In today’s advanced era, finding a good old-fashioned brawler game can be quite challenging. So, when one does emerge, it’s definitely worth acknowledging. Enter Towerborne, the latest addition to the genre, currently available in Early Access on Xbox consoles through Game Pass’ preview program. Despite being in a preliminary stage, it boasts a fully-fledged set of features and numerous live-service aspects.
In Towerborne, players can embark on missions either solo or with companions. They have the opportunity to gather loot, increase their level, and enjoy a unique feature: they can select from four distinct classes without being confined to any one of them. Currently, there are four classes available in Towerborne – Pyroclast, Rockbreaker, Sentinel, and Shadowstriker – and we’re going to compare how engaging each class is to play.
4. Sentinel
A Classic Sword And Shield Combo
In an RPG (Role-Playing Game), The Sentinel is often a standard configuration for a warrior or fighter, consisting of a sword in one hand for offense and a shield to deflect incoming attacks. What sets Towerborne apart, though, is the eye-catching design of its weapons, some of which bear a striking resemblance to swords found in a Kingdom Hearts game. Although using the shield may reduce damage, it’s more effective for players to dodge harmful situations instead of overly relying on the shield.
Due to its role as a defensive specialist, the Sentinel doesn’t initially have the flair that other character classes exhibit with their attacking abilities. The initial offensive skill for the Sentinel, a lightning dash, is decent, but there are more effective skills for the Sentinel to acquire over time. Essentially, the Sentinel follows a typical warrior archetype in RPGs, which isn’t necessarily a negative aspect. However, it does take some time to unlock the impressive skills and show off flashy moves.
3. Rockbreaker
Smash Through The Competition
In other RPGs, the Rockbreaker character is similar to a monk class, as they inflict damage using their bare fists. However, unlike traditional monks, they move a bit more slowly and their preferred weapon, oversized gloves, are comically large. These gloves resemble the giant Hulk hands that were released alongside Ang Lee’s 2003 movie, sparking numerous amusing memes and jokes on television. Although these gloves may not generate as many memes, they are still enjoyable to use. Players can accumulate momentum to make their blows as powerful as trucks.
As a Rockbreaker follower, I’ll kick off by saying that the fundamental ability empowers me to charge up my gloves and discharge a potent air burst against adversaries. This blast can push enemies away or aloft, leaving them susceptible to further assaults. My initial unlockable skill shares similarities, but instead of an air burst, it loosens the ground beneath them, causing more damage. The majority of subsequent skills pack a punch, making the Rockbreaker class the most formidable offensively among all. However, keep in mind that due to the slower response time of my gloves, some players might find this class challenging if they prefer quicker or more balanced classes in their RPGs.
2. Shadowstriker
A Fast Nina-Like Damage Dealer
The Shadowstriker character resembles a traditional rogue or thief class in a role-playing game (RPG). This class allows players to wield a pair of swift daggers for combat. However, the Shadowstriker is comparatively less powerful in terms of physical strength, but this can be compensated by moving swiftly across the battlefield, either on foot or with their natural abilities. They also possess the ability to hurl a dagger that, upon explosion, will teleport them to the enemy’s location.
Regardless of whether the thrown daggers strike their targets, players will be teleported across the battlefield, making it an effective means of dodging powerful enemy attacks, such as when fighting a boss. The initial skill you can unlock will cause three daggers to appear on the ground; if enemies come into contact with them, they’ll sustain damage and further harm will ensue upon the dagger explosions after a brief delay. As the Shadowstriker progresses in levels, it transforms more into a ninja-like class rather than the standard rogue or thief build, requiring commitment to achieve the necessary speed and grace.
1. Pyroclast
A Battle-Ready Mage
In the game Towerborne,, there are no character classes that specialize in magic, which is unusual for an RPG. However, the Pyroclast comes quite close, offering a unique combat experience. Players wield a massive two-handed staff with a built-in furnace at its end. As enemies are attacked, the furnace accumulates heat. When the meter is fully charged, players can activate it to enter an enhanced state, setting enemies ablaze and dealing continuous damage as they attack. This heightened state also triggers new combo sequences, often culminating in dramatic bursts of fire to further scorch enemies.
In the game Towerborne, this class, known as the Pyroclast, is capable of dealing damage over time, which is essential for players to endure both solo and group play. Pumping up its meter manually might take some time, but it’s worth it due to its slow yet powerful fire-infused attacks, similar to the Rockbreaker’s gloves. The class even boasts an initial skill that propels players skyward, creating a fiery tornado. Considering all these factors, the Pyroclast is undoubtedly one of the strongest classes in the game at present.
