The LEGO Group has decided to halt the fan-made game “Bionicle: Masks of Power,” causing sadness among those eagerly anticipating its release. Launched in 2001, LEGO’s “Bionicle” line offered buildable action figures and a rich narrative centered around mystical heroes and dark forces from the past. This non-licensed product line soon became one of LEGO’s most popular and cherished, boasting a comic series published by DC Comics, four animated films, and games with varying levels of quality.
As a dedicated Bionicle fan, it’s been a quiet journey since the line was discontinued in 2010, aside from brief resurrections and subtle nods. However, the excitement has been reignited with the emergence of Team Kanohi, a group of passionate fans who are creating their own Bionicle video game, titled “Bionicle: Masks of Power”. Announced in 2021, this game is set to draw inspiration from modern open-world titles like “Horizon: Zero Dawn”, revisiting the epic tale of the original Toa Mata and their fierce fight against Makuta on the island of Mata Nui. It’s a new chapter for us old-school Bionicle fans, and I can hardly wait to see it come to life!
Masks of Power”, Team Kanohi did release a guide for the demo that was scheduled for launch on August 10th.
Bionicle: Masks of Power Fan Game is Being Shut Down
Previously, LEGO has nurtured positive ties with fan-made video game initiatives, even promoting titles like the much-loved “Bionicle: Quest for Mata Nui” on their podcasts. However, as pointed out by Team Kanohi, it appears that LEGO’s approach towards fan-created media may have shifted. The potential closure of “Bionicle: Masks of Power” could be due to concerns that it might be misconstrued as an official LEGO game.
Based on what has been displayed, Bionicle: Masks of Power appeared exceptionally refined, with Team Kanohi indicating that their demo was nearing completion when The LEGO Group decided to halt the project. With another fan-made Bionicle project not coming to fruition, the future of Bionicle is uncertain, despite gamers fondly remembering the toy line that played a significant role in LEGO’s resurgence during the 2000s.
