Summary
- MindsEye faced poor reception due to negative feedback, bugs, and lack of depth in enemy encounters.
- Studio attributes negative reviews to a smear campaign against the game directed to bring them down.
- The co-CEO hinted at a concerted effort to trash the game by undisclosed individuals or companies, while still hoping for a successful release on June 10.
When the director of a popular action game series like Grand Theft Auto is at the helm of a new action game, there’s often a great deal of anticipation. However, for the forthcoming game MindsEye, it appears that the reverse has occurred.
Leslie Benzies, a previous president of Rockstar North, is currently overseeing the development of MindsEye – a studio he now leads. He was instrumental in developing Grand Theft Auto 3 all the way up to GTA V within Rockstar. However, the initial response to MindsEye’s work has been somewhat underwhelming.
MindsEye’s Poor Reception Due To Paid Marketing Efforts Focused On Bringing The Studio Down

Mark Gerhard, a joint CEO with Benzies at the MindsEye studio, proposes that the unfavorable response may be the result of a malicious, paid defamation campaign targeting their studio.

The game previews were unveiled recently, and they haven’t exactly sparked enthusiasm. On Twitter or X platform, one user gathered some negative feedback, which highlighted:
- Reportedly a broken mess, filled with bugs.
- 15 hours long story
- Driving feels “stiff”
- Cut scenes look great and are well animated
- Enemy encounters lacked depth and enemies just “run at the player”
- Combat generally feels fine, very-GTA like
- “Arcadia” is the content creation mode that you can get into by stepping into a portal, only available for PC at launch
- Arcadia can be used to build encounters around the map
- Developers seemed to hint that the main city (Red Rock City) doesn’t have much content and will be a focus post-launch
- Previews think the game should be delayed
Keep in mind that what you see here isn’t a preliminary version of MindsEye, shown ahead of time, because the game is scheduled to launch in just a few weeks, specifically on June 10, 2025.
In the gaming community’s Discord chat, I (Gerhard) stated that the game’s poor reception is due to people being paid to criticize it. When fellow gamers questioned me about the negative response on Discord, I confirmed that it was financed by specific individuals, stating, “Absolutely, 100%.
Gerhard also mentions that “it’s not hard to figure out who” in this context, but he didn’t specify any names or entities. A screenshot from Eurogamer serves as evidence for this discussion.

Gerhard added fuel to the fire by pointing out, “I’ve noticed a deliberate attempt by certain individuals who seem determined not to let Leslie or Build A Rocket Boy thrive. They’re working hard to discredit the game and the studio. It’s clear that there are automated messages and repetitive responses to any content we publish.
In today’s world, it’s not unimaginable for someone to claim that Gerhard is merely paranoid or concealing the truth about a game’s lack of appeal. After all, it’s quite feasible to pay individuals to flood the game with negative reviews and criticism.
I’m hopeful that MindsEye will have minimal impact upon its release date, which is June 10, for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
