2027 can’t come soon enough for me as I eagerly anticipate getting my hands on the remake of Frostpunk, titled Frostpunk: 1886. This isn’t just a facelift; 11 bit studios have confirmed it will offer fresh content, new gameplay mechanics, and a novel Purpose path, to name a few enhancements. Some of these innovative mechanics could even be borrowed from Frostpunk 2.
In late 2024, Frostpunk 2 was launched, and according to its development plan, it will continue to receive free content upgrades and significant expansion packs until 2026. Although only six years separate the initial release of Frostpunk from its sequel, Frostpunk 2, the swift pace of game development means that many of its features and mechanics are significantly improved. In an interview with Game Rant, game director Maciej Sułecki announced that the upcoming title, Frostpunk: 1886, will leverage these enhancements.
Frostpunk: 1886 Will Borrow Systems and Mechanics From Frostpunk 2
As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the development of Frostpunk: 1886, a remake of the original game that was inspired during the shift to Unreal Engine for Frostpunk 2. It’s no wonder that this upcoming project shares ties with its predecessor and successor, as it plans to revisit the roots while incorporating some captivating elements from the sequel. However, the specific features haven’t been fully disclosed yet, as the team is still deliberating on what would best suit Frostpunk: 1886, given the significant scale difference between the original and its sequel. After all, any borrowed features must seamlessly fit into the remake, much like a well-tailored glove.
As Sułecki explained,
Absolutely! At present, we’re assessing the features and workings of our initial game, leveraging the robust structure established in Frostpunk 2 as our base. Many aspects from the second game are being incorporated into the first one, although not all decisions have been made since the games differ fundamentally. The chosen elements must seamlessly blend with the original game, ensuring improvements and quality-of-life adjustments. However, we don’t yet have a comprehensive list of these changes.
For Frostpunk 2 fans, there’s an exciting lineup ahead with post-launch content, the upcoming Frostpunk: 1886, and continued support up until 2027. Essentially, you can expect at least two years of fresh content for both games. This isn’t unexpected, given that 11 bit Studios views Frostpunk as a comprehensive universe and its own franchise.
It’s uncertain what lies ahead, but it appears that Frostpunk and 11 bit studios have a promising future. Frostpunk is merely one of the many games from 11 bit studios, and their upcoming Xbox Game Pass release of The Alters suggests a positive outlook for them too. They are also publishing Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault and Death Howl, both expected to launch in 2025 as well.
