Monster Train 2’s Corruption Seraph Nerf is a Game Changer

In the game Monster Train 2, players will battle against their ultimate foe, Seraph Aeternus, during a regular playthrough. This formidable adversary appears in three distinct forms, one of which is referred to as “The Dominant.” The Dominant’s main focus is inflicting the corruption status upon a player’s units. In Monster Train 2, this status effect causes afflicted units to sustain damage at the end of each turn, with the amount of harm being equivalent to the number of corruption stacks applied. This debuff can be quite harsh.

In simple terms, Corruption can swiftly bring down an ongoing run, especially those heavily dependent on units with low health, and it was considered the toughest Seraph form to overcome when first introduced as The Dominant. Though Corruption remains potent, a recent update has noticeably altered the form, bringing The Dominant’s power more in line with its other two forms, making them all more balanced.

How Monster Train 2’s May 28 Patch Changed Corruption Seraph

On May 28th, an update was rolled out for “Monster Train 2”, which brought numerous improvements and modifications, one of them being a significant change to the character known as Seraph Aeternus – The Dominant. More specifically, this update ensured that corruption Seraph no longer activates his action triggers during Relentless, making the final battle considerably less challenging.

In other words, battles against The Dominant prior to encountering Relentless remain unchanged following the update, making it hard for players who prefer to eliminate Seraph before Relentless starts to notice any differences. However, this approach is quite effective and worth considering.

In simpler terms, when the ultimate attack is used (the “Relentless” state), battles persist until every friendly or hostile unit on a floor has been wiped out. This is different from initial combat where each unit gets one turn before enemies move up to the next floor. Essentially, Relentless ensures that fights reach a definitive end, giving players only three rounds to inflict damage and hopefully defeat the stage’s boss before it can attack the Pyre.

Before the update, Corruption Seraph would carry out his action whenever it was his turn while in Relentless mode. This action added two layers of corruption to every friendly unit on his level, and originally, The Dominant would do this repeatedly at the end of the fight. This repeated accumulation of corruption layers could quickly deplete the health of low-health units, and players who weren’t specifically prepared for such a situation might find themselves limited in effective strategies.

How to Deal With Corruption Seraph in Monster Train 2

Although the recent modification in The Dominant’s combat style has made defeating its form more manageable, players must remain vigilant against corruption. Notably, Seraph continues to apply a debuff to friendly units on his floor each turn prior to Relentless, and he also amplifies corruption stacks on units that he attacks. However, there are various methods to mitigate the harm caused by corruption, and those who use some of the following strategies in Monster Train 2 should be able to advance to Relentless and conquer the revised version of The Dominant:

1. Utilize cards or abilities that cleanse corruption stacks.
2. Employ units with resistance or immunity to corruption.
3. Strategically position your units to minimize their exposure to Seraph’s attacks.
4. Use cards or abilities that can transfer corruption to other units, potentially targeting weaker enemies.

  • There are several unit upgrades in Monster Train 2 that are very useful against corruption Seraph. Titanite, for example, is great on front-line units, as it allows them to withstand the doubling corruption stacks due to The Dominant’s strikes. Endless can also work wonders on a tank, as it allows players to repeatedly deploy the unit after it succumbs to the debuff. Additionally, simply putting health improvements on squishy units can dramatically increase their chances of surviving the corruption applied by the boss’s action.
  • Certain clans in Monster Train 2, like Underlegion and Lazarus League, have units that are inherently strong against corruption. While players will not know that they are fighting The Dominant until after clan selection, those who are lucky enough to be using one of those clans may find the fight to be quite easy.
  • Spells that heal, apply armor, or give units damage shields are good for fighting back against the effect, and players should look for some on their way towards fighting corruption Seraph.
  • Spells that ascend, descend, or daze targets can also be helpful, as they can prevent The Dominant from using its corruption-inflicting action on key floors. This strategy is particularly effective when all the most important units are placed on the same floor.
  • If a player does opt to use that type of placement during Monster Train 2‘s deployment phase, they should put units that they do not care about losing on the other two floors. This will cause corruption Seraph to travel to those floors more often, giving the important units additional turns of reprieve.
