Unveiling the Secrets: How Far Can Ochaco Uraraka’s Quirk Really Go?

Summary

  • Ochaco’s Zero Gravity Quirk allows her to remove the effects of gravity from objects she touches, making them float.
  • Ochaco must be cautious with her Quirk due to its limitations and capacity to cause nausea.
  • As seen in Season 7, Ochaco’s Quirk evolves, granting her the ability to manipulate gravity without direct contact and overcome her limitations.

In the thrilling world of “My Hero Academia“, I find Ochaco Uraraka’s Quirk to be one of the most intriguing! Unlike Bakugo’s explosive abilities or Deku’s One For All, it doesn’t always flash with dazzling particle effects. However, when wielded skillfully, it exudes an aura of immense power that is truly mesmerizing. This enigmatic force seems to influence almost everything invisibly. Initially, we observe Uraraka having to think outside the box to maximize her Quirk’s potential. But as I ponder, could there be restrictions in place that might hold back her true capabilities?

Let’s delve deeper into the Zero Gravity ability featured in “My Hero Academia” to grasp Ochaco’s constraints and learn how she transformed these limitations into strengths, making her a valuable hero and a beneficial team member within her hero course.

Ochaco’s Quirk: Zero Gravity

How Does it Work?

Fundamentally, Ochaco’s ability, Zero Gravity, allows her to negate the pull of gravity on objects or individuals she has previously touched with her finger pads. Once an object or person is touched by her five fingers, her power automatically activates, causing it to float upwards. Even though the mass and inertia remain, any acceleration is lost, which was crucial in saving Deku during the hero exam as he rapidly descended towards the ground.

In zero gravity environments, Ochaco must be mindful about handling and touching items, as they might inadvertently float away. Fortunately, she can turn off her ability by clasping her hands, restoring the target to its normal state. She utilizes this deactivation aspect of her power to slam targets back to the ground forcefully. Interestingly, using gravity is one of the most dangerous applications of zero gravity. With martial arts and grappling hooks, Ochaco can easily toss enemies around and instigate confusion on the battlefield by causing objects and debris to fall from above.

In Season 7, Ochaco’s special ability seems to undergo an activation, triggered by her urgent situation. This enables her to lift objects without physically touching them on the battlefield and beyond her previous capabilities. Additionally, during this activation of her ability, she demonstrates remarkable mastery over a person’s weight, even managing to gently lower people she hasn’t physically touched back to the ground at a slow pace.

Though Uraraka didn’t make contact with us, her ability somehow affected us as if it had spread like a chain.” (Kyoka Jiro in Episode 158)

Weaknesses to Balance the Quirk

Zero Gravity Carries Some Drawbacks

Observing closely, it appears that Ochaco’s ability to manipulate gravity seems almost too powerful at first glance. Yet, there are restrictions that she must navigate when employing this power. Utilizing her power often leaves her feeling queasy and even causes vomiting if used excessively. This limitation prevents her from using Zero Gravity for endless flight. However, with rigorous training, Ochaco manages to alleviate some of these feelings, strengthening her inner ear to combat nausea and enhancing her proficiency in using Zero Gravity effectively.

Besides Ochaco’s Quirk having a maximum weight capacity of approximately three tons for simultaneous manipulation, it’s believed. During the climactic battle arc, however, Ochaco managed to surpass this limitation when employing her enhanced Quirk.

In Episode 158, Tiger exclaimed, “I assumed her power didn’t allow for floating more than approximately three metric tons at most. But these youngsters, they’re extraordinary!

In addition, she originally struggled because her ability required physical contact with opponents to function, making her strategy in early battles revolve around finding ways to get close to them. Thankfully, as her power increased, this weakness seems to have vanished. It’s fortunate the storyline concluded when it did, as the reduced scope of her Zero Gravity Quirk might have made many villain encounters too straightforward in My Hero Academia.

Her initial weakness was that she needed to physically touch opponents for her power to function, which necessitated clever strategies in early battles. Luckily, this weakness appears to have disappeared as her power grew stronger. It’s a relief the story ended when it did, as her Zero Gravity Quirk with limited reach could have simplified many villain confrontations in My Hero Academia.

My Hero Academia can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
