This occurrence happened at a time when its rival service, Xbox Game Pass, is experiencing one of its most successful periods in operation. PlayStation Plus offers three different membership levels. The basic level, called PS Plus Essential, provides users with online multiplayer capabilities and a monthly selection of free games. The Extra tier mirrors the approach of Xbox Game Pass, offering a rotating catalog of games that subscribers can access for a limited duration. The Premium tier is an expansion of the Extra tier, including all the benefits of the lower tiers along with classic games from various PlayStation consoles such as PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3.

Unlike Xbox Game Pass, which consistently offers multiple day one games monthly, it’s uncommon for PS Plus Extra and Premium to release their own games on day one. In fact, there have been instances where the same day one game, such as “Blue Prince”, has been shared between the services. Notably, “Blue Prince” is a highly-acclaimed puzzle game that received exceptional reviews from critics, making it a significant addition to both Game Pass and PS Plus. However, in April 2025, PS Plus Extra and Premium only secured “Blue Prince” and an additional episode of the poorly-received “Lost Records: Bloom & Rage” as their day one games. In contrast, Xbox Game Pass showcased “Blue Prince” alongside highly anticipated titles like potential Game of the Year contender “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” and “Oblivion Remastered”, which was a surprise release.

Since April, neither PS Plus Extra nor Premium subscribers have received any new day-one games like Game Pass Ultimate users have with titles such as “Revenge of the Savage Planet” and “Doom: The Dark Ages.” However, it’s worth noting that day-one releases haven’t been a significant draw for PS Plus Extra or Premium in the first place. Instead, gamers join these tiers to access a vast collection of PS4 and PS5 games, along with retro titles given extra features in Premium. The recent updates for PS Plus Extra and Premium have not been particularly exciting, which is unfortunate considering the service has recently lost some of its top games.

Since its launch, many fans have felt that PS Plus Premium has been overlooked, but the removal of multiple Premium-exclusive titles like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and the first two Resistance games, with very little new content added in return, has sparked discontent among the gaming community.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was removed from PS Plus, but it’s currently playable through Xbox Game Pass.

It’s not just that popular third-party games like those on PS Plus Extra and Premium have been taken off the service, but Sony has also mysteriously removed some of its own titles. Among these were Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Infamous: Second Son from PS Plus Premium. In the past, Sony has taken away games from PS Plus without giving a reason. It’s possible that these classic games are being remastered or re-released in another form, but the fact that they were removed by PlayStation makes the recent update to PS Plus Extra and Premium feel even more disappointing.

If Sony fails to deliver an impressive lineup of new games for June 2025, it seems likely that the negative opinions about the service will persist. In the interim, the Xbox Game Pass is already shaping up to have a robust June 2025 lineup, making it evident which service provides the most value for subscribers at the moment.
