Without Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link in play, fans are now just a step away from the debut of Kingdom Hearts 4. Although it’s somewhat reassuring to understand that Square Enix and Disney are diligently working on advancing their iconic crossover series towards its next significant storyline milestone, this also means there might not be any new Kingdom Hearts side-stories to bridge the gap before its launch. Fans have already waited three years since the 2022 announcement of Kingdom Hearts 4, and it appears that there could still be one or two more years to go.
In May 2025, a set of images for the upcoming game KH4 was shared, confirming to the community that the game is indeed in development. Now, all we can do is be patient as we eagerly await its release. With time on our hands, fans have been revisiting previous Kingdom Hearts games, an activity made more convenient than ever before with the Kingdom Hearts All-In-One Package and Integrum Masterpiece collections available across various platforms. However, if you’re looking to pass the time until Kingdom Hearts 4 officially drops, there are numerous other games out there that share similarities with Kingdom Hearts, offering a delightful way to spend your days until then.
Best Games To Play While Waiting For Kingdom Hearts 4
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion
- Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake & Rebirth
- Final Fantasy 16
- Like A Dragon & Infinite Wealth
- NEO: The World Ends With You
- Reynatis
- Tales of Graces f Remastered
- Ys X: Nordics
Square Enix offers a wealth of fantastic games that complement the Kingdom Hearts series, many of which have close ties to its central crossover concept. Games such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake, FF7 Rebirth, Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, and Final Fantasy 16 are all action-RPGs that share creative personnel and gameplay mechanics with several Kingdom Hearts titles, including the main director of Kingdom Hearts, Tetsuya Nomura, in the case of Final Fantasy 7. Although these games have their own unique stories, they’re great recommendations for modern Kingdom Hearts fans seeking a similar gaming experience.
As a fellow gamer, I can’t help but notice that Square Enix hasn’t left its magic touch even with some of the less recognized titles. For instance, NEO: The World Ends With You and its prequel share Tetsuya Nomura as a creative producer and character designer, which gives them a distinct Kingdom Hearts flavor. It’s cool that the original TWEWY characters made an appearance in KH Dream Drop Distance, and the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4 seems to be inspired by the same Shibuya district that TWEWY is set in. Add to that, the combat system in NEO: TWEWY feels more akin to Kingdom Hearts, making it a must-play for fans of the series.
As a die-hard fan of gaming, I’ve got to say that while NEO: The World Ends With You has been made readily accessible to many, there’s still something special about the original The World Ends With You. After all, it’s not every day you find a game with a Nintendo Switch port and an anime adaptation!
When discussing games that share similar gameplay and atmosphere with “Kingdom Hearts”, there are numerous options available. For instance, “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33”, “Yakuza: Like A Dragon” and its sequel “Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth” are contemporary role-playing games that incorporate action elements into their turn-based mechanics, creating an experience that echoes the enjoyment found in “Kingdom Hearts”. On the other hand, “Tales of Graces f Remastered” and “Ys X: Nordics” offer distinct flavors of action RPG, with combat depth that even impresses players accustomed to the challenging “KH3 ReMind” Critical Mode. Lastly, “Reynatis”, although more modest in scale, gains connections to “KH4” through its “NEO: TWEWY” crossover and resemblance to “Final Fantasy Versus 13”.
Instead of meticulously examining all the current games similar to Kingdom Hearts, such as Lies of P, Lost Soul Aside, and Metaphor: ReFantazio, I’d like to highlight one more title that stands out. Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed, a recently launched game, is another worthy contender, even though it primarily functions as a 3D platformer. Its unique take on traditional Disney characters, with a slightly darkened twist, bears resemblance to Kingdom Hearts. Luckily for those eagerly waiting for Kingdom Hearts 4, this game is available across various platforms.
