As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the thrilling announcement of BioShock 4, which has been more than five years ago. Yet, my excitement for the next chapter remains unabated. Rumors swirl that this time, we’ll be exploring the frozen realms of Aurora and Borealis – a departure from the underwater depths of Rapture and the sky-high wonders of Columbia. The anticipation is palpable as we eagerly await the unique adventure BioShock 4 promises to deliver.

Details about the setting and potential return of characters in BioShock 4 are yet to be confirmed as concrete information is scarce. Given the rich history of the BioShock franchise and its notable non-player characters, there’s anticipation among longtime fans for a possible reappearance of these figures in the upcoming game. However, if Cloud Chamber aims to provide an engaging and unique experience for fans, they may want to consider introducing new characters rather than relying on familiar ones.

BioShock 4 Having Returning NPCs Could Defeat the Purpose of a New World

Throughout the BioShock series, it’s uncommon for characters to appear across all its games, with protagonists being a particularly rare occurrence. Only BioShock and BioShock 2 share a few Non-Player Characters (NPCs) as they are both set in Rapture. In other instances, well-known NPCs can be found in downloadable content (DLC), such as Burial at Sea in BioShock Infinite. Therefore, it’s plausible that BioShock 4 might continue this trend, considering Aurora and Borealis seem to exist independently from Rapture and/or Columbia.

Although the specifics are yet to be revealed, it’s plausible that characters from previous BioShock games may appear in BioShock 4 due to time travel and dimensional anomalies. This concept was initially introduced in BioShock Infinite and Burial at Sea DLC, serving as a link between characters like Booker DeWitt, Elizabeth, and the events of Rapture. The possibility exists for recurring Non-Player Characters (NPCs) such as Big Daddies, Little Sisters, and the Lutece twins to intersect with BioShock 4’s protagonist. Moreover, it could be intriguing to see former BioShock characters reappear either in their original forms or alternate versions to aid the lead character of BioShock 4. However, integrating these elements might run the risk of giving the impression that BioShock 4 is overly reliant on its predecessors, potentially impacting the overall experience negatively.

Each game in the BioShock series is self-contained and doesn’t heavily rely on the events of prior titles for progression. Instead, each installment offers distinct worlds, encounters, and character narratives that contribute to the overall universe of BioShock. Introducing recurring Non-Player Characters (NPCs) in BioShock 4 could potentially undermine the freshness of a new setting, particularly one unconnected to Rapture or Columbia. There’s also a risk of compromising the integrity of the franchise by not maintaining its distinctive spirit.

Any BioShock NPC Callbacks Should Be Minimal

It’s understandable that bringing back classic BioShock characters could generate excitement for BioShock 4, given the long gap since the last game was released. However, it’s important to find a balance. For instance, using the Big Daddy character in marketing materials or subtly hinting at NPCs within the Antarctic setting could be effective without making them the main focus of the story.

On the other hand, Cloud Chamber, who took over from Irrational Games, should strive to create new characters and a fresh take on the Plasmid/Vigor mechanic to offer fans a unique experience. Instead of relying too heavily on the legacy of past BioShock games, they have the chance to establish a new universe that goes beyond Rapture and Columbia.

BioShock 4 has an excellent opportunity to revive enthusiasm for the series by crafting compelling storylines and immersive environments. Since Rapture and Columbia have had their moment, it’s now Aurora and Borealis’ turn to attract old fans back and draw in new ones as well.
