As summer arrives, it brings forth the assurance of bright skies, comfortable temperatures, and extended hours of daylight. This is an ideal season to abandon the gaming console and step outdoors for some enjoyable sun-soaked activities with loved ones instead of spending time indoors engrossed in video games.
While nature isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, particularly those who prefer the eerie and suspenseful world of horror games, you might find it challenging to discover an ideal horror game for this time of year. However, there are a handful of them that make for a perfect match with blackout curtains and a chilling beverage.
1. The Quarry
Live The Life Of A Summer Camp Counselor
For many individuals, summer camps represent cherished recollections of spending sun-soaked days in the tranquil countryside, engaging in enjoyable activities and forging friendships. Some may have even taken on the role of counselors once they reached maturity. However, things don’t always go as planned at Hackett’s Quarry; the counselors find themselves with an unexpected extension to their stay when one of them sabotages their vehicle, hoping that an additional night might give him a second chance with his summer crush. This idyllic and enjoyable period turns into a tense and intriguing situation for the camp staff at Hackett’s Quarry.
As twilight falls, my gut churns with dread. Hackett’s Quarry, once a sanctuary, reveals its ominous side under the full moon’s glare. Lycans lurk nearby, even the alpha of this camp is one among them. Now, survival becomes the priority – stay unnoticed as prey or remain human. The prospect of transforming into a werewolf is chilling, a nightmare I wish to avoid at all costs.
2. Hooked On You
Chase The Killers Instead Of Being Chased
In simpler terms, the widely played and highly successful multiplayer horror game, Dead by Daylight, has players either controlling one of four Survivors trying to escape a trial or being the Killer trying to prevent their escape. Although it might seem that romance doesn’t fit into this game, they introduced an alternative called Hooked On You – a horror-themed dating sim set within the same universe.
Instead of continuing with their usual activities of pursuing, frightening, and eliminating, four well-known assassins (Wraith, Trapper, Huntress, and Spirit) are now relaxing on a lush tropical island, as is the player who has set their sights on these intriguing yet captivating killers. The allure of flirting with danger has never been greater, but that’s just part of the thrill! Additionally, players can take in the breathtaking sights of a tropical procession without ever having to leave the coziness of their couch.
3. Dead Island
A Tropical Getaway Gone Horribly Awry
Spending summer at a tropical hotel with friends, partying non-stop, seems like a dream come true. But that dream turns into a nightmare when an emergency broadcast alerts everyone in the hotel about a zombie outbreak. The once lively guests are now transformed into mindless, shambling undead. Instead of recovering from a terrible hangover, they must flee for their lives and find ways to contact help while avoiding the ravenous horde of zombies. Survival becomes their top priority.
Despite the unusual setting of battling undead during summer, the ambiance of the resort is as summery as possible, featuring expanses of sandy beaches, pools at hotels, palm trees, and a clear sky – surprisingly not hindering the immersive and playable experience that is reminiscent of any other well-crafted zombie horror game. Essentially, you’ll need both your weapon and an umbrella for this summer excursion.
4. Until Dawn
For Those Who Miss Winter
If you’re someone who prefers the chill of winter over the heat of summer, perhaps finds the sun too harsh or the insects too terrifying, then you might find solace in the game “Until Dawn“. This chilling adventure takes place a year after the disappearance of Hannah and Beth at the Washington Lodge during winter. But as you step back into the snow-covered lodge, your winter getaway becomes anything but peaceful.
Caught in a chilling ordeal by an enigmatic, seemingly inhuman slayer, this band of comrades becomes tragically divided, each facing their unique terror-filled nightmares. Their only hope lies in enduring till the break of dawn, when promised help will arrive. Brimming with violence, gore, fear, and a generous sprinkling of snow, Until Dawn offers an unforgettable winter horror gaming experience for those seeking to escape the cold reality of the season.
5. R.E.P.O.
Kill Some Time With Friends In The Latest And Maybe Greatest Horror Co-op Game
The summer season offers the most delightful period for students, which we commonly refer to as summer vacations, providing ample leisure time to engage in activities with companions such as games. Games like Marvel Rivals and Fortnite are usually preferred, yet for those desiring a touch of horror, I’d recommend giving R.E.P.O. a try. This game follows a “meet-the-quota” concept, where groups consisting of up to four friends can control an avatar as they venture through spooky locales in search of loot to keep the Taxman satisfied.
It seems straightforward, but there will be fearsome beasts standing between them and their valuable treasure, a destination where they must transport it to for it to matter. Some creatures appear innocuous, such as the duck, while others are simply horrifying and dangerous. Players must remain hidden and silent to avoid these monsters, since if all four characters perish, the game ends.
6. Welcome To Elderfield
Farm Life Is Sometimes More Of A Nightmare Than A Dream
Summer is an ideal season to explore farming simulators since many people fantasize about escaping the city chaos and managing a farm in the countryside at some point. Although games like Stardew Valley are great choices, some gamers may have already invested extensive time into these or prefer something less sugary sweet. Even horror enthusiasts can dream of such experiences!
If you’re seeking a tranquil rural getaway with an eerie twist, don’t miss out on Welcome to Elderfield. This unique blend of RPGs, farming simulators, and horror games promises a chilling experience that transcends mere late mornings and forgotten watering duties.
7. Silent Hill 2
Revisit A Beloved Vacation Destination
The summer season offers an ideal opportunity for spending time with dear ones, as the weather is usually more pleasant, allowing them to savor the attractions of the location they’ve chosen. Sometimes, a particular spot is so exceptional that it becomes a cherished vacation spot. For James and Mary Sunderland, that unique place is the town known as Silent Hill, which holds a special significance for them. A letter from his deceased wife motivates James to revisit this location in search of her.
Initially appearing as a picturesque vacation spot, Silent Hill has transformed into a realm of fog and creatures. Despite this, he remains determined to find her. The truth unfolds at the game’s crucial point. Although it may not be the escape players anticipated, it will undoubtedly be an unforgettable summer adventure.
8. Dredge
Partake In A Popular Summer Pastime
Fishing ranks among the most delightful summer activities, packing some picnic treats, settling by a lake, and tossing out a line, while calmly and serenely waiting to see if anything takes the bait. However, this leisurely pursuit might be too relaxed and tame for gamers seeking something more thrilling and immersive that still embodies the essence of summer. If that’s your preference, Dredge could serve as an ideal substitute for real-life fishing.
The lone sailor aboard a small fishing vessel navigates through the expansive sea, occasionally docking at coastal towns or isolated islands to catch fish. By day, everything appears tranquil, but when night falls, fearsome creatures emerge, adding an element of danger to this seemingly serene fishing endeavor. Strange fish and sea monsters, capable of causing chaos, pose a real and terrifying threat, transforming the game into anything but a peaceful pastime.
