As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve always marveled at how Saturday Night Live has managed to stay culturally relevant for over half a century. It seems one of its comedy titans feels a major cast reshuffle might be on the horizon.
Initially titled “NBC’s Saturday Night,” this late-night sketch comedy series has grown into a cultural phenomenon since its premiere in October 1975. Not only did it launch the careers of stars like Will Ferrell, Bill Murray, and Tina Fey, but it also left an indelible mark on popular culture through productions such as “Wayne’s World” and “The Blues Brothers.” Despite experiencing fluctuations in quality over time, SNL has generally maintained a high standard and remained relevant while many other sketch shows have faded away quickly. Who can imagine the world of mainstream American comedy without figures like Adam Sandler, John Belushi, and Kristen Wiig? We owe the introduction of fresh comedic talents to the scene every few years to none other than SNL.
On Tuesday, Kenan Thompson, a long-time star of Saturday Night Live, attended the Reel Works 24th Changemakers Gala. In an interview with Page Six, he shared that the conclusion of this season’s SNL was both enjoyable and bittersweet due to potential cast changes during the summer hiatus. He hinted at a possible major shift next year, stating “it seems there might be a lot of change coming.” He added, “you wish everyone could stay forever, yet you understand that people may be making decisions this summer. It’s like wanting your children to remain young.” Thompson didn’t want to reveal too much, but suggested that several cast members could be leaving the show.
The future is unpredictable; I don’t wish to hinder anyone else’s progress or become a person stuck in their ways. Such instances are rare on ‘SNL’, but there are no absolute assurances, I suppose.
Kenan Thompson Believes Change Is On The Way At Saturday Night Live
Thompson has a deep understanding and expertise in Saturday Night Live, having been part of the show since 2003. While he will always be remembered by some as the young actor from The Mighty Ducks, All That, and Good Burger, his extensive tenure on SNL makes him the longest-serving cast member in the series’ esteemed history. Just like how people trust Ellen Pompeo’s insights about Grey’s Anatomy due to her longtime association with the show, Thompson’s knowledge about Saturday Night Live is well-established and respected.
Speaking about possible departures, there’s a lot of speculation going around. Two names that have recently gained attention are Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman, who seem to be poised for bigger opportunities in Hollywood. Michael Che and Colin Jost, who have been with the show for over a decade now, might also be considering moving towards new ventures. The other two cast members who have been here the longest (excluding Thompson, Che, and Jost) are Mikey Day and Heidi Gardner. It’s possible that either of them could decide to pursue other projects as well.
It isn’t certain which cast member might depart from Saturday Night Live during their annual hiatus, but it’s clear that some changes could be in store. We’ll have to wait and see who might be leaving.
