Solo Leveling: Jinwoo’s Shocking Jeju Island Decision!

Summary

  • Jinwoo wants to skip Jeju Island to care for his mother.
  • Due to dire circumstances, Jinwoo ends up on the island anyway and must reveal his powers.

In the second installment of Solo Leveling, it’s revealed that Jinwoo wasn’t included in the roster for the Jeju Island mission, leaving his fellow hunters astonished. This came as a surprise given that they had recently witnessed Jinwoo effortlessly outsmart Goto Ryuji, who was known to have overpowering strength compared to all S-Rank hunters present at the gathering.

Considering the significant danger and potential losses associated with the Jeju Island raid, it’s intriguing that Jinwoo decided to abstain from this mission at first. Given his habit of diving headfirst into any obstacle he encounters in the world of “Solo Leveling,” one might wonder what could have prompted him to exercise such caution.

Hoping to Return to His Old Life

Jinwoo Finally Got What He Wanted

Following his triumph over Baran and the purification of the Demon Castle Tower, Jinwoo found the remedy for his mother’s mana ailment. Just off Jeju Island, she miraculously regained consciousness and returned home, leaving Jinwoo grappling with uncertainty about his future path.

So far, Jinwoo’s main drive had been to shield his loved ones and rescue his mother, and with the resources and skills now at his disposal, he achieved those objectives. Earlier, he was consumed by the ambition of becoming a formidable hunter. However, with no definite aim to pursue, Jinwoo started contemplating a more relaxed lifestyle, cherishing the peace with his family.

In the spirit of my unwavering devotion, I find myself compelled to prioritize: “Mom has emerged from a four-year slumber, her need for me is palpable. Consequently, a trip to Jeju Island will have to wait.” -Sung Jinwoo in Episode 22.

It appears that despite having the option to relax, Jinwoo continues with his daily tasks as mandated by the System. He finds himself somewhat lonely in his new quiet environment. Jinwoo muses over the transformative effects of his past experiences such as growing stronger and battling other hunters, causing him to ponder if he can truly revert to his old life with his family. Even though he’s allowed rest, his mind keeps wandering towards his raid team. While he believes they are powerful enough to win, there seems to be a hint of sadness in him because he is not part of the group going on this particular mission.

โ€œIt should be an easy victory. Even without me.โ€ -Sung Jinwoo

Confronting His Destiny

Jinwoo Decides to Act Anyway

Despite yearning for family time, I find myself compelled to act when hunters on the island face a crisis. With my shadow exchange as my means of travel, I dash onto the battlefield, eager to aid them against the relentless ant attack. I employ healing potions to revitalize numerous allies, yet Cha Hae-In’s condition is too severe for an immediate recovery. This predicament pushes me into a tough spot, as I must juggle demonstrating my abilities further while making sure we escape the island in time to save her life.

After a reappearance by the Ant King, Jinwoo is compelled to display his combat skills anew, with this confrontation being broadcasted worldwide. His journey to Jeju Island effectively bars any chance of retreating into obscurity, as the burdensome duty he bears will prevent him from leading a tranquil life. With new threats looming on the horizon in the realm of Solo Leveling, more battles are likely to come his way.

Jinwoo Should Have Gone In a Support Role

What Could Have Been

Looking back, it’s clear that something was amiss with Jeju Island for the hunters. If Jinwoo had joined the raid from the beginning and employed his abilities discreetly to avoid drawing attention, he could have helped prevent casualties. Unfortunately, Min Byung-Gyu fell at the hands of the Ant King, which may have left the hunters vulnerable to injuries that could have been managed if not for his demise. However, Jinwoo might have missed an opportunity to boost Beru’s future power through his gluttony skill in this scenario.

Jinwoo had a golden chance to overpower the Ant Queen when the beast was roaming openly across the island, avoiding any surveillance cameras. With the Ant Queen out of the picture, the higher-ranked hunters should have been able to breeze through the remainder of the mission and return with minimal injuries. By acting discreetly, Jinwoo could have dodged the heightened scrutiny on him and his kin, making it tougher for him to maintain his solitary style of operation in the future.

Solo Leveling can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Amazon.
