Season 3 (“Coven”)
- Actress: Angela Bassett
In the realm of its supernatural setting, the series Coven boasts an abundance of remarkable female characters, one of whom is modeled after a truly influential and authentic historical figure: Marie Laveau. This character, believed to be immortal due to her magical prowess, continues to thrive in contemporary times, managing a hair salon in New Orleans. Her animosity towards the witches from the academy, particularly their Supreme Fiona, runs particularly deep.
Indeed, I find myself allied with the potent Voodoo Queen, partnering with Fiona against a mutual adversary. The sight of these two mighty women united is a delight to behold, for together they can unleash chaos and havoc in ways that no one could ever imagine, as Marie’s dark magic knows no bounds when it comes to devising torment.
3. Lana Winters
Neither Briarcliff nor Bloody Face Could Break Her
- Series: Season 2 (“Asylum”)
- Actress: Sarah Paulson
The second installment of “American Horror Story” is frequently praised for its intense focus on horror and well-developed characters, including both villains and heroes. While Bloody Face is a formidable character who typically leaves no survivors among his victims, he was remarkably outwitted by Lana Winters, a memorable character in “Asylum,” who has become an iconic figure within the series.
Initially posing as a curious journalist eager to learn about their new bakery, the reporter secretly seeks information on the infamous serial killer known as Bloody Face. Her determination is one of her key traits, however, it leads her to be admitted into Briarcliff, where they aim to ‘cure’ her of her homosexuality. Despite facing immense challenges from both the institution and the real murderer, Lana emerges victorious, escaping with incriminating evidence and ultimately flourishing in her career, demonstrating her remarkable strength and tenacity.
2. Liz Taylor
The Lifeblood and Glamor of Hotel Cortez
- Series: Season 5 (“Hotel”)
- Actress: Denis O’Hare
It appears that several employees at Hotel Cortez choose to live there long-term, including those who are still among the living, like the bartender referred to as Liz Taylor. At first, she visited the hotel for business purposes but then crossed paths with the Countess, who recognized her true self and assisted her in transforming into the woman destined to be, through a makeover.
In this particular scene, Liz came across as genuinely heartfelt and played a crucial role in molding her character into the fearless and composed badass we see on the show. She wasn’t intimidated by anyone or anything, not even two self-important social media influencers whom she firmly put in their place in one of the most gratifying scenes of the season. As a devoted family member, Liz chose to be with her loved ones forever in death, opting to pass away at their hands, with her longtime friend the Countess delivering the final blow. Until the very end and beyond, even in the afterlife, Liz Taylor remains one of the most adorable characters in all of American Horror Story.
1. Fiona Goode
During Her Reign of Supreme, Fiona was a Force to Be Reckoned With
- Series: Season 3 (“Coven”)
- Actress: Riley Voelkel (Flashbacks), Jessica Lange (modern day)
In Season 3, titled Coven, magic and witchcraft were introduced as a group of talented young individuals gathered at Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Gifted Young Women, a special boarding school for those with magical abilities. A newly awakened witch named Zoe arrives at this academy following an incident where her powers led to the demise of her boyfriend. Here, she crosses paths with other witches such as Madison, Nan, Queenie, headmistress Cordelia, and eventually Fiona Goode, who is revealed to be the Supreme herself.
As a devoted fan of “American Horror Story,” I can’t help but be captivated by Fiona, a character who wields power, self-interest, and manipulation like no other. Despite her questionable traits, Fiona remains one of the most intriguing figures to watch unfold within the series. As her time draws near, she refuses to relinquish her position without a struggle, demonstrating repeatedly why she was destined to become Supreme initially. Even in the twilight of her life, Fiona is determined to go out swinging, proving that she earned her title as Supreme in every sense of the word.
