Nightreign” is an action-packed spinoff and prequel, taking place in an alternate timeline within the Elden Ring universe. Unlike the main game, Nightreign focuses on fast-paced, difficult cooperative adventures for you and two other players. Each mission, designed for short, intense play sessions, requires strategic thinking and perfect teamwork as you venture into a world that transforms with the arrival of night. As Nightreign carries roguelike elements, the consequences of death are more severe compared to the original Elden Ring game.
What Happens When You Die in Elden Ring Nightreign
In Elden Ring Nightreign, when your character perishes, all the Rune points you have amassed will be forfeited. To make things harder, each time you die, your character level will drop by one. However, upon respawning, you’ll reappear at the last place of Grace you visited or a secure location nearby, providing an opportunity for you to regroup and recuperate.
During the Sentient Pest raid, your character levels may be taken by pests who have the ability to do so. To reclaim those lost levels, simply track the trail of pests leading back to the Sentient Pest’s lair and defeat it there.
Near Death State
In cooperative play of the game Nightreign, your character doesn’t instantly perish when Health Points (HP) reach zero. Instead, they transition into a “critical condition” or “gravely injured” state. This causes your character to move slowly, and a purple progress bar will show up above them.
Team members can restore you by dealing sufficient damage to your fallen character, as indicated by the large gauge. The more filled the gauge is, the more damage they’ll have to cause in order to resurrect you.
A crucial point to keep in mind is that if you get knocked out during the night phase, your purple meter stays active as long as any two of your teammates are still alive. In contrast, during the day phase, a timer will appear on the edge of the meter. If your teammates can’t revive you before the time runs out, you’ll face the full consequences of death (losing runes and level decrease), and you’ll respawn at the closest safe location or the last Site of Grave you visited.
If each member of your cooperative team is defeated during the game, the session will conclude, displaying the “Defeat” screen, signifying that the current playthrough has ended. In simpler terms, if all three players in your co-op party are defeated, it means game over for this specific play session.
In a single-player scenario of Nightreign, there’s no “near-death” phase. Instead, when your health drops to zero, you’ll instantly be met with the game over screen and face the consequences of death. However, it’s important to note that if you die during the night cycle, your game will end then and there. Conversely, you can perish and revive several times while playing during the daytime.
How To Recover Lost Runes in Elden Ring Nightreign

Mentioned earlier, any Runes you had on you will automatically fall at the precise location where you’ve fallen. A luminous trail called a “Rune Marker” will appear on your map and in the game world to signify this spot. To reclaim your lost Runes, just navigate back to that Rune Marker and interact with it.
In case you perish before collecting your fallen Runes, remember that they’re gone for good. However, upon successfully recovering them, you can regain the level at which you initially dropped them.
From time to time, an adjacent enemy might grab your fallen Runes. When this occurs, those Runes will emit a golden radiance on that particular enemy. To get them back, you’ll have to eliminate the enemy who took them.
