Mindseye Director Explains the Game’s Shorter Than Expected Length

Summary

  • MindsEye‘s 20-hour main story length is intentional to ensure players can finish the game in an era of distractions.
  • Fans comparing MindsEye to Grand Theft Auto not by chance: Director Benzies worked on GTA games.
  • The short marketing campaign for MindsEye is due to start-up costs; post-launch updates are planned.

In the upcoming futuristic action-adventure game titled “MindsEye,” developed by Build A Rocket Boy, the main storyline spans approximately 20 hours. However, its director, Leslie Benzies, doesn’t view this as a disadvantage compared to other games of similar genre. Instead, he intentionally designed MindsEye with a shorter length, confident that players will find it a fulfilling experience.

Supporters who’ve been keeping tabs on the game since MindsEye’s initial trailer unveiled its narrative and mechanics in February have drawn parallels to contemporary Grand Theft Auto titles, and this similarity isn’t accidental. Benzies kick-started his career at DMA Design in 1995, a studio that eventually became RockStar North. He ascended to the role of studio president before departing the company in early 2016. Notably, he has produced ten different Grand Theft Auto games, starting with Grand Theft Auto 3.

In a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, Benzies discussed the duration of the main campaign in MindsEye, stating his aim was to create a game with a story that players could actually complete from start to finish. With an abundance of entertainment options like streaming services and other games vying for attention today, he suggested that maintaining player focus can be challenging. Although players of MindsEye can expect additional side content, the shorter main storyline makes the game more manageable in a time when many gamers rarely reach the endings of their favorite titles. As Benzies put it, “They want the main course and the sides. We’ve tried to pack as much substance as possible into the game, if that makes sense.

MindsEye’s Director Doesn’t Think Its Length is a Problem

MindsEye‘s launch date is quickly approaching on June 10, 2025. During a question-and-answer session, the developer of Build a Rocket Boy acknowledged concerns about the game’s swift release, explaining that as a new company, extensive marketing campaigns for video games can be financially burdensome. However, he emphasized his viewpoint that delaying a game’s launch for several months could lead to fans becoming disinterested and seeking other forms of entertainment.

Apart from Benzies discussing the use of additional content in the interview, fans can also anticipate MindsEye’s post-release strategies. A recent trailer hinted that the game will include creative tools for players to make their own custom in-game items using the game’s resources, which they can then share. Furthermore, it’s expected that Build a Rocket Boy will periodically release new assets, missions, challenges, and more as part of its post-launch updates.
