In J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic The Lord of the Rings, Sauron, the formidable Dark Lord, is an incredibly fearsome adversary. His methods of intimidation aren’t limited to physical attacks, but extend to psychological torment as well. With the One Ring and his Maiar powers, he becomes nearly unbeatable. Yet, it’s worth noting that in a past confrontation, Sauron was surprisingly bested by none other than a dog. The defeat was so embarrassing for him that he had no choice but to retreat from the battle.

In various descriptions, Sauron is known for his ability to change his appearance. During the Second Age, he disguised himself as the benevolent Lord Annatar to trick the elves. Later, during The Lord of the Rings, he primarily resorted to deception and control to achieve his goals. However, in the First Age, when Sauron served Morgoth, the First Dark Lord, he had the power to transform into a vampire and a werewolf as well. It was in his werewolf form that Sauron encountered a legendary dog and suffered a remarkable defeat.

Who Was Huan, the Hound of Valinor?

Huan, a noble hound, originated from the realm of Valinor, graciously given by the hunter-Vala OromĂ« to Celegorm, one of FĂ«anor’s sons (the creator of the Silmarils) when the Noldor elves were still dwelling in Valinor. After Morgoth seized the Silmarils from FĂ«anor, triggering the exodus of the Noldor elves to Middle-earth out of vengeance, Celegorm and his followers, including Huan who remained loyal to his master, followed suit. Since he was bound by the same oath as Celegorm, Huan too was subjected to the Valar’s decree that barred the exiled elves from re-entering Valinor.

Born in Valinor, Huan wasn’t your typical canine. Towering in size and possessing immense strength, he was capable of overpowering even the mightiest werewolves. Unaffected by fatigue or requiring rest, he never fell sick, and his existence transcended mortality. Wise beyond his species, Huan could comprehend all human language, but due to a divine gift from the Valar, he was only allowed to speak three times in his entire life.

The ability to speak was foretold in a prophecy concerning Huan, predicting that Huan would not perish until he faced the strongest werewolf the world had ever known. This very prophecy connects his tale with those of LĂșthien and Beren, as well as Sauron.

Huan and LĂșthien

Among the numerous tales from the Era of Old, the story of LĂșthien and Beren stands out distinctly, and Huan the Hound plays a crucial role within it. LĂșthien was born to the elven King Thingol and Melian the Maia, while Beren hailed from one of the honorable lineages of Men who fought alongside the elves against Morgoth in battle. Enchanted by LĂșthien, Beren sought her father’s permission for marriage, but Thingol presented him with an insurmountable task: to retrieve a Silmaril from the very Iron Crown of Morgoth himself. Accompanied by Finrod Felagund (Galadriel’s brother) and ten elven allies loyal to Finrod, Beren embarked on this quest; however, they were eventually captured by Sauron and incarcerated in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, also known as the Isle of Werewolves.

Upon learning about Beren’s predicament, LĂșthien, much like Rapunzel, managed an escape from the watchful eyes of her father’s guards. However, instead of finding freedom, she was caught by Celegorm and his sibling Curufin. At first, they suggested aid for her quest, but soon enough, they too confined her within the walls of Nargothrond – a city they seized after its ruler, Finrod, departed with Beren. This is when Huan, the hound from Valinor, changed allegiance, defied Celegorm’s command, and assisted LĂșthien in breaking free. He escorted her to Tol-in Gaurhoth, where Sauron had been tormenting Beren.

Huan the Hound vs Wolf-Sauron

In their tragic journey, Sauron had slain all of Beren’s fellow travelers, including Finrod. On the brink of death, Beren found a glimmer of hope when LĂșthien sang from beyond the walls of Sauron’s tower. However, Sauron unleashed numerous werewolves against LĂșthien, but Huan managed to vanquish each one. As the fiercest of these wolves fell before Sauron, it growled ominously, “‘Huan is here.’” Recalling a prophecy about Huan, Sauron transformed himself into the most fearsome werewolf that had ever roamed the land. This transformation filled Huan with dread. Huan and Werewolf-Sauron then clashed in a fierce battle, during which Sauron launched relentless attacks. However, despite his vicious onslaughts, Huan ultimately emerged victorious over Sauron.

Firmly held down by Huan, Wolf-Sauron transformed into a snake, yet Huan’s hold remained firm. As he teetered on the brink of shedding his form entirely, LĂșthien presented Sauron with an option: surrender the tower to her and be released. Sauron complied, transforming into a vampire, at which point Huan allowed him to depart.

In the narrative that follows this clash with Sauron, I played a pivotal role. Alongside LĂșthien and Beren, I assisted in the daring heist of a Silmaril from Morgoth’s grasp, and we managed to escape. Before my final moments, I engaged in a fierce battle against Carcharoth, the wolf of Angband, a creation of Morgoth. Despite being gravely wounded, I claimed victory over him, fulfilling the prophecy that foretold my survival until I’d encountered the most formidable wolf in existence. Huan the Hound is one of the rare beings to have bested Sauron in battle and stands among the most admirable non-human characters in both The Lord of the Rings and Tolkien’s mythos. Truly, a noble canine through and through.
